Had mine since new , 2002 and still own it to this day , 226k miles all done by me , I honestly believe because I use it everyday all day that’s the secret to its longevity , drive it to Spain every year 3000 mile round trip , never lets me down , yes I look after it 2 services a year 1 big 1 small , and I always fix the little things straight away . I will never sell it as it means to much to me.

My parents had a 2011 4.4 TDV8 for 5 years and I can’t praise it enough, surprisingly nothing went wrong with it over the years. There’s just something about a Range Rover that makes it special, it’s sort of elegant and regal in a way, you feel like your sitting down in the sitting room of an old stately home. It’s fantastic.

When you describe the feel of being in the car as giving a sense of "warmth", you hit the nail on the head. I have an LR4/Discovery 4 (same gen. as the Range) and it is very much the same. It just feels friendly and nice. Visibility is insanely good and it has great utility. It's like a trusty companion. 225,000kms and going strong.

I "needed" a load lugger for camping (glamping) and hauling stuff about, and living in the countryside I felt justified in adding a 2003 petrol V8 L322 to my little car collection in May. I paid rock bottom price for it, at a bit under £2k. Thus far, it has played true to form and had its fair share of faults - £500 on front suspension, and a recent (common) problem with the steering lock meant I had to get familiar with the electrics (although that only cost me a couple of quid in parts and an hour or so of my time). It does a pretty woeful 17mpg or so in daily use. BUT... despite everything, I love it. The capacity, the visibility and the comfort are all top notch. It took me from the midlands to the lakes for a long weekend away with a bootful of stuff in luxury and it's all around lovely. Fits' right in with the mix of farm vehicles and modern luxury on the school run, whilst sitting somewhere in between. A Range Rover is a bit like a big dog; impractical, prone to the occasional massive bill, but utterly loveable.

Same. I bought a 02 for weekend camping trips. Spent about £10k in 2 years but fingers crossed it’s now good for years to come. Absolutely love it. Thinking of getting the centre resonator taken out to hear that M62 V8 burble.

I love my L322 - Got a 4.4TDv8 - This is my second one and so far both have been good to me. The first one I did 40k in and it only ever needed a service and a battery - I have had far far worse cars from all makes. Just keep on top of things and they are simply the best everyday family car in the world - I personally think the last of the L322s are some of the best Rangies too. Classic looks but modern enough to be usable but also DIY able

I'm sure there are more unreliable cars you can buy... but I can't think of any right now. Oh wait, an LR4 Discovery is probably even more unreliable. Friend of mine bought one of those new back in the day, and it wouldn't even drive off the sales yard when he went to pick it up. Six months later after driving a courtesy car for most of that 6 months and a letter from his lawyer and they bought it back at purchase price & he bought a Land Cruiser. Every time he walked past any Land Rover product after that he would curse under his breath.

I live in the suburbs, close to the M25- but mine has been invaluable and a good friend- I tow our horse trailer with it, we regularly go to Cornwall in it, a couple times 5 up with a dog and all our luggage for a week away and food! All swallowed up without the need for any roof box! Even with the introduction of the ulez near me I refused to sell her and got a 645ci for the ulez trips!!! I’ll never be without a Range Rover again!!!!

Hey Jay, Love your videos all the way from NZ. Have recently bought myself an 4.2 L322 Rover and absolutely love it. Same interior and trim as the one in this video. If I had listened to everyone else (about the endless list of issues that these can suffer from) then I probably wouldn't have bought one but I am glad I did as I found a good low mileage example with service history. Super comfy, power levels are good and fuel economy is not too bad unless you spank it! My father owned a Classic and whilst they are the genesis moment I think the 3rd edition of this classic marque is the best. Keep up the good work. Cheers

My friend had an issue with his air suspension on one side of his Westminster 4.4 V8 Tdi. 2 sensors and a calibration by my mechanic pal and it was happy days. I dread to think of what JLR would have charged but it literally was £10 for him in beer and whatever eBay wanted for the sensors. Now if only his former V10 Touareg was that easy to fix 😳

We had an Evoque and new Discovery, we absolutely loved both of them. They had issues as expected however the dealership collected the cars straight away and dropped off a courtesy car before returning ours in no time at all. We were never stranded or left without a vehicle and there was absolutely no quibbling. The service was outstanding throughout ownership. Despite issues, we’d definitely have another.

