Always wanted to take a daily driver Ferrari to high mileage (at the time I was looking at 328's) but never got around to it. Have run a 24V Alfa Romeo 164 Cloverleaf for 18 years now and took that from 77K miles to its current 208K on the original engine. Oil pressure has stayed the same at 208K as it read back at 77K (both at hot idle and under normal driving). What makes me laugh is reading the Alfa's original handbook which states; "Oil pressure should read between 2 and 4 bar at maximum revs in 5th gear" - which equates to just about 150 MPH. "Righty-ho, I'll just go out and check that! Like on a weekly basis in the UK...!"

Ex 360 owner, possibly looking to buy another one. Aside from 20yr old, handmade supercar niggles.. On a dry (emphasis) road, there are very few cars that can match the 360. A remapped F1 with CS trans software is plenty, plenty fast enough. But not so fast that you wheel spin all over the place. Revving it out simply never gets tired. But they really aren't dailies. They become very tiring to live with. They're Ferraris - really authentic (but modern) Ferraris. So they need good weather, dry tarmac and preferably desolate, long sweeping roads. And you might just happen across driving mecca.

I had the same dilema when I bought my F430 F1, I also tried a manual 360 for the same price. The 430 feels like a more "serious" car in terms of performance, feels like it is on another league. You have more gadgets such as manetino, e.diff, an F1 gearbox that actually works, etc... The final touch is that sound which is mega in the F430, and nice in the 360 but not as nice IMHO. Also, I prefer the design and interior of the F430 feels more queality. But I do think in terms of maintenance a manual 360 is cheaper, and will probably hold value better if not increase.

The 360 has all the ingredients for a wonderfully tactile and engaging analogue modern classic car status. It's relatively low number of computers trying to wrestle control (eg. A mechanical limited slip differential vs electronic differential on an F430) from you makes them much more fun to drive than later generations if you prize driver engagement over automated self correct strategies implemented in modern traction control. Yet its still actually surprisingly modern feeling with its all aluminium rigid chassis with double wishbones all around. They respond extremely well to subtle optimizations for fast road enjoyment such as modern Michelin Pilot 4S tyres and geometry tweaks, ecu firmware recalibration for improved mid-range torque and upgraded brakes. Making the performance gap between them and an F430 much smaller.

There is a misconception, at least in the UK, that cars of this type are better with mileage below average. In fact, unless the car is stored in temperature controlled rooms so that seals don't crack when go dry, it's better (and potentially cheaper) when driven; recommissioning a rarely driven Ferrari, Maserati, Lambo and the like could very well require an engine out maintenance.

There's that ubiquitous Becker head unit again! Also seen on the Maserati 3200 gt and various Porsches of the same era. That 360 looks a bit like a McLaren F1 with its twin radiators up front, no pop-up headlights, no sharp creases, and D-shaped C pillars. Gone is the wedge design language, replaced by something a little more 246-like. Apparently the 360 was designed to accommodate golf clubs behind the rear seats. And I wonder just how close the front trunk volume is to that of a rwd Porsche 9?6. I guess this car was a victim of its own success, like said Porsches, the 308, and the Gallardo: they made a lot of them and by Ferrari standards they they started to seem somewhat... common. I never did warm up to this car due to its reputation for twitchy handling. The Challenge Stradale is another matter though. That one is special and looks better too.

Thanks Jay I really enjoyed that. Like you I have always pretty much hated the 360 putting alongside the Mondial (not quite as bad) or a Porsche 924 if you'll allow the mixed metaphors. Damian from the Car Guys did a excellent video of a rally he went on in Scotland in his 360 CS (can't be bothered to look up the correct spelling) and it was superb. He really opened my eyes to its virtues and I started to appreciate it for being the beginning of the modern Ferrari era. It was a step change from the 355 in terms of design philosophy and attempting to build reliable good quality cars that could compete (and fail) with Porsches of the era. Plus was it their first road car to feature F1 technology with that semi automatic gearbox or did that make an appearance in late 355s? Either way it was the beginning of an era. I also discovered that the difference between a 360 Modena and the CS was not that great, nothing like a 430 and the Scuderia for example . So yes along with your video I have finally started to appreciate the 360 and no longer malign them or anyone who owns one!!!

When I had the rear bumper repainted the body shop spent a lot of time cleaning the engine bay which looked amazing for a month or so! 🙈🤣 I might consider getting the red crackle finish redone as that is clearly an error state (although I kind of like it!) but regarding cleaning the engine it seems a little futile. The body is kept clean clean, wash (Meguiars Gold) then Collinite 476S wax! I fully appreciate a good fruity noise on an exhaust but this standard one sounds great when going through the rev range on load and quiet enough for daily use, plus if I go down the Ferrari certified Classiche scheme, I will need everything to be OEM spec, which it is currently is (including the rear panel between the lights - can’t call it a grille, because it’s not! 🤣👍) Cheers, Giles

I miss designs like this. Clean, simple, refined. Not a Halfords special. Saying that, IMO, the 430 design is better, but, this isn't that far behind.

But the 430 is the Halfords version of the 360...

@@5thgearouttahere Which part? I don't notice anything that particularly sticks out from the 430 body.

Great vid as always - still baffles me how they went from the beauty of the F355 to the monstrous looks of the 360. Have a great Xmas and thanks for all your great content.

I am always a fan of cars with few years on them but with a whole lot of miles, because it means they were NOT ABUSED, left in the garage, or driven stop-go 2 miles a day in heavy traffic, but they instead did a zillion EASY HIGHWAY MILES which leave many components (Brakes in particular!) with practically NO Wear. But with exotics like Ferraris or ROllses, low miles are the norm and high miles even on a young car severely hit the resale value. WHICH MAKES THEM SCREAMING BARGAINS for those of us who are NOT Math Illiterate!

still worth to buy? if so, F430 and 360 which one is better?? F1 is also fine? or manual is much better to maintain?

Jay you videos are so good especially the supercar ones and I love the Ferrari videos. I always thought the 360 was a beautiful car with a glorious sounding engine. My old boss had the choice to get either a 360 or a f430 and he test drived both but ended up getting the f430 a special edition one but was in rosso red (which if in my dreams I could own any Ferrari it would have to be in rosso red) and the 360 was in a yellow (!!!) So he Got the 430 which he loved but had problem after problem with it and although he never said it, I got the impression that he wished he'd of gotten the 360 .. Anyways loving the videos and I've looked but couldn't find one on the Sierra 500 cosworth or the escort cosworth so eagerly waiting for anything about them from you..thanks and keep up with the great content....

I guess if the 430 is faster then a manual 430 is the way to go. Can the after market give a 430 better steering feel than the 360?

The only way any Ferrari gets to 160k miles and look and drive this well is by having been very well looked after by it's owner(s) over the years.

The 360 is like the Windows XP of Ferraris. They could've gone from this directly to the 458 and no one would bat an eye.

Crazy the rate of progress in terms of performance, now a hot hatch is quicker than a Ferrari 360. That engine is a thing of beauty and sounds the business though
