I could be wrong, but I think the symbol thing was him rebelling against Warner Bros. He used it until his contract with WB was over and went back to Prince after he got control of his music.

This is accurate. We discussed this in Uni Business Law. I'm not a lawyer, but I am 100% sure that despite whatever PR they did for the fans, it was all a contract dispute involving legal access to his name and art. When he changed to the symbol, as a Prince fan, I was annoyed. When the REAL reason came out publicly after the statute of limitations or contract term was up? 😮😮😮 OMG 😲 That was freakin genius! Go Prince! Stunning idea. I didn't Google any of this bc I lived through it. 😂 The spin on that symbol-branding strategy? 👏 👌 (25+ yrs as Comm Director for Wall Street companies) - 🌴🎸

WB hinted that they would not let Prince use Prince to record under that name if he left WB. Prince came up with the idea of the symbol which he trademark-which WB could do nothing about it. Once his contract ended Prince returned to his original namesake. George Clinton spent tens of millions trying to use and get the name parliament. George lost that trademark to the music corporation and all of his money in that process. Prince knew better.

Hi #flexer. Yes Prince had huge beef with warner bros as he wanted out of his contract. He stopped using Prince and used the symbol. However, the other really important thing is that warner still had publishing rights & owned his music, so therefore owned him, hence having 'slave' on his face. Music was the only form of art where the artist didn't own their work.i.e. artists/painters own their work until they sell it. Photographers own their own work and keep the negatives, unless they sell them. So Prince wasn't happy that he didn't own his music. So Prince's actions changed the music industry and set a precedent for artists to own their music. Prince's fight for control of his music changed how artists negotiate with record labels. He negotiated with Warner Bros. to regain ownership of his master recordings, which could have been worth hundreds of millions of dollars.... So you see, Prince really did change music forever!!! 💜💜💜

A largely excellent post, BUT, just to be clear, Warners did not own Prince's publishing rights, Prince did. They did own his maters though, which is still significant and what Prince was rightfully fighting for. As you pointed out, it is a uniquely perverse aspect of the music industry that an artist does not own their creations and while Prince was not the only artist to complain about this, he was certainly the most active about it and was the one responsible for driving real change in the industry in this regard.

He was in a row with Warners Brothers, his record company over the fact that WB owned all his music including anything he under his name. So, Prince devised a genius plan to change his name so legally he could hold around his record company. Thus the Love Symbol ❤️O(+> was born. There are several interviews with Prince where he discusses the name change and his fight for Emancipation from WB.

The person doing this video doesn't know or care about the music. It's like someone just put this script in front of him. The Rainbow Children is one of his best soul albums. You really need to listen to that one. Funky, groovy, thought provoking and black pride. Prince was blacklisted at the time he released The Rainbow Children and he was speaking truth to the man. This is why it "flopped" because it was not mainstream and was never meant to be. Check it out. Some of his best work.

* '33121' has some really good songs: FURY is canonical rock with a pinch of Santana, TE AMO CORAZÓN is a niiiice ballad, 3121 is space funk, BLACK SWEAT is.. infectious! * Only for containing the single THE WORK, 'The Rainbow Children' is a must. * 'Musicology' for DEAR MR. MAN, CALL MY NAME or, specially the title track MUSICOLOGY wich is 10/10. * 'Planet Earth' has a super funk danceable happy upbeat song titled CHELSEA RODGERS with Selby J. co-leading vocals. Prince gave away 3 million copies of the album with the British tabloid Mail on Sunday. Once again, THREE MILLION ALBUMS FOR FREE... Just for the 3 quids that the newspaper cost. * That about "last second shows" is not new for Prince, he already do it in the eighties. There's a bootleg from 1988 known by different titles, one of them is 'Small Club', recorded in The Hage, Netherlands. It contains some adaptations of his own songs and a few covers from other artists: JUST MY IMAGINATION by The Temptations is amazing, one of my favourites guitar solos ever. The sound is raw because it was recorded directly from the soundboard, but you can smell the epic of a jam session through the speakers.

