I went Porsche. At the price point of a 991.1 Base, there aren't too many Ferrari options in my price range. If I had been willing to stretch my budget, I could have just squeaked into the lowest price points, which is probably not advisable for such a car. Also, wanted a manual transmission. Could have found the Ferrari sooner (more with manual), but the Ferrari manual premium is $10-15k, where the less common Porsche manual is only $1-3k more for manual. That said, even if I HAD the coin, I probably would have favored the Porsche for a few reasons: 1) Insurance - rates are cheaper in the USA for Porsche & insurance won't require you to have a lockable garage or motion camera fixed on your car, as some insurances will. 2) Mechanicals - Choose the right Porsche (generation and cared for example) and it'll be a very reliable car for MANY miles. Harder to do that with a Ferrari. 3) Driving Aversion - A "high milage" Ferrari is 40k miles, but a "high milage" Porsche is 150k+. A testament to reliability, maintainability, and depreciation behavior. I want to be able to drive the hell out of this, and not think twice about doing so. 4) Practicality - As a second, fun-focussed car, practicality isn't too important, but if I make a longer road trip, I want to make sure I can haul whatever I may need. 5) Support Network - Porsche shops are FAR more common than Ferrari. The USA is VAST and occasionally desolate. If I'm on a road trip and the car breaks down, I'm likely closer to a Porsche shop than I am a Ferrari. 6) Manufacturer Support - Porsche supports their cars forever; continuing to create parts & offering modernized head units in perpetuity. Ferrari doesn't. Those are my reasons!

On the 'car community' issue, this is an interesting psychology thing. I've had it with boats in when I had my diddy starter boat, in marinas, people with huge boats often were very friendly reminiscing that they started with something similar and what fun it was etc etc. But a number of boat owners who had 'fairly' big boats could be very snobby how I wasn't worthy of being in the marina. Obviously NOT all but certainly more in that demographic than with very small or very big boats. I called it 'middle management syndrome'. Done reasonably well but not quite made to the 'top' where they wanted to be. I wonder if Porsche can attract a similar issue. (Once again not everyone) but because Porsche is a bit of a mid-brand, some of its owners need to puff themselves up a bit. (Usually by squashing down 'lesser mortals'). Not an exact science but I've seen it in boats, cars and even houses..

Expensive Cars and Boats! Whats the point of owning them if you aren’t willing to share the experience with the world! Not everyone achieves success so why not look at it as an opportunity to share, motivate and connect with people. Theres plenty of snobs in the world and most of them have some sort of inferiority defect if they look down upon you. Theres plenty of that in Miami. Im not sure what the contest is because unless you are the richest person in the world someone will always have more money.

I agree with much of what you say. Having owned both Ferraris and Porsches I would agree that owning a Ferrari is a special experience whichever model you drive, and however old it is, you are part of a special club. I was lucky enough to compete in the Pirelli-Ferrari Hill Climb Championship for some years in a 328GTB and that was fantastic. Even so, the one thing I would add to the debate, as a current Porsche 718 Spyder owner, is that 'flippers' and collectors aside, you are much more likely to see Porsches being driven hard on track or on road trips. As a long term-member of GRRC and someone who attends 6-8 track days a year, I am much more likely to see Porsches being driven hard (and usually well) but rarely do I see Ferraris on track being used like they are supposed to be. Now, as you say, there are a lot more Porsches out there, even so, I think Ferraris are more about the 'having' than the 'driving'.

Not to mention many (most?) of the quality track events are run by Porsche people, who also boast the largest instructor community. I think Porsche has plenty of knobs and snobs in the aggregate (almost all 911 people), but the active PCA people (which is a lot of people) are genuinely wonderful and welcoming and enthusiastic. (Also a 718 spyder owner) Maybe the vibe is different in the UK, or you’re only hitting C&C instead of track days. I’ve been to a few Italian car events…and my most representative memory is of the lady in the Murci on track in high heels. I kid you not.

Honestly every time I start to get interested in Porsche I look at the behavior of some of their fanboys and I’m a bit repulsed by the insulting, arrogant, self-congratulatory sanctimony that has always been inseparable from the Porsche brand. So while I generally don’t advertise that I own a Ferrari because of the Ferrari stigma, I don’t want any part of that insecure Porsche narcissism. Typical Porsche fanboy response to a comment like this? You’re too poor to afford a Porsche. You’re envious. You don’t understand cars, blah blah blah. Porsche has always attracted that type of idiot and I’m just over it. No interest. And it’s too bad because actually I do like the cars, and I know there are a a lot of great Porsche owners out there. Hell I’m friends with some. But the few bad apples spoiled the whole batch for me.

