I truly second your thoughts. On Friday, I took a day off to enjoy my own F12. It's my first Ferrari, bought it a year ago. It ended up in a 13h trip over 7 mountain passes and 600km on one day. I don't recall the number of smiles I've had this day but I'm sure it was a lot. Most viewers here understand this, most people outside the car community don't. And that's ok.

Long time "car guy" starting with a clapped out 1970 Spitfire at age 17 . I paid $400 for it and had $50 left over in my bank account to deal with the failed brakes. Progressed through various Triumph's , Jag's and Porsche's. Have lived and breathed cars my whole life and ten years ago at the age of 57 paid cash for my first Ferrari , a 575 6 speed manual. Every time I get in it ,50 years melt away and it takes me back to that feeling as a 17 year old in that Spitfire and as Jay says "is an event". There is something very special about this car that is hard to define. Curiously , I had read about Ferrari's all my life and appreciated them but had never really thought I would want to or could own one. A parodox in itself. Long story but I eventually decided I needed to experience a V-12 manual Ferrari. Summed up...one of the best decisions I ever made.

37 years old here, who bit the bullet last year, and bought a Lotus Exige 350 sport. Though for 20 years I had been telling myself "one day I will own a Lotus", 7 years working abroad delayed significantly that goal. I blame you, for reigniting the lust for these pure, no frills sports cars, and for releasing the series of videos on the different Exige models. My hunt evolved from a Lotus Elise, to an Exige S2, before I decided to go all out and purchased a Military Grey, low milage one owner Exige 350 sports. I am back from a week end in the french alps, where we drove in a spirited fashion 10 distinct passes with my father and the local Lotus owner's club. Incredible moments, the howling V6 reverberating across the mountains, in the tunnels, us sharing the driver's seat, discussing the behavior of the car, how to best attack hairpins, and how to coddle overheating tires... I am the antithesis of the social marker car guy, I bought very selfishly that car to enjoy driving it. 1 year and a half in, the odometer went from 4000 km to 12000. I still am not very at ease with how much attention it attracts on the road, but the feedback from people has been overwhelmingly positive. Not a single refuelling session goes by without someone coming and enquiring about the car, or congratulating me on how great it looks. Thank you, for sharing your passion, and yes, making us dream about these incredible cars, in a world where half the reviews on current cars focus on how many menus the entertainment system contains. One day perhaps a 430 scuderia will be mine, but for now I am so enthralled by my mini supercar, working on my heel and toeing, getting out every week end for a spirited drive in the beautiful roads nearby.

I own and drive Ferraris (FF and 575) for my very own pleasure. I do not have the intention to impress anybody with them. I don't mention them in private conversations. I own them, because they give me an unbelievable pleasure to look at and and to drive of course. I have driven a lot of other brands, but no other brand can offer me this level of joy. So for me there is no paradox - there is just enjoyment! I love these Ferrari GT cars madly! And I believe James 100% that his motivation is the same!

I Think the issue is most people who have money buy with 0 passion, they buy an Audi ,BMW, or Merc to impress others not for themselve , most Porsche and Ferrari owners are not into cars they just got money and buy to prove success , which is fine , but the man driving Ford Focus RS , Camaro or Subaru Impresa etc has more passion , and did not buy it to say hey look at me. Best car is scene is American, JDM, VW Ford etc. Because they not about status

@@irw4350 With some people if you appear richer than then, they call you a crook and if you appear poorer than them, they call you an idiot. So you need to show them that sweet spot in the middle. Say you have a Ferrari, but you bought it to compensate for a stutter, a limp, and a bad childhood, which were all cured by buying the Ferrari (which you paid for by winning a lottery). i.e. lie to them. Here in California, I pay 46% and am continuously being told by the powers that be that "I need to pay my share". What they leave out is that "my share" is multiple times the average share. It is getting worse, class warfare is being promoted by the government and the press.

An older couple lived down the road from me in the same type of 2up/2down terrace that I bought as my first house…their children were adults and had long since left home and they had no need for a bigger house…so they had an Aston Martin on the driveway instead! 👌…they loved it and the road trips they did in that were worth more to them than a bigger house, they were actually living rather than playing at keeping up with the joneses 👍🏻

Anecdotes about selling Ferrari in Sydney around the year 2000 having sold Porsche immediately prior. -In terms of their interest the Ferrari owner could be very neatly grouped into one of two camps; The car as engineering or The car as art. Discussing engineering with the latter was a waste of time and discussions of its beauty with former equally a waste. -Many customers financed the Porsche, NONE financed a Ferrari in my 2.5 years. They did it easy and normally the price represented less than 10% of their net worth. My favourite moment was a hard working and successful factory owner who with his wife took delivery of a new 360 Modena. Standing in the workshop and seeing the car he broke down saying "we get up at 5:30 every morning to head to work and have looked fwds to this for 20 years".