I remember people nearly losing their minds once Purple Rain was released. Then he started getting HUGE TV performance time, and people couldn't get enough. His avant-garde style of trying different things and albums of all types of music just blew people away. Finding out he was self-taught on instruments and was an expert on so many instruments, he would garner so much respect. Watching Prince do things for the sole purpose of making Michael Jackson cringe became a daily talking point. I really miss hearing his new music releases. A true musical savant.

Aww, nothing about Camille, Nothing about Nothing Compares 2U, Nothing about Crystal Ball/The Truth/Kamasutra being the first internet released album and also first crowdfunded album, nothing about Love4OneAnother - the internet release of the song or the charity of the same name, nothing about other side projects and proteges - the family or how he wrote for kenny rogers, the staples, patty la belle, chaka khan etc, nothing about how he was uncredited as playing guitar on Madonnas "Like a Prayer" until 2014 I think it was, nothing about how in Under The Cherry Moon (My favourite film of his) was how Kristin Scott Thomas hit the big time in showbusiness, nothing about how he gave Planet Earth away with concert tickets, or that the Musicology album was able to be given away with concert tickets and still be able to be counted towards chart entry, nothing how 20Ten was distributed through a Newspaper here in the UK as a free supplement, nothing about his concert movies "Welcome 2 the Beautiful Experience" "Love4 One Another", "The Undertaker", "3 Chain o' Gold". There's a lot missing, but as it stands, this is a good introduction which is what it was supposed to be. What I don't get is just how many GenZ reactions I see where you all squirm at the sexiness - what is that about?! Particularly where you can't look at the Lovesexy cover!! Dude, I'm straight, but that's just a sexy man's body and, thankfully, Prince was a maverick in breaking down ridiculous taboos around human sexuality and that sex should be celebrated (but not at the expense of love). I love that you’re sprinkling in these informational videos to provide you with more info about Prince. I would add that, while in some cases Prince’s later albums weren’t as commercially successful, there is still great music on those albums. I think sometimes critics and the general public want an artist to pump out the same thing over and over. That was not how Prince’s creativity worked. He was always moving forward and trying new and different things musically. Plus, it would be nearly impossible to maintain the commercial success he had in the 80s and early 90s. 💜💜💜

To be fair Prince’s music was more controversial language wise so not always family friendly. Prince always challenged his listeners by changing his music sonically and style wise. Where as most artists (except the Beatles) stay with the same sound. That makes your sales not as big as those other artists. The rave unto the joy fantastic album-didn’t do as well; because other record companies blocked Prince from releasing singles that he had with duets with Gwen stefani and Cheryl crow. Those artist’s labels refused to allow the singles to be released.

So to pi** them off, changed his name and began releasing substandard music until they let him go. He was then free. There is so much wrong with this video, and I was trying to just let it all slide…. But saying that Prince “finally discovered the internet” in 2011 is bonkers. He was the first major artist to release an album solely online in 1997 and had several fan websites in the late 90s and early 2000s where he released internet-only singles, had chat forums for fans, wrote his own blog, sold merch, and members got access to soundchecks and preferred seating at shows. Other artists still haven’t caught up to that sort of approach. Prince literally won a Webby lifetime achievement award 5 years before this video says he “discovered the internet.” 🤦🏻‍♀️ And the distribution deal with WBR in 2014 was part of a deal for Prince to get his master recordings back. Anyway…I could spend all day going through and fact checking this video, but I won’t. 😂😂🫣 That internet one just really got under my skin. Lol. They missed a bunch of albums too. But it’s definitely a decent overview, and I enjoy watching you learn more about P. 💜

