In my life I've always known Maserati existed, that they made some seriously cool cars, but also that they weren't cars many people were really brave enough to own. They drink like fish, depreciate like crazy and break all the time.
Having now owned one, I figured it would be a good time to look back on my ownership experience and ask how the car met the "expectations" of exotic Italian cars.

@@ApKieras I think it sounds better than the LFA. Much more melodic, the LFA is too waily, sounds like an F1 car which I guess some people love and it does sound great on a trackday but having an engine screaming in a high pitch when you're popping to the shops or cruising on the motorway would really get on my nerves after a while. @@jamesrobert4106 Like the LFA, It suits the car. In a Maserati Quattroporte (or a Porsche Panamera for example) it would be completely out of place. Like Jay pointed out, lap times are pointless in a car like this, and so is making them sound like race cars. There is a reason why Maserati ditched the flat plane crank when they borrowed this engine from Ferrari.

I bought a 2007 Auto 4.2 in 2011 for £28k with 40k on the clock. I’ve still got it now at 90k and loved every minute. Servicing is reasonable, cheap even with an excellent local dependent. And contrary to some other comments here I’ve had NO corrosion, other than a small amount of bubbling just at the underside of the door mirrors. The auto box is super reliable as is the engine. Spare parts ARE expensive - front discs and pads will cost you £1500. And on a 1000 round trip to and from Goodwood - Edinburgh I averaged just under 30mpg. If you’re tempted pile in. Great car.

Hi JayEmm, loving your content! I bought a QP new in 2008. It was the 4.2l with a ZF box. I loved it for 10 years until the bills got too much , then for 3 years I started to get angry at the thing. The last 3 years cost me £15,000 in servicing and fixing faults. One fault was the alarm that turned itself on automatically after 30 seconds but didn't actually lock the doors. Foskers , then McGrath Maserati both failed to find the fault. I wish I had known about Sports Italia as both Foskers and McGrath had my eyes out for any work they did. I did roughly 42,000 miles in my 13 years. I took it to Le Mans and even to the Nurburgring (a very pleasing 9 minutes 10 secs lap, I did used to race a 1963 Ford Galaxie so the Maser handled like a dream compared to that) Michelin tyres are far superior to the Pirelli's in my opinion, I wish I had changed brands a lot earlier. The heated seats I had in the front were superb. The demisting as you say is a joke. My battery would go dead after only 2/3 days which was very frustrating until I bought a trickle charger for it. Keep up the good work.

@@markplumtree1605 bought a car for a bargain many years ago... the battery would be flat in 4-5 days, and all it was, was the bonnet/hood rubber grommet missing. There was a transmission leak from the solid pressure end pipe to a brittle rubber section also, but long story short, I grab bargains like this yearly... best problems I've solved are old transmission oil when viscosity lowers and the cars go into limp mode... The QP5 I bought was a Singapore import, and no one wanted it, for fear of dreaded gremlins... apart from sticky buttons, it's a brilliant example with 34,000ks on the clock.

@@peterlattimore6013 I wouldn’t call it a bargain as I bought it brand new. To have so much rust underneath at the front and very leaky rear wheel arches at the back was very disappointing. As I said I loved it for ten years before the faults and bills mounted up. I drove it around town mostly so only averaged about 15mpg and that was driving it gently. It was once picked up by a driver from Joe Macari and he managed to race it back to their factory and achieve 7mpg. U.K. car tax is also nearly £600.00 which isn’t ideal. One of the other reasons I sold it was because of all the speed humps in my area, very tedious!
@visionist7

@@markplumtree1605 that's not bad tax compared to its native Italy. Any car above 250bhp pays a "Supertax" on top of normal tax for every KW above that power. For a new QP the total tax would be about 3500 Euros a year. The Supertax is gradually reduced as the car reaches 5, 10, 20 years old etc, but it's still managed to basically destroy the performance car market in Italy. Whoever came up with it should be bayoneted.

Having inherited my late Dad's Quattroporte, back in 2010, needless to confirm the issues you have experienced are ALL justified. I do not play GOLF so the Boot was just fine, the Ferrari inspired 4.7ltr power train was a joy to enjoy, (but at 12/15mpg a living nightmare)....did I experience any problems, NOT ONE...not one problem for the 3 years I had the pleasure of owning and enjoying this outstanding Vehicle. Fully agree with your observations on the Heating/Air conditioning...this issue alone was NEVER resolved. Sadly the "MAS" had to go, but if time and providence allow perhaps before I reach my "dotage" another would be seriously considered. Loved the fact that I could drive this onto my local Supermarket carpark, (with 2 very large Willow Trees, full of Nesting ROOKS), Rev the Engine and dissappear before the Parked Cars were covered in Rook C**p....joyous times...G.A.R.

A very fair and accurate review - the seats offer no support whatsoever, and I suspect you didn't have the TPMS option checked which is a good thing... they're a nuisance. But all those things rapidly melt away when you hear that soundtrack in sport mode... it's magnificent and the harder you push it, the better it sounds. BTW - Michelin Pilot Sport 4S is the best rubber for these, widely accepted that P-Zeros on this car don't perform well in the UK.

Pitty about the seats since these are trimmed in alcantara so they are the grippiest setup they made, my only suggestion would be for you to start wearing corderoy pants and jackets to increase the friction coefficient, but that would compromise your trademark look and we don't want that...

Weirdly it was incredible in the snow we had a few years back - ice mode on the gearbox was very gentle and the tyres I had seemed to give me plenty of grip - certainly much more than an E class I saw slapping off the curb on the hill I was driving down. We had the boot issue - in the long term you probably need a new release motor but if you get stuck this video may save your life kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWOnpmSrrsh4fqc (no I definitely didn’t accidentally lock my only working key on the boot when our remote release stopped working…) Unfortunately the variators caught up with it in the end and it had to turn in to a 535d but miss it every time!