As a family we've had Range Rovers for decades and there's nothing out there that can replace it. It'll tow our trailers on the roads or the fields, it'll get you in and out in bad weather or it'll take you very comfortably away for a weekend. There's nothing else out there that has that ability in one package. We've had the odd niggle but the one and only time we've not made it home was due to the dealers cock up when it was in for servicing. As with everything, the key is looking after it properly. They were expensive cars when new and can't be run on a Vauxhall Corsa budget despite being able to be bought for Corsa money. If I could only have one car, without a shaddow of a doubt it'd be a Range Rover. 🙂

I hadn't driven one until earlier this year when I had a part time COVID job driving hundreds of cars a month. I'm 59 and have always disregarded these as a useless Chelsea tractor money pit...then I drove my first one which was about 4 years old...and I fell in love. Then I drove a sport 3 litre diesel and it just got worse. I am completely smitten and every time one drives past .. which is often here in the Yorkshire dales my automotive loins ache with longing.... unfortunately it's a love that is going to remain unrequited as I just can't afford one.😥

Thank you for this honest review. I do not work for or have any affiliation with Jaguar Land Rover, but there have been Range Rovers in my family for longer than I have been alive and we have NEVER had a lemon and not one of them have ever left anyone stranded on the side of the road. We still have the second one in the family waiting restoration when funds allow. It is from 1982 and passed its last MOT first go despite being laid up for years. That is a 40 year old car still on its original engine! How is that for green credentials. This unreliability wrap Land Rover gets when other makes get away with it never ceases to amaze me! More often than not all these stories of total woe come from people who have never owned one. Of course there are exceptions as with all makes. At least we can rely on you to provide a balanced review James, and for that, from someone who does not like bias, Thank You!

No one denys that older land rovers weren't reliable as they were simple touph machines. It's only the newer ones with the complex electronics and sloppy quality control that you'd see more reliability issues.

Mine was one of the cheapest on auto trader, 4.4tdv8, 163k on the clock, 2 owners, owned for a year and didn't put one foot out of place, travelling up and down the country many times, pulling trailers and even a few days greenlaning, absolutely stunning vehicle

I've got a 4.2 SC in the states. Just crossed 207,000 miles yesterday and it runs great. I love it to death, nothing can replicate it.

@@Spartansrule118 We're now up to 217,000 without any major trouble. The suspension is shot and really needs new arms and bushings etc. but still not major issues. The 07-09 models are the ones to get. The 06 had the better engines but the older dash. They can be good too but as it was a transition year the spec can be kind of a hodgepodge between the first models and the 07-09s. The last models had the digital dash etc. but were more complicated and the engines had timing chain problems. Definitely look for an 07-09 if you want the best L322s.

I honestly don't get it I really do not I have owned R/R's since I was 21 years old. First being a 1971 2 door which I still own I currentlydrive an 04 L322 and have owned this one for 5 years and nothing nasty to report on any of them The worst issue I have had is the ignition key switch failing so I had it by passed to a button Oh and the central locking not working off the key fob and thats it I do look after my cars re service etc but nothing special really So I must be a very very lucky chappy ??

I am perfectly happy with my 4.2 SC. It is less expensive to maintain than a Cayenne of the same era (if you do it mostly yourself of course). I have owned all the generations in top of the range configurations and still own my old 4.2 LSE Classic. All this to say that you can't argue with a Range Rover person... Owned an LR4, wife totaled it, bought an L322. Nice ride but I found it incredibly unreliable. Replaced driver front air strut, wiper motor (been driving cars for 30 years-never had one die on me before) then the climate control panel started failing and I had an intermittent speed restriction warning that would pop up then go away. More parts failed just can’t remember which ones and probably too long to list. Sold it and went back to the LR4 which I find more reliable and the parts aren’t as expensive as a L322.

