Today I'm back behind the wheel of a 2014 Lotus Evora S. A wonderful car, but almost completely unloved except by those who were brave enough to buy them. With the Evora finally being discontinued this year, I take a look back at the car and see if I can figure out why.
#Lotus #Evora

This channel lacks even the slightest hint of snobbery, and I just watched 20 minutes of “Brit in Lotus on damp B-road”. On top of that, you avoid a needlessly clinical approach to car specs. It’s just pure, unadulterated appreciation for driving. Like many, I don’t come here to see the latest M4 video, I come to hear James’s unique take on whatever he’s prepared for us, because his take is always entertaining and authentic. And that is *truly* powerful currency on a platform such as KZbin. Bravo.

Kinda same, I like that his review looks just like some familiar regular bloke telling you the truth, just more eloquently.

The most lovable feature of this channel, is that James gives you the impression of being the sort of bloke you'd meet in some isolated country pub, wondering why he's drinking lemonade with his pie and chips, and when you get chatting, he tells you he's leaving the beer aside so that he can enjoy his new car properly ... and then invites you to share the ride. Then, after you've narrowly avoided prolapse because his new car is a bona fide rocketship, he turns to you with that inimitable smile, and says "goes well, doesn't she?" :D This being followed by him reaching for a notepad, scribbling down contact details for where you can get your own, and dropping you off home with the exhortation to get in touch if you buy something interesting he hasn't driven before, so you can do a swap for a week. :)

Some channels give you tyre-shredding oversteer, others jaw-dropping cinematography, but this one gives you unprecedented car-chat. How a car drives and the way it looks are important, but just as important is 'what it's about.' It's a huge part of being into cars. There's a genius to your work James.

@@bmtziii640 No. While I had 'reliability concerns' before buying my first Lotus (a new S4s) in 1996, I looked into it, found out the quality control really improved during the time GM owned Lotus, and bought my first of three new, from the dealer, Lotus cars. No issues with any of the 3 Lotus cars I've owned. My latest is an Evora GT. What a beast of power and handling. A handmade car that you never see on the road due to limited production is a joy for those of us who can afford this privilege.
@Greg_Chase

@Emerald Pipes Learn to write software. You could make enough to pay cash for a brand new Evora GT in a few months if you do some software consulting. If you don't have rent to pay etc. you can pocket everything you make. A lot of people do this. It's detail-oriented work and not for everybody but it pays well. The first new Lotus I bought in 1996 - an Esprit S4s - I paid cash for. I had only been out of college a short time, a couple years. How did I do it? I got a job writing software at a startup and got 0.15% of the company stock as part of the 'incentive stock option plan.' It may not sound like much but that tiny percentage was worth millions. When the company went public, the first thing I bought was the new Lotus. People who start coding early can pay their way through college, have no student loan debt, probably be making more than their parents, then get rich in a few years writing code in startups. Good luck.

The 2GR-FE is an amazing engine. I had one in a toyota Aurion for 8 years. The guy i had driving it put 360,000km on it. Other than very routine oil changes and one set of oil cooler pipes (known problem, preventative maintenance) the was was super reliable. We would have sold it at 200,000 but we had spent that little on the car we took a gamble that it would stay reliable, what an engine, who ever thought it sounded like this.... amazing.

I think if you buy an earlier Evora they have probably bottomed in price (last year plenty for £25-30K) and like James mentioned might start to go up. Lotus have also recently announced lower fixed price servicing costs from £270. So ownership should not be wallet draining.

Great video Jay. I own a Lotus Elan M100 S2 and what I find odd is that Lotus always seems to write the M100 completely out of its history, even at the recent launch of the Emira they jumped from the Esprit to the Elise. I thought it was because it was a sales disaster, but if you're right the Evora actually sold less than the M100, so that doesn't make sense. Lotus must just be pandering to the track day hero's who won't accept a front wheel drive Lotus, but like you said about the Evora, people should drive one before they judge.

Was massively excited when the Evora was unveiled, and then by pure chance I ended up driving near Loch Lomond at the press first drive event, with them rocketing past my then girlfriend's Fiesta. I hope with the Emira they do offer a genuine entry version of the car that is fast and fun to drive, rather than being scary to drive or afford. As much as I love the sound of the V6 a turbo 4 with around 300hp would be great for me, although I know many commenters will inevitably want a lot more power!

Test-drove a s/h Evora S at Bell & Collville sometime around 2015, when my 911 started showing signs of the usual engine problems. Absolutely loved it, for all the reasons Jay says. I’d looked at Lotus carefully and decided that the Evora really was the ideal one to get, usable but still fun. Spent the money rebuilding the 911 engine instead of px’ing it for the Evora; that was, with hindsight, a mistake, I should have fixed the 911 AND bought the Evora.

