I bought a GT 6 months ago, I've had 911s, Maseratis and S car audis, last one was a C63 Mercedes. This is by a long way the best car I have driven. I'm 6' 4" and whilst it's snug I can do 500 plus at one sitting comfortably. I've only ever seen one other on the road, it just feels so special. People complement you on your good taste (all the Porsches I owned were vandalised) it's a very special car, plus I live in the Highlands of Scotland, we have THE most amazing roads!!!!!

Really well put together and very good reasoning. I'm driving a A110 Legende since a few months (which is now known as the GT). The 252hp and a bit more outdated infotainment system are the only real differences. Took on business trips, family visit, normal commute with traffic and many "long-way home" trips. When I test drove one I was sold in 15minutes - its not annoying at all to drive on the highway, in the city, etc. and it has the comfort features for it (it even has a rain sensor and heated seats!). Its even really fuel efficient on long trips. Find some curves and the joy starts; don't worry too much about potholes and (speed)bumps, its fun even at legal speeds, you feel the car rotate around you, etc. A sportscar that doesn't scare you but gives you fun instead.

I have an A110. Best car I’ve owned. I’ve also had many 911’s inc 2x GT3RS. I’ve been lucky and had 4 Ferraris and a McLaren. A110 gives a far more enjoyable and attainable drive. Another bonus is that I have yet to be raped by the dealers for a service. Add the Life 110 geometry alterations (a free download and roughly £100 to do at your local garage) and add the larger Life 110 paddles, these minor changes make the car even better. You are welcome to try mine James.

Interesting comment, I've owned a lot of good cars (+20 Porsche) and did five seasons of Carrera cup, currently own a 991.2 GT3 RS, 296 GTB, 600 LT (in BC), 720S and 981 GTS - I thought the Alpine was OK in the twisties not outstanding and let down by a poor engine and gear box. There is literally no comparison to something like a GT3 RS. Its nimble, but so is a Cayman and the Cayman 981 onwards has a far, far better engine (even the turbos are way better e.g 420Nm - 380Nm Vs 340Nm) and gearbox and is a much more liveable real world sports car with far better fit and finish. Personally, I couldn't get my hear around the Alpine price point and why do the R, it simply gets destroyed by real track capable road cars. The bottom line is the Alpine was let down by overemphasis on weight loss rather than being a sum of the parts superstar.

Since I got one (in GT form) last April I couldn’t be happier and this is coming from a current « supercar » owner. I genuinely love this car especially when driving on UK’s small and bumpy roads. Recently drove it all the way to the south of France through Swiss, Germany and Italy. Even at full speed (there is a limiter around 256km/h) it never felt unsafe. It only is quite sensitive to high wind. Very old school in that way. Great little car it is

"It only is quite sensitive to high wind." Real Alpine legacy. Jokes aside, the original A110 was quite frightening on highways because of its lateral wind sensitivity. But it has never supposed to be an highway car.

I love my 110S, just came back from a 3,000 mile Eurotrip in it, absolutely sensational. I tried S and Pure before purchasing, preferred the extra stiffness and the stance and looks of the S. The car is effortless on motorways & Peage, then when we got to the good stuff it was perfect. The attention it gets everywhere you go is just fantastic, particularly as you can imagine in France! People love it and love that it's different. 👍

Replaced my 6 year owned mk3 TT with an A110 about 9 months back , i really didn’t know what to make of it,it took me a couple of weeks and a twisty country road into the mountains to eventually like it , but now I adore the way it drives. I find i take the long way home from work. There were only ever 110 of these imported into Australia, as such they are super rare , seems like only “play station” kids point at it and know what one is :) thanks again for another Great honest review as always - cheers from Brisbane

I drove the A110 GT and it was fabulous. Flattering, even. Very quick at speed. You sit lower in the GT than in the regular one. It has the same suspension set up but the more powerful engine of the S, and 24mm larger brakes F/R, and parking sensors and a reversing cam. I thought the 4 cylinder engine would be too little excitement, but in sport mode it sounded better than I expected. The sound system you mention is incredibly light, which is an achievement in and of itself, and there's an optional additional sub in the GT. The Atelier color range is quite stunning, too. I think it's indicative that both Gordon Murray and James May have selected the A110 as the car to buy out of all the choice available today.