Excellent and informative review , we use a tdv8 vouge and it has traveled 145k with us usually with a 3.5 ton trailer and digger attached . It’s moved artics in the snow . Rescued an old couple in floods of 2017 and been the best car we have ever had in the company . In 6 years it’s had a pair of turbos a gear box service and regular service besides which it’s been trouble free motoring . Drop links and suspension arms take a pounding as do breaks but beyond which it has never ever ever broken down ! Proof if you look after something it will look after you

I'd argue your point on the Evoque, it's a great and very capable small off roader. Not everyone lives in central London, and not everyone needs a huge car to drive around in. I'm looking at an L322 because I want the space to throw bikes, climbing kit, skis, camping kit and kayaks in/on and still have a bit of space to move. I want the off road capability because when there are red snow warnings that's when I head out to have fun in the mountains (oh, and I live in the city so will no doubt be judged heavily by most). Conversely my dad doesn't need any of that space, but does want a nice car that's well spec'd and comfortable, but also wants similar ability to deal with nasty conditions, reasonably rough Land Rover tracks to get the dog out, and also deal with the absolutely destroyed roads in the north of Scotland in winter before they repair them for the tourists in the summer. The Evoque for him and where he lives is perfect, apart from the aforementioned JLR reliability! People love to diss it because it's 'not a proper RR' or that most of them they see are in towns (erm, where are most FFRR's parked?), but the reality is that it ticks a very niche box that for some people is absolutely perfect. What else from the other stables is as competent on dirt/snow and still relatively compact? Audi/BMW/Merc etc? You're having a laugh. The Rav4 is more reliable but not capable of actual off roading really, and neither is the Lexus equivalent. I had it up the Bealach na Ba a few winters ago in 4" snow with ice underneath and it was absolutely perfect. Sure footed, capable and good going both up and down. No stress or drama, and that's on a road many tourists have palpitations on even in summer.

We've got an L322 in the family, it's a 2011 car and it was bought from a dealer, it was in great condition and over 2 years and roughly 24k miles it's been superb. Only had a couple of minor mechanical issues, excellent cars IMO, providing you're under no illusions as to the running and servicing costs. Buy the right one with the right work done (gearbox and diff services especially) and I think they're great cars.

@@Spartansrule118 Just a pair of lower arms at the front and a coolant pipe that split (top of engine, so dead easy to swap). Get the trans and diff fluids changed though, some peace of mind at the very least. Also, I highly recommend Michelin pilot sport 4 SUV tyres, drives so much nicer with those on compared to Pirelli scorpion's which I didn't think were that bad. Ours only goes off road a couple of times a year so a good tradeoff if it's 99% a road car.

British car manufacturers are always capable of making ultra heavy sedans/SUVs feel nice when cornering with some speed, and that's why I started to like them very much these days! Plus, as I understand more about cars, the more I like Range Rovers, not just because I had several chances to ride in one of these when I was 8~10(about 2009-2011) and Jeremy Clarkson has owned one for years, and because making an SUV that perfectly combines ride comfort, off road capability and stability is not an easy job, that's kind of incredible if you think about it

Damn you Jason.. that's another car I've just put a deposit on as a result of this channel. This will be my fourth. the first being a 1970 classic back in 1985. Followed on by two more P38's, both of which were horrendous money pits. One with a porous block, the other needed a compressor and two suspension air ride bags replacing. I can understand the Evoque seeming a bit pointless in the UK however in foreign markets like Kenya where occasional off roading can sometimes be a lot less occasional it is a great choice for those looking for a light off-roader that is not the size of a bus. It may not look like it, but I challenge you to explore the off-road capability of that machine....I was very surprised and believe me you will be too.