Maybe the fact that I am an American affects this but when I see the interesting cars that you or Harry’s Garage or Jay Leno, etc. share with us on KZbin, I am more than happy that you are able to enjoy them. More power to you if that is what you choose to spend your time and money on. I am just as happy driving the less expensive car that I have now. Perhaps I will get more expensive and exotic cars in the future. But whether I do or not I am happy watching the videos you make of them and seeing how much enjoyment you get out of driving them.

Multiple exotic car owner here, dating back to 1994 when my 1st Ferrari arrived. Look, some people do buy nice cars to be flash,some to go fast, some because it’s a “me-too” clique, some to adore, some for the appreciation of engineering excellence and some for nostalgia. TBH now I’m 60 and have owned McLaren, Ferrari, Porsche, Maserati, big bore BMW, light and nimble Lotus and mobile lounges Range Rovers… thus unequivocally I can say yes I’ve bought each car for plus/minus every aforementioned rationale 🤭. Having said that I am as interested in a FIAT 595 as a Ferrari 812 / a tuned up lawn mower as a combine harvester / Ducati as a DAF….. that’s what makes real petrol heads tick…isn’t it 🧐

I was sitting in traffic with the hood down in Henley on Thames which had a TVR dealership in the high street, dreaming of TVR ownership. You couldn’t have said all of these things better. I bought my first Ferrari this year. I recently questioned my motives after thinking maybe I was bringing it up too much to others, but then realized that I was only mentioning it to people who were true car fans, and in many cases had nicer cars than mine. For me it really does stem from a similar desire to share the fun with others. It’s like being served the best steak you’ve ever had at a restaurant, and offering others at your table a few cuts from it - in your mind, they must experience how good it is or they will have missed out. There’s truly nothing better for me than driving a Ferrari. I don’t know why they make me so happy, or how the cars manage to achieve this. They are just magical vehicles. I want to share that.

Yes, I agree. The only reason I bought a Maserati is because I fell in love with the Gran Turismo and the Grand sport. When I was in Middle School, my neighbor owned a 350 GT and a Gran Turismo and I was introduced to Maserati in video games. For most of my 60+ years on this planet Ferraris were kind of beautiful things I saw only on rare occasions but were otherwise largely motoring irrelevancies to me - I could never afford one and thus my attention was focused more on the humble everyday cars that might have been within my financial reach. 'We covert that which we see everyday' as Hannibal Lector once memorably said. But I'm starting to change my viewpoint after all these years and I think I finally 'get it' now. God knows they are still utterly unaffordable and unless it is a old Daytona or a Testarossa I might still struggle to identify one model from another. But when I recently saw that (criminally underrated) Michael Mann film about the remarkable life of Enzo Ferrari something clicked in me - yes in a way no other can match Ferrari is special company producing very special cars that surely make the world a more interesting place than it otherwise would be. So please keep on making Ferrari content, alongside the occasional brown Austin Allegro stuff, and I dare say most of us will keep on with watching and enjoying it all

I’ve had two Ferraris and now back to Porsche for a third time. I think the telling comment is that of your three Ferraris two are in the shop. Mine weren’t bad, but the hunt for spares was never fun or cheap. The other factor is that while modern Ferraris are generally handsome cars, they used to be stunning, whereas Porsche were always functional. Now I look at the F12/812 school of styling and honestly think Aston and Porsche win on aesthetics. The 911 this year needed oil and brake fluid flushed, also petrol and some air in the tires.

I found my sweet spot with the R8, it ticks the boxes of what I want from a car and isn’t completely absurd for a daily driver. Price wise I had exactly what you mentioned, people can’t get their head around the idea it was general new car money. Okay there’s potential big bills, but that’s offset by depreciation. I do keep eyeing up Huracans and FF’s, but I don’t think I’d end up using them as much.

James, you’re not a tool because you have 3 Ferraris. You have worked hard to get where you are at and you want to continue your progress-thats admirable. You know what content makes you money. Additionally very few people start out with a Ferrari as a first car. You have to work to attain them. To your point buying a used Aston Martin instead of a golf R in s corporate environment might set off alarm bells that we are paying you too much. But you might just be smarter with your money than everyone else around you. They don’t consider high end cars because they don’t realize they can be bought at lower prices. There are plenty of people that have tried to knock my cars over the years. People liked to knock my Ferrari California. My Corvette or my gtr is better. Ok, I that glad that you are happy with your car. I am curious have you driven a California? Majority of the time they haven’t even been a passenger in one. One ride completely changes perspective. My point is its easy to judge or jump to conclusions without having experiencing it for yourself. Even you James have driven the same model multiple times and have reached different conclusions based upon condition of the car or road conditions.