On the subject of the Porsche community and meetings, I have to totally disagree. When I bought my Cayman 987.2 Base, a Porsche group owner came up to me at a local car meet and asked about me and my Cayman. Him being an older 60+ fellow and me being 26 at the time, I really didn't expect him to take me seriously. But instead, invited me into the group and the Porsche In The Park they were having later in the year. I went to that, and everyone was just lovely and friendly. Not one person made me feel like shit, despite them having something like a 992 GT3 RS, Sports Classic or even a Cayman GT4 RS. Hell, they welcomed someone with a Porsche 914, a Porsche that is near enough forgotten about by most people. Speaking of both the 992 GT3 RS and Sports Classics (which the owner had both the 997 and 992 variants), they both eagerly allowed me to get in and sit in their expensive cars and take photographs. Me being someone who is generally quite introverted still, this welcoming attitude is something i've needed for awhile, and I couldn't be happier meeting some truly interesting characters in this group, it really changed my perspective on thinking Porsche owners are all suited up business snobs, and I was the odd one out due to my age and occupation, but this couldn't be further from the truth in my experience lol To give context, I live in North East Scotland, so i'm not sure what Porsche owners are like anywhere else around the UK. But from i've gathered, the typical snobby Porsche owner is much more prevalent as an English thing. Obviously not saying all English owners are like that, but considering you (James) live in England, you're alot more exposed to it. It really does depend on where you live, I guess. For all you know, there's abunch of Ferrari owners somewhere in America who treat people like how you claim people treated you and your mum. Different environments, different attitudes.

I drove a mate’s 488 this summer - devastatingly fast and stupidly capable. I then drove the same set of roads in my (well sorted) TVR Cerbera and it really put things into context. You just don’t need to spend all that money, if all you want is a thrilling drive. Modern cars are just too good, achieving monumental performance too effortlessly. Incidentally, was out on those same roads in an F40 a few years ago. Needless to say, it blew everything else into the weeds in terms of the experience, and I wasn’t even driving.

I came from owning every type of 911 to a 458 spider. I have no doubt across country my old 911 Turbo would demolish the big Fiat but at anything under 120mph it was just boring. Very very competent but dull. The 458 by comparison is exciting at 30 mph and 3 years of ownership later has proved to be more reliable than the 911 was. In the modern world where even a hot hatch is monstrously fast a car should be exciting first and foremost and the Ferrari has that in spades.

James is so spot on. 9 years ago we got our first Porsche, a 981 boxster. Absolutely loved the car, my wife takes it to work everyday. Once at a dealer for warranty repair, an older gentleman asked her what she brought that day. She said boxster, the guy said “oh I have a real Porsche, a 911”. A few years later, my wife showed up in a 991.2 gt3 to a Porsche meet, not one guy gave her the eye contact or establish a conversation, guys in their caymans and 911s with their egos hurt, or prob comment something along the lines like that’s her husbands car or she can’t drive etc. I absolutely hate Porsche clubs, I would be rolling in a lambo and they would say “u gotta get a Porsche”. They got too much group ego and not open minded. And 1/4 the pple we met don’t drive their cars but all they do is talk about market values and which model will appreciate… so foking boring. We love Porsches, have a 3RS and spyder, but we also love and own Ferraris and lambo. Diff charm and magic from each brand, and yes pple gotta look around for alternative charming cars rather than playing the Porsche dealer markup and flipper game

I´ve had a couple of 911´s and mid engine Ferraris but the 911´s always stick with me and the Ferraris are more like an affair on the side. I like that you can drive the Porsches very hard without having a lot of problems or pay a lot of money to maintain it! Also the Porsches are quicker on track although very underpowered compared to Ferraris!! Then I don´t like the attention you get from a Ferrari, I currently drive a 991.2 GT3 Touring, under the radar but still a great car to drive!!

There are few Ferrari models that don't have at least a few odd, off putting angles that simply never grow on me. Yes, including the older ones. (Notable exceptions: F355, F430, 288 GTO). That said, I completely agree that most of them are truly special and unique. And what you shared about most owners being enthusiasts is something I've heard about here in the States, as well.

The superiority of a Ferrari is not only the greater power, since one can install a big turbo into a Honda to get more power. The truth of the matter is the way the Ferrari delivers the power, and the handling, the smell and of course the sound.