When Prince signed the original contract with WB contracts weren't what they are now & he was 17 & of course didn't have a lawyer to review it. He signed a contract that basically signed EVERYTHING, including his name over to WB. He felt like he was a slave. They said they owned his music & artwork & songs & everything. He couldn't make any decisions on any of it & we all know how Prince wanted everything his way. The symbol & various things like that were his way to rebel & to release things without the name Prince attached to it. Most people thought this was a publicity stunt but I super respect what he did. Also you were asking about how he could be considered sexy or anything else with some of his weird clothing & album covers.... as you've probably heard a million times, it was a different time. What was considered sexy was very different than today. What is deemed "sexy" is simply an opinion of an individual. Also, I don't think the crazy clothes were for publicity either. I think he genuinely liked fashion. He dressed like that all the time - never what we would consider normal. Really, I think that dude's brain was on another level. Amazing musician. His real name was trademarked by the label, so he couldn't use his own legal name Prince. So, he created the symbol to be his trademark. Also to this day there was of unexpected and shady things going on around his death. I live in the Minneapolis metro area not far from Paisley Park. He did several interviews exposing Hollywood and the government shortly before his death. They wanted to shut him up and steal all of his music. There was a lot of fighting over his estate and that unreleased music after his death as well. So did they just want his stockpile of unreleased music and for him to shut up? Sure seemed that way. Btw nobody around here that followed everything that happened that he was "alone" when he died. His personal doctor was a real piece of crap too.

Oh please, stop with the "shady government silencing Prince" conspiracy, it's absolute nonsense. Prince was in terrible pain from needing hip surgery and not having it (due to JW beliefs - also, the cane he was constantly seen with later in his career was not for show, neither was him stopping wearing heels). He was getting black market painkillers, as he didn't want to risk his personal medical story being sold by a doctor to the media (again, throughout his career, Prince was meticulous about controlling his image and was probable one of the most successful celebrities at that). As a result, he was taking pills where you could not be certain of their contents and, hence, he accidentally took fentanyl. Prince had been telling his truth about show business and politics since 1980, but the government suddenly decides to MURDER him nearly 40 years later??! Give it a rest!

The video you just watched isn't 100% accurate. It's pretty good though. It's about 95% accurate. Although 3121 and HIT N RUN PHASE ONE were distributed through UMG, Prince's albums (except PURPLE RAIN, PARADE, GRAFFITI BRIDGE, and BATMAN) are distributed by Sony Legacy. When he went back to WB, he gained ownership of all of his master recordings from them and they distributed 2 of his last 4 albums. So, you might not have issues with UMG regarding Prince. However, UMG does administer his publishing company (NPG Music Publishing).