I'm a serial offender with Alpines, this is my fourth and I still have 1300S Berlinette - so I won't give a fully un-biased point of view. That's a well rounded summary - well done (I don't care about the front boot catch - but it is a ball-ache). Mine has done 42000 miles, cheap to service and run. If you step back from the joyful driving on quicker days, the basic day to day - leave it in 'normal' and fully auto and it's so easy to pootle in traffic too and that is truly part of the magic, it is a car you can live with. Performance-wise it's a little belter. Earlier this year I took it to the Castle Combe Magic Day where you can give young drivers runs around (or even let them drive). Even in the company of some Lambos and McLarens - every single person who went in the Alp rated it best car they had been in. One lad (smart enough and old enough to judge) who's dad had just bought a 911 - declared 'I'm telling dad he bought the wrong car - the Porsche can't react as quickly with so little steering movement'

Difficult to get the gear change perfect in this configuration, look at Lotus.... I've had my 110 Pure for a month now, 2k miles in. It's a glorious little thing no matter what speed you're going at. The boot release is a pain, as is the slight rattle coming from the passenger door, but it's just so good to drive you can forgive it's little flaws. Sort of reminds me of why I loved my early Alfa Romeos. I had moved towards the dark side recently, had an RS3 saloon previous, and it's such a blunt instrument in comparison. For where I stay in the Scottish borders (and pretty much any other road) I couldn't be happier with my choice.

have owned my glacier white one for 2,5 years and put 25k kilometers on it. You can have the seat adjusted in hight, as it has three settings, but you need to have this done by the dealer; I do not enjoy fast motorway trips, as it is rather noisy at 200+ speeds (Germany); my wife does not like the little boot space (100 litre front plus 100 litre rear) and the infotainment system is outdated and stupid. It is the cheapest car in running cost I have and have had in many years, maintenance, dutch road tax, fuel consumption, insurance, tyres. On B-roads it has no competition at all! Acceleration 4.5 to 100kph always thrilling and light, responsive, immediate steering and excellent gearbox make it a treasured little pocket rocket.

as a 17 year old who passed his driving test a week ago studying accounting im at a point where i’d be lucky to have a chance at ownership or something like this. economy in a flop or not i’d take the risk because when you see the opportunity disappear in the next decade you’ll be regretful you didn’t jump on it. seeing how many electric cars are on the road now i think companies producing them will eventually enter some economies of scale and someone’s gonna produce an affordable model that everyone will jump on. trust me these classics are going to hold value with what we’re seeing with this rubbish competition

Great video as always! Thank you so much for making them. One thing about the engine: as you know the car should be as light as possible and is designed with the spirit of those old and great rallycars in mind. Light and nimble rallycars also use small engines with turbos so I am not as negative about the size of the engine. Also for public roads it pulls more than enough in my opinion. But yes compared to the whole car if there is anything that could be a bit more exciting it could be the engine probably. All in all an excellent drivers car and I love the turbo inhaling soud it makes…

Loved the review, you picked up on a number of the smaller points, but overall it is great car. I owned my A110 Legende for 3 years and enjoyed driving it wherever i went, even the North circular ! There have been a few issues over that time, i had a software bug that would turn off the engine whilst sitting in traffic, that was fixed by a software upgrade. The rubber surround for the rear window glass came away and had to be replaced. There were some more niggles with the early cars such as the windscreens cracking due to poor fitment, mine was replaced by the dealer before i bought it. Overall a very easy car to own, and yes lots of people want to talk to you at the petrol station !

I have been looking at a solution for the frunk lever as it is annoying in a RHD car.

the lever in the passenger footwell... well, that what you get for still putting the steeringwheel on the wrong side of the car. ;) Would love one of these as a daily. My VW Corrado, Saab 900, Saab 902 convertible, Saab 9000 and Saab 96 all dont have cupholders either. wouldn't mis them. :D

10.000 alpines produced since launch. 15 made every day by 350 workers at the Dieppe factory. Launch of electric and hybrid version next year. Lotus best year production was 1.600. This is not bad for a brand that was relaunched in 2018. If only lotus could make a practical daily driver?

Great review but front bonnet lever problem would be solve if drive on left side 😅 no issues here in Spain. It’s like a front engine usual lever. On the other side, let’s go to engine bay, lets approve uncomfortable tray, in my case I’ve changed for a same shape carbon from Waldow performance. What it really bugs me it’s those three screws in the trunk to loose glass window of course without gas supports. I solved problem with new clip on fasteners. Own a Legende, your right on power, not exciting but enough to handle light weight. Easy and cheap to raise up to 300 hp and close to 400nm, no issues with gear box after almost 4 years. Love my car, had 1.7 old Puma, Alfa 33, MR2 W3, Infiniti G37S, CLK 320, BMW 650 and by far this Infiniti it’s the best car I’ve drove. It’s fun, fast, stylish, rare, daily use, good mpg even running fast, cheap maintenance. In conclusion, the right formula, be light. Don’t understand 2tons car that need +500hp to perform.

Great video, as always! Future classic indeed and probably a very good return on investment. This is also the reason why I'm in the running on buying a new one. Meanwhile premiere editions are available on the second hand market and here in Belgium cost already 3k more than a new model with similar options. Only a PE is from 2018 and so out of manufacturer warranty. Do you think a new model will have the same value as a PE one in the future?