An absolute dream car. But, I love the older version, caus the interior of the "new ones" is not my style, especially with those horrible plasticbuttons in the cockpit. I’ve owned my 2014 Evora S Sports Racer for two years now (after 7 in an Elise) and I honestly don’t think I’ll ever sell it. It is sheer joy to drive!😃 The fact that it never sold well, guarantees it’s exclusivity and hopefully it’s an appreciating classic. Every drive out I’ll spot half a dozen 911’s (and yawn), I hardly ever see another Lotus, let alone an Evora, let alone an S SR...I like it that way. Thanks for a great vid Jay and thanks to all the sheep who bought something German instead!👍🏼

I've got fond memories of the Evora S. The later 400 never did it for me as the suspension was much stiffer, nor did I like the updated interior.

Interesting. I've been considering "upgrading" to a -400 but I think I'm going to have to try one first.

A genuine lovesong to Lotus. You don't see that often. I doubt Lotus would be my cup of tea, but I could feel what he was saying the whole video. Excellent review.

when I saw the first pictures of the Evora I thought it looked more bland than the Elise. But it has grown on me. And today this car I think would suit me very well.

I think your remark at around 2:20 sums up the "failure" of the Evora: people saw it as the next step for the Elise/Exige, a supercar to take on the high end Ferrari's, Lamborghini's and Porsche's. And it simply wasn't.

Always loved the lotus ethos...the driving experience, suspension, handling and power to weight dynamics, but sadly the final fit, finish and detail refinement was always their one slight Achilles heel, but always a pure delight to drive.

Really enjoyed this video as with all your early Evora content when no one else was covering it., Evora looks great in this cover, shame so rare.Here's hoping the Emira is more successful. Hard job taking on the Cayman and 911, think Lotus missed a trick with the original Evora that the Esprit did so well - providing supercar performance and looks for a lower price. I get the build quality concerns but surely the engine is bullet proof vs. Porsche issues and no rust!

Here in Oz a 2020 Evora GT410 is £124,543 ($223,340 AUD) Cheapest manual in country today is a 2012 Evora S £56,000 ($101,000 AUD) Evora may be my favourite Lotus actually.

Absolutely love this! Bought an Evora back in November sight unseen without ever driving one. Makes my e90 BMW steering feel pedestrian. Mine is the non-S but still loads of fun.

Being a non S evora, is enough fast? I have an Audi TT mk3 230hp, and I am thinking about a NA Evora. Before the TT I had a MX5 (only 131 hp) and it was more funny than the TT. Of course, the TT is very fast. Thanks!
@JustinBakerLife
@JustinBakerLife 2 жыл бұрын
@@xjk5Mikel It was fairly fast, but you may be slightly disappointed. I actually sold it last month. I drove it for about 7 months and sold it for more than I paid for it. It was an incredible car, but I want to pay off my house, so I decided to sell it. The handling was unreal though. The guy that bought it also owns a 997 - 911 Carrera S and he said the Evora handles way better than the 911.

@@JustinBakerLife thanks!. So the base Evora you say that could be a bit disapointed... I think that an Evora S is the answer, but now I dont have enough money for it. Maybe is better to keep my Audi TT, better than the Evora NA...?
@JustinBakerLife
@JustinBakerLife 2 жыл бұрын
@@xjk5Mikel I would say the Evora NA is a far superior car to the Audi TT (depending on the year and spec of the TT), but the Evora may not be MUCH quicker. The Evora looks better, handles better, but may not be enough of a step up in speed to justify the extra cost. Unless the handling and looks are enough. II hope that helps. Evoras are not cheap right now, mine was the cheapest in the country when I bought it and now the cheapest NA even, is still almost $10K more than I paid for mine and it has a salvage title. Mine was in perfect condition and had a clean title.

Great report on a magical car. Mine is a near identical model, built in 2012 when I bought it new after it served as the Brussels Motor Show press car for my dealer Lotus Thierry VERHIEST in Ostend, Belgium. The upgrades compared to the original car had just been introduced. It’s nearly this spec, albeit with the IPS auto box. It’s been my daily driver since,, with nearly 100000 KMS on the the car. Fabulous machine, with very limited issues, all ironed out by Thierry and his skilful and passionate team. If you want the best Lotus dealer on the Continent, look no further! I bought it after having owned two Elise’s, and I’ve never driven a better car. Sole difference with your yellow 400: my paint has never come off, not even by the wind…