I have had my 2004 4.4 v8 petrol l322 for a year now. It is definitely a love hate affair. Its cost me 4 k to buy and another £1500 on repairs or servicing. You are never without a warning light but for the money nothing comes close to comfort, room , versatile and onwards. Couldn't live without one now. I only use mine for family holidays and weekends.Amazing vehicles

I was sat on a tail gate as a young man on one of the gen 2 cars. The brakes gave out and i started rolling down a snowy road with one ski boot on. Was rescued by my mother before the car crashed into a snow bank. The car threw its fan a year later destroying the engine bay area. It was fixed and sold on. The family many thousands of pounds poorer.

The 4.2 SC is considered the most reliable engine and box combo and they really do suit the car so not to be overlooked when considering one of these. Economy is obviously not top of your list when buying a range rover so buy the best example you can and if you only do low mileage then the petrol engines are the way to go and avoid costly forced regens.

My 322 came with a folder of repair receipts I could've papered the garage with. Most were between one and two grand. I paid about £4k for it. Quickly learned that they demand a tip-top condition battery or all sorts of spurious errors are thrown. That aside it was great. Big family trips were a breeze. It was such a pleasure to drive. Then paranoia got the better of me (Lion V6 reputation for crank failure) and I let it go. Really want another now. My Freelander really isn't scratching that itch.

All the tailgates rust, the sills rust at the rear terribly if you pull the sill covers off to have a look. My 59 plate had both these issues, and then the gearbox started slipping when cold so I gave up and sold it on. Had it a year and felt lucky to get out fairly unscathed.

Hi owning 2 Range Rovers A p38 and a L322 both v8 s The p38 i have had for 12 years its a 1996 car the 4.6 HSE No serious problems with the car gets used for towing p[ant trailers daily . The 322 I have had for 2 years its 03 and 4.4v8 vogue that is my car again no problems to report. I find them good value for money.

I've got a late L322. It's brilliant. Done 135k miles in mine now, 100k of them with me. Only had minor issues. Just buy a good one and maintain it with a good specialist. Avoid the main dealers.

I have an Overfinch L322 3.6. 320hp 600ftlbs, its an amazing car,I love it. I also had a TD6 before which I loved, although it was not very quick. And before that I had a P38 4.0 V8 with a Turner engine which was proper quick and very reliable and a cracking car. I love Range Rovers. Just keep them well serviced including the Transmission.

Had two of the latest L322 RRs 4.4diesels bought used with about 60k on the clock apart from the same expensive oil leak problems have been luxurious reliable great mileage munchers driving to spain each year at over 30 mpg and arriving fresh with no overnight stops great vehicles find a good independent LR specialist and avoid dealer servicing and they will ladt a life time

I just bought a 05 HSE with the BMW 4 or 4.4 litre, 5 hp19 trans, Canadian model, same as l322 I think, it has 240k kms and very little surface rust and the electrical wiring untouched, it runs fabulous but won't move in any gear. Torque converter maybe, I'm not complaining though I bought it for a staggering 400$

Fair review. I have a TD V8 with 130K on the clock and it is a fantastic vehicle. The bit you missed, though, is that it simply the best thing ever for towing boats, trailers or horseboxes.

Well done James, yet another well presented, well informed and well balanced video. You certainly are the master of your craft. (although you really should of squeezed a sentence in on its towing capability...). I'm approaching 1 year of ownership of a 2012 TDV8 Autobiography. It has a genuine 54k miles and had the option boxes ticked by an original owner with more money than sense. Ignoring a major "DPF Full" limp mode issue just after a self proclaimed Land Rover Specialist in Essex had their fumbling hands on it (they "forgot" to re-attach an induction pipe...), this car has been 100% reliable. Middle of France and back with family and a 2 tonne 2.5m (8.0') wide caravan in tow was a 950 mile relaxed, stress free pleasure. Yes, you do have to ensure the maintenance is kept up by someone who really knows what they are doing, and yes, you are well advised to keep short journeys to a minimum and keep the car for the longer runs. But wow, this car just keeps on impressing even though i've owned more modern top spec alternative cars in recent years. Then factor that you can now fix the one thing that dates this car - the infotainment system, by adding Apple CarPlay without loosing any of the original features, this car is now just a delight to live with - despite the highish running costs.

