They are truly fabulous cars! I'm a cabbie and I've had plenty of them. They are reliable like nothing else - as cabs we run these 24/7, they get an oil change every 10k, and they just keep going. Rear end and transmission are the only weak points, they'll probably need a rebuild after 250 thousand miles or so. The engine will last half a million easy. Sadly, they tend to get wrecked before they get worn out. We had one that ran over 700k all original

As a crown Victoria owner, I can say this is 100% true. You still get some people that don’t care, but for the most part it does cause people to actually drive better. Of course that’s becoming less and less true as time goes on, since they refuse to make the Vic’s and the explorers took over. But depending on where you live there’s still a large number of Vic’s still in service

Owner of this car is a man after my own heart. I went to NYC for my honeymoon in 2016. NY taxis were quickly being replaced by some hybrid Toyota thing and I had a bucket list for New York that, along with many things, had on it that I must get a ride in a Crown Bic NY Yellow Cab. It got to the last day and we hadn’t had the need for a cab but now we needed to get to JFK. So I made my wife wait on the sidewalk for a long, long time, until an available Crown Vic came along and I hailed it down. The taxi driver could not understand why, at all, I was so excited to be in the back of his car 😂

I also went to New York in 2016 as I turned 21 that year. I had the same idea about wanting to travel in a Crown Vic cab, sadly I had to settle for a Toyota Camry hybrid, but the driver had previously ran 2 Crown Vic's and spoke very highly of them!

As a Brit living in Canada I was looking for a super reliable car that was a bit more exciting than a Camry. I needed up buying a Lincoln Town Car Cartier L (long wheelbase) the one I found had only 80k km on the clock despite being 18yrs old. The fun reason for that was that the vehicle I bought had been donated to the RCMP in order to transport QE2 on her visit to Vancouver. After that it spent about a decade in the dealership as a show piece. I bought the car mostly because I like a luxury car and I like reliability and low cost of maintenance (tough ask) I actually bought it as an experience as I thought it would be hilarious to float around in a land barge. But I quickly fell in love with the vehicle. It was so relaxing to drive I found myself enjoying driving slower and was in no rush to arrive on time. It was one of those cars that I would stay sat in after arriving home to finish my radio show or podcast. Fantastic car.

It has the slightly more powerful DOHC 4.6 thats actually more prone to reliability issues than the SOHC, an interior that is basically that of an optioned out Grand Marquis but more sleek, white faced gauge cluster and it came with a leather jacket. It was a neat idea, but it was executed poorly imo.

So when the mustached Sheriff noticed that I really interested in the car he performed the full show: siren and lights on, kickdown and go. We had an amazing ride through the city at night at ridicolous speeds and then a lot of fun with doing some rather harmless police work the rest of the shift. Nice memories with the Crown Vic as a really cool cop car!

It's like electro-shock "therapy" once you've seen these in your rear-view mirror one too many times :D I actually remember driving with some friends, back to my home state from Washington DC along the George Washington Pkwy ... and there was a Virginia State Police Crown Vic doing 55mph in the right lane with a column of cars following him. In my state, it's not unusual to pass a police car while doing 60 in a 55 ... _they let it go due to variations in speedometers, oversized tires and what-not_ - BUT NOT IN VIRGINIA :D ... he pulled us over as soon as we merged into the right lane. Since we were from out of state, he gave us a warning and let us go - he was a bit stumped how anybody would dare pass his police car like "dooop-deee-doooo".

Fun fact, late model Crown Victoria and pretty much the entire line of panther cars have mostly interchageable frames. Thank you for editing out the annoying tire squeal while going around corners. They all make this noise on TV. Also good to see it has the alignment done so it is not sliding about corners when giving it the beans. Many of these cars were assembled just down the road from me near the town of Talbotville, Ontario. They were often used for taxi cabs as they were sold after a certain number of miles or hours of operation. There was a time that Mustangs were used as Highway patrol cars in the 80's and 90's.

They have been replaced by the Dodge charger as pursuit vehicles, much faster but also going to be discontinued. The best deal on these is you can find one is an unmarked unit. Many times has much less idle hours and not abused as much. Also might have the center console instead of the computer mounts.

I drove the Mercury equivalent - Gran Marquis if I remember correctly - as a hire car about 12 years ago. My initial excitement about getting into a proper American V8 sedan was soon crushed by disappointment. Large on the outside, cramped on the inside. Odd combination of plush leather and scratchy plastic. Slow, unresponsive - I remember gunning it on the highway as we hit an uphill section - a lethargic kickdown was followed with more engine noise and not a lot more progress. It floated rather than rode down the highway (which did make for a comfortable ride as a passenger, to be fair) and rural roads were definitely not its thing. To be honest, the steering, ride and handling just reminded me of an old worn out car. Think you nailed it James, when you said you couldn't think of a car that couldn't escape it on British roads! Absolutely no doubt they are cheap to build, super simple, robust and capable of massive miles though. Just what is needed for a government fleet vehicle 😄

You will get tens of thousands of great miles out of your Crown Victoria. They are so popular because they are “old school” design, not overly laden with fancy technology so very easy to work on and built so well they rarely break down. Top speed of your car is 130-132 miles per hour. The ballistic panels were an additional $3,000 option that could be ordered with the car. The panels can stop all small arms fire, including shotgun slugs and rifle rounds. Fairfax does get a fair amount of snow but any rust is usually just on the surface and doesn’t hurt it structurally. Enjoy your cruiser, there are many, many of these out there hitting 500,000 to 800,000 miles on the road!