The elephant in the video, if you will, is class. Cars aren't just means to get from A to B or something to put a smile on your face, they are a signifier of class, status and prestige. When your Aston-owning plumber gets comment they wouldn't get about a similarly- priced Golf, it's not because of the money they've spent, it's because they have a symbol of a higher status than the one making the comment (and higher than they "should have"). It's like Imperial purple - the colour that only the emperor was allowed to wear, even though there's nothing particularly magical about purple (now). Your Ferraris project that "I am one of the elite", whether it's true (or even meaningful) or not; and the comments about your collection aren't that you have three Ferraris, it's that you have more Ferraris than *they think you should have*. I bet no-one comments about Chris Evans' car collection the same way. Similarly the chap trying to argue him modified car is better - it's nothing to do with whose car gets to 60 fastest or how it goes round the 'Ring, it is the chap saying "you have a higher-status car than me. But you're not better than me." Which is a ridiculous position to take, but arguably it's a silly idea to project status through a transport machine - not necessarily sillier than doing it via handbags, but a lot more expensive. I think it's some subconscious link back to herd behaviour and establishing which male will mate with all the females, and at least these guys are competing with their machinery rather than killing each other.

I’ve been a Porsche dreamer since I was 10 years old. When I was 40 I bought my first 911 a 993 twin turbo. Then I got into the GT cars. In the 2000’s you could walk into your dealer and buy any 911 I wanted. In 2007 a fully loaded GT3 was $120,000 with PCCB brakes. I owned 3 GT3s. My last gt3 was the 991.2. Porsche invited me to buy a 918, I still have the invitation letter. When I inquired about the 992 GT3 I was basically laughed out of my dealership. And for a very minor upgrade they wanted almost double what I paid for my 991.2 GT3. I think Porsche has lost its mind. They are making very incremental improvements and making very Large price increases. A new 911 turbo S is $250,000 and that’s just crazy. I don’t think they’re worth it. When I was younger and money was tighter I could get any model I wanted, and now I’m older with much more money and Porsche wants me to hand over most of my equity to buy even a 718 Spyder RS which I don’t like. The new GT crowd couldn’t find a race track if I put it in their phone for them. We used to all go to the track. I’m going to look at Ferrari, and I know the games are the same but there are so many models now that you can find a good used model with almost no miles .

I bought my first Ferrari 20 years ago. It was a Mondial and I totally fell in love with it. Though I’d planned it for a few years it was an accident I bought one eventually. As a kid in the 70’s I never really had a marque in mind that said you’d made it. In the late 50’s when my parents bought their house out of some 40 houses on the street there was only them and one neighbour had one. That seemed like wealth to me. It wasn’t though they gave up lots to own that car. So my ferrari Mondial. I wanted a 66-68 fastback Mustang but my then missus had other ideas. So she says look at something else please. I wanted four seats and the Mondial was cheap. That started my obsession over them. Three Ferraris later (not all at the same time 😅) I still love them. I don’t care what else I could have bought because I bought what I wanted. Great video and I do agree on many of those points.

Now have an early Bentley GT that’s a great GT car. So I understand the pull , the desire and the pleasure of ownership well. As well as the wonder of good engineering.

I recently renovated a house and I have learned that craftsman arriving in sh1t car is a huge red flag. They always crewed things up and took them ages to finish a job. The craftsmen with a good car did a job well and usually weren't even more expensive since they finished the job quickly. Despite this people here in Czech Republic are perhaps even more envious of wealthy people than the British are.

Love the honesty in this video! Personally, I think I've been lucky enough to avoid the 'brand equals success' mentality. It just wasn't driven into me when I was growing up. To me, any fast car or expensive car symbolized wealth equally. There was no difference to me between a Ferrari, a Porsche, and Aston, or a Lamborghini. They just all meant success, but also fun. They were all cars I wanted to have, not so much because they were expensive, but because they were fast. Rolls Royce was in its own league for me. It was also less desirable for me in my youth because they were not sporty cars, and I didn't care about a luxurious interior or ride quality. I just wanted to drive fast. I remember in the early 2000s, when I was a child, Ferrari had somewhat of a reputation for unreliability, impracticality and crazy prices. They were also very, very rare. This is probably why I saw the likes of Porsche and Aston as the cars I would buy when I'd managed to gain the necessary funds, and not Ferrari.

