Greetings. In early '00, when import taxes were still low, JDM cars filled the whole car market of East of Russia. If you were coming to city centre at the evening you accidentally found yourself at the car meet, which was similar to F&F1,2: Supra, RX-7, Chaser, MarkII, Cresta, Soarer, Verossa, Integra, Prelude, Skyline, Imprezzas, Legacy B4, Foresters and all other lovely Japanese cars. Many of them were heavily modified, racing from lights, drifting around roundabouts in winter. The sound of turbocharged 1JZ,2JZ, is stamped in my memory. Also, I do clearly remember RX-7 having fun after snowfall and shooting flames passing by. What a lovely era it was. Thank you very much for all your JDM cars reviews. They remind me of childhood and friends.

I bought a two year old TT6 in 1998 and still have it. Looks the same and not changed mechanically at all. In the early 2000's you were plain weird and scoffed at if you didn't mod your car; a modded single turbo car would fetch up to three times the price of a stock example. How times change, stock is now where its at. I am so glad I never modded my car. Its now worth a little bit more than I paid for it (index linked) as a nearly new car 24 years later. Absolutely bullet proof and no rattly dash.

I have an Evo 5 RS and a 6RS and both are highly modified.They really come alive with the CORRECT tuning. The 5 runs just under 700 hp and the 6 runs 420....everything has been modified and strengthened to suit the extra power and they are both a joy to drive, although sometimes the 5 is a bit more frightening than joyful! I would have no idea what to replace them with , if i had to, and have no intention of selling them, anyway. Totally understand as I drive a similar car, an E91 325i. It has the n/a N53 straight six producing much more music than power (which surely must be a very desirable feature). It's also a boring shade of grey with bodywork issues so very much the equivalent to this Supra. Sitting at an equivalent underdog position in the range compared to a 335i or anything recent with an N54/N55 turbo that everybody seems to feel obliged to crank up to stupid power. Thanks to encouragement from current pump prices I am achieving 38mpg combined whilst enjoying four adult seats and decent luggage space. Theoretically fitting a 330i intake with a remap would take it up from 218 to around 270hp so still room for improvement. But it's already a fantastic car that I would struggle to replace. Currently worth very little which takes away stress of ownership but maybe one day people will realise what they are missing thanks to cracking reviews like these...

Nice review James! I think you hit it on the nose. May I offer an inexpensive alternative to the very wonderful and spendy MKIV Supra? As you most likely know, in the US, you can pick up a Lexus SC300 (Toyota Soarer) for $5,000 for a decent car or $8,000-$10,000 for a nice car. The SC300 has the same non-turbo 2JZeeee-GE as in the Supra, a very similar suspension, and a stretched wheel base. Oh yeah, and a much nicer interior. The back seats can be occupied by actual adults for short periods. If you need more power, opt for the SC400 especially 98-00 models. Some SC300s even came with a manual transmission but those are almost Unicorns. I've been restoring a 98 that I purchased for $2,400 and refreshing the suspension and leather interior. It's a pretty sweet car especially with the 18" wheels and tires, thicker sway bar, and new shocks. Yeah, it's an automatic but a manual trans can be swapped into it. The auto is pretty smooth though. I like it especially on long trips but I would love to put an Aisin AR5 (R154) from a Pontiac Solstice or Chevy Colorado in it. Watching you enjoy that Supra is giving me the itch.

My first experience of a turbo being too big was on Gran Turismo 1. I had a burgundy Toyota Supra which I had tuned for stage 2 turbo kit putting out somewhere around 600bhp. It was fast and drivable round a circuit. But me being a kid I just thought that "Stage 4 turbo = better than Stage 2", so I slapped a stage 4 turbo on, which gave around 900bhp, and the car went from drivable on track, to completely undriveable accept in a straight line, because the turbo lag was so great that the car had no power for most of the low to mid rev range. It was quite amusing looking back because it was an example of how having a high amount of something isnt always the most important thing.... the stage 2 car was on boost WAY quicker and was considerably faster on the circuit.