As a Frenchman myself, I know nobody's perfect 😂, I have loved Alpine cars since I was a young boy. I will one day own a Alpine Turbo of the 80s, but since I currently have too many cars it might have to wait a little... This new one is really cool indeed but people are so brand conscious that they prefer to buy a Porsche instead. I did exactly the same, oooolala Monsieur 🤭, mainly because Porsches hold their value, and even when they go down, ultimately they go back up... Alpine is still "new" in the mind of many, so it might have to wait and see how things really develop for the brand...❤ PS: Great review once again by the way, good work 👍

Oh yay, a car I'm actually currently looking at buying. It looks so cute and I really like the fact it's 1.8 Turbo. Sad it's only a DCT, but could possibly look past it. Might just go ahead and give it a test drive. If it's anything like my old MR2, which it sound like it might be, I'm quite likely to like it.

Nice work as usual as you have given a great all-round summary of the A110's point of difference. As I have had mine for over 4 years I would like to make a few points from experience. Yes, the front boot opening is a pain but I have only reached for it less than a dozen times in the 4 years so it's hardly a biggie. I'm also a big fan of the stereo controls as they are far easier for me to use compared to stereo control buttons on a steering wheel. (That's from years of owning a Clio 3 200 RS), Most importantly, i have never owned a car that I could push with as much confidence and playfulness and I have owned 4 previous mid-engined cars + a couple of Lancia Integrale's. I do wish mine had Apple car play but that's about it.

Enjoyed, your film. I bought the "base" model new in July, and agree with your overview..though I can't compare it to Porsches or Lotus..have only had reasonably quick Vauxhalls! Have only done around 1600 miles but enjoyed everyone. I took it round the Trossachs last weekend, twisty and not the smoothest of roads...it just grips and rides so well just as you said 😀 It has faults (minor) as you say, but so glad I have it!

In twisty roads there is no regular Porsche that will leave you in the dust in that car. The real fast Porsches can get away but also they are probably not as fun and certainly the license is in danger then…

Great video! 100% agree with the review. I would also not go for the S. I tried base and S, back to back, on a great road (Alpine knows how to organize test drive events). I didn’t like the ride from the S, and performance wise the difference was really minimal, and mostly at the top end (low and mid range felt identical).

First to congratulate you for such an excellent review. You've gone through almost every subject and talked through the pros and cons very honestly. I've owned an A110 Légénde 252 hp for almost a year till I sold it few days ago as I'll be the very happy owner of the new and exclusive A110R in some weeks' time. Only this tells you a lot about my experience with the Alpine. It's a fantastic fun machine, noble and predictable in its reactions who loves the twisty and moderately bumpy roads. So kudos again to your accurate comments. I just didn't miss much of the lack of power claimed in the review and in fact the difference in performance between the 252 and the 300 hp is significantly smaller than you might think BUT, the S is a better option due to its better chassis setup with special mention to the suspension springs and stability bars that, in the S, are much lighter and stiffer. That makes the car much more stable in the high speed braking and allow the A110 a better traction exiting the turns with an overall feeling of better driving confidence and agility. I also agree about the poor quality of some of the controls: I can survive the climate controls even when are the same of an old Clio but I absolutely hate the volume satellite behind the wheel which disturbs the intuitive and quick handling of the gearbox levers. All these details however are forgivable in my opinion: this is not a family car or a comfy SUV, the car is all about driving experience and feeling and that is close to unbeatable. You always feel safe and in control thanks to the superb chassis and the very well tuned passive suspensions. Thumbs up for Alpine in that respect. Not neglect able either, although it's a personal opinion, the fact that you are not driving a car anyone can see on the roads every day and as you say: you make a lot of friends when you are in a gas station. Porsche Cayman or Alpine? As much as I praise Porsche's quality I've chosen the Alpine over a base Cayman and even over a Cayman S. The A110 is not 200 kg but over 300 kg lighter than the Cayman and, even when less powerful, its lightness delivers a unique driving experience. Again a thumbs up for your accurate comparison: the A110 is in between an Elise and a Cayman and is the choice to go for if you are not into brand-driven purchase neither you want to cope with the spartan life on board of an Elise. All in all the best/most honest review I've watched about this fantastic car.

Happy to be owning an A110 GT as my daily driver. It is such a rewarding car . And I can agree with what you say. Last time I washed it a Mercedes Benz engineer (who pulled up in a beautiful 1st gen E Class Coupé) came up and complimented me on the car of which he had only ever seen two In real life. We started talking and he said: „when I got together with my old colleagues we said that they (Mercedes) should have built a car like this in the past.“ Light, focused, small. He said I should keep it for as long as I can. That’s my plan. Although I can understand that for right hand drive the frunk release is painful. Oh and you cen get longer shift paddles from Life 110 or MP Rezeau.

Pretty solid review! You have pointed out basically all quirks, pros and cons. Some opinion on the S: As an owner of one, I can say that while some magic of the standard is gone (stiffer roll bars noticeably), especially at higher speeds it feels necessary. When driving really quick in Germany, it feels like a good tradeoff between both worlds. Its not really worse or better for me, its just a different flavour. If I were living in or around a smaller town, surely the Standard would be my preferred choice. Looking forward to your opinion on the Radical, If you get your hands on one:).