I almost bought an F40 (would have been my first Ferrari) a few years back, but the owner thrashed it from cold, on the test drive. I then decided to spend the money on building a new house and since then, family has come to stay with my parents (and even my grandmother) being with us on a semi-permanent basis. I’ve had to settle for a 911 instead of the F40, but the happiness and satisfaction of “giving” to the family, is unparalleled. Making it in life might be best represented by a Ferrari, but being happy?

James, what makes you such a passionate & credible Ferrari ambassador is that you actually drive them & know what you’re taking about. Most Ferrari owners don’t! It’s only about prestige & projection of success, as they never seem to actually drive them, which is why I’ll never own one except a Dino that isn’t badged “Ferrari” & are now unattainable. I’m a 2017Lotus Evora 400 owner that I drive hard, daily in summer, & IMHO it has the finesse & nuance that Ferrari simply doesn’t. Period. Realy nice video .. don't worry, the attitude you describe in Brits is in fact identical to us here in Czech as well, and i'd say in most countries might be close or similar. I think nearly every car guy wants a Ferrari in his life, often we pretend we don't, because we know we can't afford one or can afford, but knowing, it will be big trouble it something expensive breaks down. That was exactly my joy and fear many years ago, when i bought my first used Porsche 911. It was a plain 996 Carrera 2 in silver and i was so happy to have it, but at the same time worried i have gone way too crazy and if things go wrong, i will hardly be able to afford fixing it. In the end things went OK... But i was used to cheaper cars, hot hatches, old BMW's and stuff, i could fix a lot of things myself or fairly cheaply at a garage. I have had many sports cars since, but i think i still have this "Ferrari fear" that if i once buy one, i'll struggle to afford to maintain it, fix it and even if i do, then i would have to admit myself, i have bought way too expensive toy .. hard to justify its costs. I drive one now already classic 911, the 3.2 Carrera from the 80's , car which is mechanical and pretty much simple and also few other cars i really like to drive, while i feel the cost of owning and using them is really good and affordable versus the amount of driving joy it gives in return. One of them is a Lancer EVO VI, other a Lotus and the last one a Corvette C6 with manual gearbox. And yes, i have driven few Ferraris in my life, it was a great experience, but in terms of running cost per "smiles" it gives back in the driving, they are just too expensive i think. However, love your 550 Maranello, it would be easily one of my dream cars, greetings from Czech 😀

I dunt get to see every video but I’ve seen the ones that I can and especially those that pique my interest and this one certainly does as I love Ferraris and decided sometime back in the 90’s or 00’s that was my favorite brand. I know you have 3 Ferraris from the FEW times I’ve caught you talk about them and I wish I could afford (or at least the chance to drive) one; but at NO time have I ever been annoyed at you owning (or announcing you own) them. There IS a distinct difference though between you and KZbinrs (myself included but NOT monetized yet) that start off from “humble beginnings” and do things that are quirky and daft (I’m not a Brit so enjoy the idiom) and then as they grow and become nuevo wealthy QUICKLY start having Porsche, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Aston Martin, etc content, WALK AWAY from their humble beginnings and start SHOWING OFF THEIR NEW PURCHASE AND HOUSE ETC!!!!! I’ve stop watching Tavarish after his content became EXCLUSIVELY about the latest Lamborghini or Ferrari he bought and then joining Hoovie, Demuro, and that idiot from Vinwiki fur Top Gear inspired (but not even close to as entertaining) comparisons and competitions. There IS a difference between you tastefully explaining the difference between cars you’re familiar with (and ownership IS a reputable reliable factor) and those you know in passing or from reputation. I appreciate your take and your explanation even though you owe NOBODY the explanation- it WAS a good rebuttal and a good take. I bought a cayman 4.0 last year, which is - not for the brand or car, but for the feelings to drive, my childhood dream. in fact there was no cayman when i was a child, but when it came out when i was a student, i knew, this car is a thing for me. i always wanted a car, that sounds like the games i played. that feels like an animal, when i drive it. and since i can not afford a v12 or v10 (while i found out that a gallardo is affordable), i was excited to have a naturally aspirated 4 Liter sports car with top top suspension and brakes and all the stuff that makes driving 250kmh on the autobahn much more safe than in the 90s. And since then i am really confronted SO often with those points you mentioning, which i was totally unaware about before. Yes, the interior, PDK and such is from the older 911. yes, some things look familiar to volkswagen/ audi in the car, but what really annoys me is, that I am looked at like i am a rich kid. And like the author of the video, i feel treatend to mention that i bought the car myself and i did not get heritage or lottery tickets. and no it is not leased. no it is not 90% financed with an an rate of 50% in 5 years. I just saved money for it for a couple years. and i did not buy it to get pussy or make anyone think i am better. i bought it, because i like the FEELING to turn the engine on. I like tipping the pedal. I like coming home with it. and yes, i could have bought an M3 or just a used RS6 for the same money and i would NOT be half as bad as this.