Definitely of the opinion that big power isn't everything. I drive a DC5 Integra (around 217bhp as standard) and it's more than enough power for me to enjoy driving it on country roads and track. To be honest, with how the values of JDM cars are heading a lot of people are going to find standard / light tuned examples more desirable. Regarding the Supra, when I was younger I wouldn't have even considered a NA Supra or a Skyline that isn't a GT-R but they've definitely become a lot more appealing over the years, partly due to astronomical prices on the Turbo Supras/GT-Rs but also because they're still unbelievably cool cars regardless of the powerplant.

Hello Jay Emm l have been enjoying your reviews, rants and almost everything else you have done on this channel. l was listening to your talk on power and you said something like 220HP and 276HP for these cars originally. l just remembered that l have seen and heard that some so-called 'naked' bikes do 200 or more the likes of Ducati, KTM and l think BMW, they are therefore called 'Hyper nakeds;. It seems strange that these days 160 HP is now a middling number. Although most reviewers seem to state that it is very good and you really do not need more than that in a city or even highway setting, except if you do trackdays which not many do or can afford to. In a way it is bizarre the bikes have almost the same output as some of the former sports cars. The most troubling aspect especially in some countries where you can start of on such bikes. Let us be honest young people, if they could afford them would probably start out on those.
@freddieparrydrums2 жыл бұрын
agreed, bikes are bloody quick nowadays for cheap
@GoldenCroc2 жыл бұрын
This has been the case for almost 40 years now, its not a modern thing, in fact the top bikes back then had more or less the same hp as the top "hot hatchbacks", that isnt the case anymore. On top of that, getting the licence to ride one is harder than ever in europe, with multiple classes and higher age necessary. And furthermore, less and less young people ride powerful bikes, its getting to be an old mans game for real. So in terms of relative power vs cars, its less of an issue than ever.
@bobojo85912 жыл бұрын
@@GoldenCroc This is crazy, no wonder people think that bikes are dangerous, l always thought its because most people have never ridden a bike before. l was in that camp too till l started riding. Thankfully with all these modern tools, ABS, traction control, riding modes its a lot safer than before but still its about control, because ultimately the bike still responds to rider input and that takes some control and discipline.
@bobojo85912 жыл бұрын
@@freddieparrydrums They are but one thing l have always wondered about is ' have bikes been slacking in as far as efficiency goes or is it they are not a primary means of transport at least for most first world countries such that they are usually a toy, weekend special . l rode a Japanese 900 the other weekend l rarely did more than 100 due to traffic and a passenger. The figures were around the 6L/100 km mark and l know some cars claim that although they involve turbos and other such wizardry. Still its shocking that a bike with one person is doing slightly better than a car. I think bikes need to improve on that aspect.

@@bobojo8591 I see your concern, but as you have seem from what I wrote, there is no need to worry. Accidents are in most places lower than they have ever been. Regarding the fuel consumption, at the speed you said, it mostly depends on how much aerodynamic drag the vehicle generates, and in that regard the motorcycle hasnt got an advantage compared to the car, by as much as its weight difference implies. So its normal physics.

If you try the twin turbo version, in its stock original form and the six speed manual transmission you might change your opinion about the twin turbo version. The six speed transmission is worlds apart from the automatic... The six speed got shorter ratios and the transmission feels robust in and industrial way and a very weird way, it is not soft and easy like a Civic. It has weight to the action of changing gears.

I love this review it just shows that theres no need to ruin every supra ever with a gazilon hp
@paulshort10272 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a nearly sorted Supra. It is good to hear someone notice a Supra is not a sports car. As soon as you buy a Supra you wish you bought the RX-7, but then the engine takes such TLC you wish you bought that nice, reliable Nissan, which lacks the sex appeal of the Supra and around you go again. They all take much dollar to personalise and maintain, thus probably ruining them in the eyes of everyone else. I would love my Supra back, if only so i can start lusting after a Mazda again. lolz

These are so well made , look cool, have the street cred. ...but they aren't great too drive IMO...they do great at 7 or 8/10ths were James has it but I completely disagree about the steering, if the back end goes you'll struggle to get a warning ...I drove it when I was younger against other JDM machines and we were ragging the tits of them so I might have a new opinion now as an aul lad .. but an R32/R33 feels unflappable, an rx7 lets you know exactly what's going on but this gives you nothing when the tyres squeak which is always dangerous