Bought it as a first owner car from a dealership in Italy, where it had been sitting in a warehouse for 12 years. 43.000 Kms on the clock at the time, it still looked and smelled new! I specifically went for the most basic Maserati there is: no electronic injection, no electronic ride adjustment, no intercoolers, no ABS, no power steering, a single exhaust and quite regular size tyres. It did have airconditioning, which was basically all I needed. It was dead cheap when I bought it, invested the same amount again to get it on the road and drove about 10.000 kms over 8 years without any problems worth mentioning. I remember vividly how it was about the most trustworthy and reliable car during a track event with the Maserati club. :D

Apart from the main power cable to the alternator chafing on the head casting on a 4200 GT and nearly setting the car on fire after stranding me, they never failed to get me from A to B. Servicing isn't ruinous but if any part is required that is unique to Maserati it costs a bloody fortune and takes about 2 weeks to arrive.

What do we know about Maserati... well, the inspiration for the Maserati trident, is from a fountain in Bologna... a GranTurismo is expensive to fill up (about £125 from yellow light to full)... gets approx. 20mpg if driven by a saint, but expect to mostly see about 16mpg in every day use... it's loud, and getting in and starting the engine never gets boring... people stop you to talk about it (whether that's at the petrol station, in traffic, doing the school run)... the noise is addictive... and shifting from manual to auto (particularly when in 'sport' mode) is a lot of fun and the car mostly then sounds like God shouting....

The surprise here is how much like the Disco Volante that Clarkson drove (with the same engine) the Maserati sounds. All that's missing are the occasional burble with pops from the exhaust. I believe the Alfas are million dollar cars.

I've been very seriously investigating one of these in the US as a replacement for my XJ8. I like big sedans (A8l 4.2l in my past also) and this seems like it would be the ticket. I think they sold much better in the US, but depreciated just as horribly.

You're talking absolute b@lls about the 4.2 engine. It loves to rev. Is a joy to listen to and is uber reliable. I've owned a 4.2 Granturismo for five years and it's the most reliable and most enjoyable car I've owned, in 35 years of driving. I rarely drive like my hairs on fire and we don't have autobahns, so how often have I missed the extra 40hp of the 4.7? Never. Not once. Zip. Zilch.

You’ll regret selling it James. The best looking and sounding sports saloon ever. I think the guilia QF may be the ultimate sports saloon overall, but doesn’t quite have the feel good exotic factor of the QP. With Ferrari soon to announce their family 4 door SUV for god knows how much, 250k?, these fill the exotic family 4 door vehicle in a so much cooler way. It’s basically a Ferrari saloon anyway of course being from the montezemelo(?) era. And there are actually only 60 or so 4.7 sport GT S in the uk. I think your 150ish is total number of facelift 4.7’s, including the ‘S’ and the ‘sport GT S’ combined. And also, the earlier, pre facelift, 2008 4.2 sport GT S (a different model from the sport GT, very confusing) was also a ZF auto, not a duoselect. Nice review though, mine has always been on PS4S so can’t comment on the pirellis, but mine isn’t twitchy/tramliney(?) as you notice on yours.

Cars, motorcycles, etc...the Italians KNOW how to make an exhaust note. Good Lord...My Moto Guzzi motorbike has an exhaust note from the heavens, just as this Maserati does. I feel like any Italian brand is one of those things that many people have HEARD things about and they usually have a negative opinion of them. But, the people who actually buy an Italian brand, they are pretty much hooked for life. There's just something damn special about them. Sexy looking (usually), driving experience is enjoyable and masculine, etc.

January last year, I had a Quattroporte 4.7 GTS ZF for about 4 months. Same year as this but burgundy red interior. I'm sure mine had quad tail pipes. It was a lovely thing. Parked in Sainsburys once and a young lad came up to me and said that is the most beautiful car I have ever seen. Optioned out the car originally sold for £109,000. Cost me £15,000 with 51,000 on the clock in superb nick. How mad is that! Mind you that was before the prices went north. Watch for sticky buttons. Mine looked fine, but were quite tacky. Oh and watch for sub frame rot, especially in the corners. Although not the fastest thing I've ever owned, the exhaust note is something I'd never tire of. I sold it because it was only ever a bucket list car. Someone else can deal with the servicing.

Great review, be sure to thank the owner! Seriously, if you haven't seen it, watch the review of this car on Hagerty Revelations. The title says that it is "Scientifically proven to be an aphrodisiac". Seriously. They measured testosterone levels of men AND women after hearing this car. Listening to you talk, I find it hard to imagine you finding a replacement people mover that you will enjoy as much as this gorgeous piece of Italia. For perspective, I own (and genuinely LOVE) a 987 Boxster S, and a Model 3 Performance. Whenever you show this car, I STILL wind up going to Autotrader, and drooling a little.

In 2004, I tested the Quattroporte with cambiocorsa gearbox and it was a no go for me. In 2011, I tested the Sport GTS and I fell in love instantly. I bought it in grigio granito with full leather seats (dark brown, most of the GTS cars have the alcantara option). I've never had any problem with it. A few years later I traded it in for a GranTurismo S which I sold in 2018. The newer Maserati are not my cup of tea anymore. The QP trofeo is much better than the pre-facelift QP VI, but for me it's missing the elegance and nonchalance of the V Generation. And well, let's better not talk about the sound... James, it needs Michelin Pilot Sport tires. I live in Northern Germany, P Zeros are best at constantly high temperatures. They don't do it in our climate conditions.