I'm a UK fan of the Crown Vic too - I've made it my goal to source, buy and import one of my own to the UK, hopefully in the next few years! So many of these were built that they're fortunately still very common, and this will remain the case for at least a little while yet. I'd like to do the importing part myself, as while it'd be cool to buy straight from the UK used market, ones that get sold tend to not last very long before someone snaps them up, and also tend to be a bit on the pricey side because of their rarity (making it a bit more cost-effective to find and get a 'new one' across the Atlantic) which is rather funny considering how in the USA, these are pretty much everywhere!

I drove a base civilian '03 Crown Vic for 11 years, after replacing the marshmallow springs and shocks with police versions, and putting some all season high performance tires on it it was a great driving car (for a body on frame boat). The rack and pinion steering and new front suspension for '03 makes a huge difference in the way it drives compared to the earlier cars. Even used it to tow a bit, which it did just fine. I miss it a little bit, it was a stellar road trip car.

Quick American police car anecdote (not a Ford). 30 years ago in the Denver, Colorado US, my friend who is still in the car business was tasked to deliver a police version of a 80's Dodge Diplomat from an auction to one of his customers (many Diplomats were still in service at the time). I drove the Diplomat, while he drove his BMW 325e. Without a word, naturally we decided to have some fun on I-25 ... and fell into a mock police chase with me chasing the Bimmer. People moved out of our way pretty quick (even though the lights and sirens were disabled - they figured "someone" was in trouble). The Police Diplomats had a 2.24:1 rear-end, so they were geared for higher speed (not really) and better economy. It wasn't a very quick car off the line, but with the improved police suspension and brakes - it was a much more solid car to drive at higher speeds than I expected - and kept up with the 325e (even though it took twice the engine displacement to do so - but it was also carbureted... and only had a 7.3:1 compression ratio for emissions). For once, it was fun to see the road from a LEO's perspective instead of being a "perp" ha ha. My buddy said it felt weird that there weren't going to be any bad consequences to this "chase".

It was Like New with just 120,000 miles when I got hit. I miss that car, it had 327 gearing and was great for long hall drives at over 100mph. Fastest I ever had it was 145mph!

I went on a 6 month holiday in California and instead of renting (You cannot function without a car in South West US) I bought one of these on Craigslist for 1800 bucks. 124000 miles and new cop tyres on it. Black and white with decals etc. hastily removed. It had a rubberised floor, hammock seats (for police belts to fit in the chair) and felt like a commercial vehicle to drive and park around town. It came into its own at highway speeds. I slowed 5 lane highways in LA to 65mph (they typically go 80-99 when there's no traffic). I put surfboards on the roof, and of course I blasted the "Cops" theme tune from it frequently. Aviators are important if you drive one of these. I still have the registration book

I got to drive dozens of Panther platform Fords, Mercurys and Lincolns as rentals back in the day. Thanks to Hertz unlimited mileage rentals, some years I put more miles on them than I did my own cars. They were great for transporting clients and co-workers to and from airports, hotels and meetings. Some days I was basically an overpaid taxi driver! They were very functional vehicles as the trunk had room for four suitcases and four briefcases/backpacks. When I was alone, I did my best "TV cop" rapid right turn exits from driveways. Always got a good squeal from the inside rear tire and massive body bounce and roll from the stock (non-police) suspension. Very entertaining!

After a traffic accident in my Honda Civic because the other driver did not see me, I bought one of these. Best insurance money can buy. Everybody here in the states are conditioned to do a double take if they get so much as a inkling of the sight of one of these. They are not built for speed. We have radios and helicopters. They were built for endurance.

These were the police cruisers were the police cars of my childhood. These were so tough that the LAPD tried to keep them from being replaced. If they got in a wreck, they just got the frame straightener and sent it back out. These also give me a bit of personal nostalgia because both of my parent's at one point owned the Mercury version.

I had a 2005 Lincoln Town Car and it was a very reliable car and parts were pretty cheap too and everything was to easy to work with, with plenty of room. In Finland people didn´t really know what it was, is it a Cadillac? Is it a Chrysler? No! It´s a Lincoln! Comfortable cruiser with enough power but if you have five adults onboard and luggage in the trunk the 4.6 is a bit sluggish. Overall probably the best car I have owned!