I agree with all your five points. My '95 Supra sport roof manual and '08 F430 spider manual were never in the shop though. I kick myself for selling the Supra for USD20k in 2002. The F430 just works. I don't commute by car but I use it half the time I'm going anywhere. (Other half is an E39 M5 manual of course.) The F430 prices took a big hit when the 458 came out of course but after 15 years it hasn't lost much per year, probably cheaper than buying a high-end Toyota sedan every three years. Still feels really nice to get in and drive, and it's the only car I've never gotten a speeding ticket in: it's simply enjoyable even stuck in Tokyo traffic, roof down any time it's not raining.

Just took delivery of ordered M240i....so my point is I do have true grounded history to say that you are spot on. Yes, I butchered the English language to say it. The Ferrari Owner Club was full of fun, genuine people. I remember giving neighborhood kids a ride around the block and soon there was a line and it was an EVENT for them. There was a feeling of custodianship with a Ferrari and I happily paid it forward whenever a young boy would want to sit in the car and such. I was that kid once and never forgot my first ride. Nothing sounds like a Ferrari or, at least the cars I owned, smelled like one as well. The leather was real hides. It delivered on all the dreams I had growing up. So glad I did it when I was young. Thanks James for another well thought out topic and video. I have been a Porsche collector for many years but during COVID when Porsche prices were as high as Ferrari prices I decided to purchase a new Roma. The car was beautiful, fast and sounded pretty good but the stupid steering wheel controls and lack of some features that are pretty much standard on Porsche and other brands, irritated me so much that I traded it in on a GT3 Touring when an allocation came my way. I guess in the end I am a “function first” person who values style and sizzle but demands excellence in areas Ferrari just does not shine!

First up … I’m a Porsche person. I’ve had six Porsches, and have averaged 60,000 miles in each. They’ve varied, from Caymans & 991s to a 4.2 Diesel S. You just can’t do that sort of mileage in a Ferrari whilst maintaining peace of mind. My 911 comfortably did 26/30mpg. My 4.2 Cayenne does 34/44. I’ve always been able to park my Porsches, and relax in the restaraunt that night. A Ferrari driver will tell you, ‘Who cares about mpg!’ Pretty much everyone … that’s who. Perhaps not as much as an Alfa driver, but a Ferrari driver will somehow try to tell you that the time it spends off the road is somehow part of its ‘charm’ 😂 Porsche interiors are better. They just are! In almost every way. Visibility is better. Town or country. A new one? A Porsche is probably cheaper by 30% or more. In many cases, Ferraris sound better. After that … you’ve lost me.

Both Porsche and Ferrari have their pros and cons. Porsches drive really well, are extremely durable, fun to drive and as you point out-subtle unless you know what you are looking at (Carerra GT and 918 Spyder excluded). Ferraris are like prom queens!! They look fantastic, theres a sense of occasion every time you drive it, and many (not all) aspire to own one. They sound amazing, and play to your emotions. As it stands now, the majority of people on the planet will never get to experience a Ferrari. That is sad but also the reason the cars especially the v12, are aspirational items. This also makes it easy to hate/be jealous of those that own them regardless of how nice a chap the owner may be. Ferraris are modern, functional, fast sculpture based on the evolution of going faster/racing. Now having owned a majority of the higher end brands I have to say I really enjoy and appreciate Ferraris. I wish owners drove them more rather than let them sit in a garage. Bentley also is quite special and isn’t it interesting that VW group who shares and retunes its parts and engines across all of its brands decided to create the new Bentley Continental based on the Porsche Panamera platform? Porsche does things right too! The two brands appeal to different likes. If you can get the limited/ special low volume offerings from either brand you are doing great!

But still a Ferrari 😮‍💨 So the video make really good points about clubs, communities and things… But I don’t care that, I’m about the driving experience… And you truly can enjoy a lot pushing Porsche to the max any time you want! Hi James. While I agree there is some overlap in prices I see Porsche and Ferrari to be in different niches. I agree that for Ferrari money you get less car with a Porsche (918 and Carrera GT excepted) these days. However, for entry level Porsche money (early water cooled 911s and transaxle cars) there is no Ferrari equivalent. I and many other Porsche owners live quite happily in this latter category. I have little interest in the GT3/GT4s because I don't track my car, but if I was looking for a modern track car it would be Porsche over Ferrari.