I have one (2004 HSE with the BMW M62 V8 motor). It's great as a second vehicle for hauling- but not something you should rely on as a primary vehicle. Prices on the air struts used to be super expensive but now there are a bunch of inexpensive aftermarket ones (~$180/each). The ZF transmissions are weak but if you baby them (eg. roll out from a stop before accelerating) they can last.

Had a 2002 L322 td6 from new ... did 300k miles. The BMW engine never gave any problems , only got rid as the gearbox stopped working. Tyres did 50k miles each time . Fun Fact ..Timing chain issues are because the driver bought the wrong car... get a porsche if you like driving hard ! It is a smooth cruiser. And yes I had a Range Rover before and yes I have bought another .... But an old one with the BMW engine !!

I got so close to buying one of these but the cost to keep one on the road was a bit too high unfortunately. This design along with the disco 3 have aged really well i think.

I live in an urban area and need to worry about the congestion charge. Unfortunately that means I'm now looking at supercharged range rovers. My car is the family holiday wagon, so needs to get my family and me to our destinations safely. Sometimes we camp so a large boot is much desired. These sorts of videos do make me think about a supercharged RR for family holidays. yes it s a BS argument but the sound and the enjoyment of driving a RR every day almost make it worth while! Currently I'm running a petrol XJ and I love it. A supercharged XJ or a Range Rover is all that would tempt me really. Eventually I'll cave and buy the green, sustainable choice (whatever that is) but until then I'm enjoying my V8's as I fear they're doomed.

Those Pirelli Scorpion Zero's are actually the standard fitment road tyre, along with the Goodyear Wrangler HP. The optional off-road fitment was the Goodyear Wrangler MT/R, later on the (slightly more road biased) Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac. One thing I will say, at least the L322 only came with the TDV8. The L405 came with the option of the closely related TDV6 also used in the Discovery 3 and 4, and they are known for a chocolate crankshaft. I mean, just Google it!

We've had a 2008 in the family since new and they definitely live up to their reputations both on the positive and negative side. I had a good run with it in my care for a long while with no major issues aside from brakes and coil packs, but now the A/C compressor has gone as well as something up with the engine misfiring. We had kept it because it drove far too well for the pittance we were offered for it years ago. We have the 2006-2009 era 4.2 supercharged Jag V8 which is said to be the most robust of all of these, so I'd hate to see what others have gone through. I've taken it off road multiple times and even got compliments on the car when fitted with the 19 inch LR4 wheels with mud terrain tires on it. Wonderful car if you can stand the potential headache. The only place it truly shows its age is with connectivity. Would love CarPlay in the old girl.

The Range Rover is pretty much the only SUV, together with the Land Cruiser, that actually appeals me. At the same time, I think I never found myself able to justify the purchase of one, I think you have to use the off-road capabilities of this thing to say "ok, that's the car I need", and realistically, most of the time I would find myself doing just fine with an old Volvo XC70, probably the kind of car I'm gonna buy soon for my future trips.

Had a L322 tdv8 and a L320 Tdv8 (RRS). Sold them both last year, and I miss them so hard. Been peeking on perhaps buying a newer RR (+2015) as they seem dropping in price fast now

The naturally aspirated 4.4L V8 went in the North American Discovery3/LR3 and is a lovely and reliable power plant.

Fantastic. My P38 is a total pain in the arse, and I've had to almost completely rebuild it, but I still love it. Looking at current prices, i could be tempted to add an L322 to the fleet. I have the Range Rover virus for sure ❤️