That has nothing to do with nationality. There are lots of people in Germany that have the exact same lifestyle. German cars can also be a headache sometimes. BMW 8 series for example. I did motorsports with a historic racecar that was road legal. At one point I had 5 cars and two motorcycles. And there was always one car/motorcycle that needed attention.

I reckon you've been listening in on my conversations over the last 24 years that I've been very fortunate enough to own Ferrari's. I used to try keeping my ownership as secret as I could until a friend of mine once said "Owning a Ferrari isn't something I'm going to boast about, but I'm not going to lie about it either". Since I've been saying this I've found it takes the wind out of a lot of sails. My cars are for my enjoyment, not other peoples judgement of me.

My uncle has a 355 GTS and my dad still has his first 964 (aka 1 owner car) and sold the 993. Put it that way, with this era of Ferrari, you end up having lots more stories to tell, some of which involve hurting your wallet but they re still told smiling whilst those listening go like "oh no, really?!" (e.g. 1st longer drive involved heavy rain and a leaking roof - a common issue as it turned out, I became a slightly wet passenger). The Ferrari is drama and occasion no matter what you do and the engine noise is just insanely special, the Porsches are: you re really going for a drive with a stronger focus on the road than anything else. I m not a fan of the newer Ferraris of the past 15-20y (F12 is the exception) but the really old ones or maybe up to the 430. The attention you get would annoy me if it was mine, it s cool when you re taken out by a relative every now and then but I wouldn t want that on a more regular basis. Most driving anything newer than a 458 come across like ppl that are far less of car guys than those in older ones but the very same applies to other brands as well (yes, also Porsche! but to a lesser degree). Edit: Regarding your audio question, I didn t hear any difference but I watched this with very mundane Logitech speakers. I actually didn t know that videos showing luxury items pay better, I thought it mostly depends on the country you watch from and the number of views (if it s not sponsored).

Ferrari to me represents the dream. I’ve loved cars all my life, Corvettes, Porsche, Mustang. Camaro, but Ferrari always has been special. I now have three Ferraris. My firstie a 308GTS bought back in 1987 is still in my garage now waiting a mechanical refresh. My 488 spider bought three yrs ago. And a v12 Lusso just bought this yr. Every time I take either modern one out I never fail to smile. Next yr the 308 will be done and I’ll be enjoying that gated manual and carbureted V8. I’m always willing to talk to anyone be it at a gas station, or in the parking lot of the store about the car. People ask to take pics which I gladly permit. The cars are art and I am grateful that I’ve been able to afford them.

what an interesting video. I'm a bit out of touch with the cost of new cars as I've always bought old ones as that's always been my cost point that I can afford. However I love cars and the rarer the better as far as I'm concerned. I'm fascinated with the history of how and why a car was designed as well as how its built and what gives it its uniqueness as well as its performance etc. When I was lucky enough to first meet you, I didn't know that you owned a number of Ferrari's. But when I found that you had, it impressed me even more as you are the real deal sir, a true car nut. Your knowledge of car details is astounding. You bought them for what they are, unique performance cars that have that something that excites you. Sir William Lions once said "The car is the closest thing we will ever create to something that is alive." and I totally agree with him. a twisty road and a car are a great combination to enjoy and feel how alive the car is. Having seen, heard and even been lucky enough to travel in your F12 you ooze your passion for it. I completely get it from the way it looks and sounds to the way that it performs is simply intoxicating much like many other cars. I get to drive old Porsches and enjoy them for which I feel very fortunate. Keep doing what you do best. Talk about cars, weather it be a Mazda that is a small family hatch right through to your F12. All of them have something to say abou themselves and for one I thoroughly enjoy watching you video's. Long may it continue!!

I've subscribed to your channel exactly because the videos about those (for me) out-of-reach cars. Hell, I can barely spot Aston Martins, Lotuses, Ferraris, S2000s and such things on the streets (living in the eastern ends of the EU). And yeah, people are like this, a lot of prejudice and envy. I have 3 cars, two of them really rare in my region (a Daihatsu Copen and a Honda Stream), and boy, people do raise their eyebrows, even if all three of them taken together have a market value about only 10k EUR, at best. But if you drive a convertible or a coupe, you get quickly labeled. You're doing a great job, James with these videos, and if it helps you achieve your dreams, it means that you've earned and deserved the cars you're driving. No need to justify to anyone.