Hi Jay! Thanks for the video…. Interesting…. I used to have a cayman S (981) and had no issues at car meets in fact it got lots of love. I loved the community around it and was a member of SCD where Adam Thorby always reminded me how well I’d done managing to buy such a thing. My mum sadly died 2 years ago. When I was young she used to say “if I could I’d buy you a Ferrari” so when we sold her house I had a plan…. Sadly for a relatively new Ferrari it was going to be just over budget and as a guy who loves driving extremely hard and doing track days I had to get real….. I bought a 992 GT3…. I paid slight overs (in Spain the retail is so high that overs go down quite soon after launch). But a 992 GT3 with Warranty or a non approved 10 year old 458 (in Spain they’re the same money!) …. I was just terrified of the maintenance. I’ve put 12k kms on mine. 4x track days and once it’s warmed up it does 9k rpm every single journey. I just extended the warranty by 3 years so it’s covered until Sept 2027…. I couldn’t do that with the old Ferrari. I just couldn’t.

I've been on the receiving end of car snobbery, and also had some great interaction with true car enthusiasts when out in my toy. OK, it's neither a Ferrari or a Porsche, but a Toyota GT86 (I really wanted a GR86, but just couldn't get hold of one, and there's no way I'm going to pay over the odds from the flippers) I love my car, it's pampered to death, but also driven hard when it does go out. I find that folk with VW's, Audi's, Alfa's, Ford's, etc., that cost just over what mine did (around 30K) are the worse for derogatory comments, yet those with their 100K+ cars are always friendly and want to have an intelligent conversation. I did do some geeky investigation and have worked out that my car is one of only about 7-10 of the exact make, model, year, colour and spec that exist in the UK, but to me, it's not an investment, it's a car, and for that reason it should be used and enjoyed. Oh and by the way.... more content while on the road, not sat at a desk. You are a car channel, and we want to see cars 😁

Leno is just a stubborn lambo fanboy, that's the only reason he doesn't buy a Ferrari. It's his loss.

Good vid James and very much one from the heart, and the better for it. I haven’t actually owned a Ferrari, but have had a Lambo, 911, Aston M, Maser and E-type and agree completely that ultimately it’s how a car makes you feel when driving it in a spirited fashion that counts. Re the communities, I’m pretty sure you have proper petrolheads owning all of these brands and they’ll all rub along pretty well, though have to confess that there are indeed probably more “badge owner’s” as opposed to real petrolheads in Porsche land than elsewhere, and that won’t help (not that other brands are completely immune from it)

Why Ferrari doesn’t interest me because their unreliable they don’t even trust their own product they never allow it to be compared against other models, KZbin comparisons sells cars that’s a fact and to do that you need owners to lend them the cars, Ferrari badge to me means expensive repairs you ding it you pay through the nose for it so who wants to drive it , think it was a bumper on a Tdf cost 30k 🥴 they just aren’t worth the money and their build quality isn’t second to none either for the price of them … I’d rather have a Porsche

If you need to asks what it costs you cannot afford it. In 2023 owning / driving a Ferrari has nothing to do with reliability etc. Think heroin chic catwalk models. Porsche is now just a cashed up scrubber Volkswagen.

I call BS on that. Many of my friends tell me maintenance on their Porsche costs them heaps of cash. I would rather have a Ferrari, oh wait, I do have a Ferrari.

Ferraris are poorly made they are highly strung and fragile .They are built for purpose and nothing else. remember on top Gear when they did that top speed run on an old runway and the stones damaged the chassis .THey have so many expensive problems and engineered obsolesce it seems a friend I know had a Maserati that used Ferrari parts and he kept having really expensive issues .A Porsche is tougher and more durable and built to last .Ferrari are very litigious .KZbin Top Gear Mclaren vs. Ferrari vs. Audi R8 paint problems (Spain Episode) and also WHAT REALLY HAPPENED TO MY FERRARI 812 GTS

Spot on re the cars. Ferrari as a brand carries more value. Throughout its history, it has engineered a range of award winning engines 6/8/12 cylinders that perform, and sound like nothing else. Most often they have engineered the best chassis of their kind, in different configurations; then clothed them in what are considered the most beautiful cars in their own right, thanks to Pininfarina. Creative and engineering innovation that pushes the boundaries, time and time again. Porsche on the other have engineered and re-engineered one key model: 911. That's fine, but this is really the only model that has pushed boundaries. The Boxster/Cayman is a good addition, but the rest? The GT and 918 aside, a number of the others have also been VWs in some form or another. 924 had a 2.0 ltr engine that originally came from the VW, used in the VW Camper. The Cayenne was a re-engineered Toureg, for example, thus the brand value dilutes. Ultimately, it boils down to what the person values most though, so I have nothing to say about the people who choose either, and both communities will likely have unsavory types.