#Flexer 💜, While this video is informative, some of the info is a bit misleading. Understanding the beef between Prince and Warner, there were number of issues #1. Warner Bros. as did every record label at the time schedule and a promotion budget for putting out music, approximately every 12-18 months. In addition, the artist would be competing with himself and neither record would sell at their maximum potential because buyers who could only afford one would have to choose. This works well for most artist because it takes about 12-18 months to finish touring for the previous record, rest up from the tour, writing and recording new music for the next record. Prince was constantly writing and recording new material even when he was touring, according to band members Lisa and Wendy, and recording engineers Dr. Susan Rogers, and Peggy Mc Creary, all of whom I personally and had the opportunity to ask. Prince saw his work like getting a daily news paper. He wanted Warner to put out music more frequently, closer to twice per year. #2. At contract renewal with Warner, Prince wanted 60 million dollars, which eventually became 100 million, on par with his counter-parts Michael Jackson and Madonna. Prince got 100 million on paper, but not in actually money because the structure of the deal required that each new record sold a certain amount. That didn't happen, leaving Prince making pennies on the dollar compared to what Warner was getting out of the deal. So, Prince wanted to re-negotiate his deal. Warner refused, Prince threatened to leave the label and sort it out in court. Warner then told him, he could do that but he could not use on another label using the name Prince, his legal name, it as well as his master recordings belonged to them. This is the point when Prince started writing slave on his face. The reason he changed his name to a symbol was so that he could record new music and support himself during the court battle. If Warne owns your name, your image, and your work product, they own you, in the same way the people owned slaves 300 years ago. This was Prince's legal argument although it took years to settle Prince was victorious legally. However, it came at a great cost to him. Warner black balled him on radio; he got no spins and no love, in addition they blocked distribution channels. That is why he had to sell new music at shows and through his 1-800-New-Funk phone line, and later online. As to his marriage to Mayte, who is a lovely person whom I've also met a few times, and the loss of their children, Prince never took time to grieve their loss. Emancipation had just been released and could afford to take time off as he was financially responsible for expenses that a label or a sponsor would normally cover. By this time musical taste had changed and Hip-Hop had taken over pop music; thus he was chasing hits, which never works. In addition I believe some mistakes were made in regard to what singles were being released. For example: Rave unto the Joy Fantastic featured many collaborations with known artists like Gwen, Stefani, Chuck D, and Cheryl Crow , but the only single that was released was The Greatest Romance that Never been Sold which is a great song. However, the version the version that was released was just a good song. Upon listening to the remixes, the could have released any one of them and had a better outcome. As rapper Eve has versus on a version, rapper Q-Tip has versus on another version, and there is a version that was remixed by The Neptunes. Here is the released version: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWWXmWmcgZ6mnbc Here is the version they should have released (Adam & Eve remix) kzbin.info/www/bejne/hKayaKR7epejZ9U

Sorry if I've missed some of your reactions to The Time. They are a great band to check out. In fact, I named my car "Stella," because in The Time song "Jerk Out," they sing, "This 'Stella' was bad to the bone."

I read somewhere that a major part of his image was to look exceptional 24/7, not just on stage. He even made his backup bands dress fancy off stage. We can judge him for his particular choices, but you can't deny he turned heads everywhere he went.

Always here for the Prince Content!!! ☮💜🎶 He changed his name to an unpronounceable symbol due to disputes with Warner Brothers saying they owned his name and likeness, not just his album masters, which is why he alternated vault tracks as "Prince" albums on Warner while he released "Artist" albums until finishing his contract. His accidental OD was post hip-surgery he had a private doctor giving him stuff so he could sleep through the discomfort.

I remember being about 14 years old and buying Prince's album 1999 at the BX or the base exchange at the Air Force Base I lived at in West Germany. It was a double album and I remember in the middle of it were Prince's eyes. I loved that album!

Prince choosing a symbol for his name was in direct protest to his treatment by the record executives and the music industry as a whole. They were trying to do the age old practices of commercializing and commodifying him while simultaneously stripping him of his agency regarding his own music. Iirc before he settled on the symbol he briefly went by "Slave" to show the record company that he knew that they were trying to do.

I love your reactions but you're talking through what he's saying. Learn baby learn. Prince was a beast. He became known as a symbol because he was trying to get out of his recording contract who owned his name. But they didn't own the love symbol. Eventually he got out of his contract.

Prince himself said in an interview that I read online that 'Purple Rain' was NOT based on his life and that it was just a story written by someone else that he acted in. That it was fiction and should be taken as such. Not really sure what to think except that I'll respect his wishes.

He said himself that when it came to someone explaining the birds and bees to him.His mother gave him some erotic literature instead. Which is probably why a lot of his music was very sexual.

I think when they said "accidental overdose", I heard that he took the wrong pills.Thinking there were something else that he was taking. So it was kind of like an accidental mix up which unfortunately cost him his life.

I think it was intentional. Prince had a percocet prescription because he was in need of hip surgery (high heels and lively stage shows). He didn’t get surgery because of his religion, so he was taking percocet for the pain. Someone switch his pills to fentanyl. He had 450 micrograms per kilogram in his liver, it only takes 69 micrograms to cause fatal toxicity.

@@triqid It wasn't intentional. It is well documented by those who knew him that he was getting pills on the black market to keep his condition out of the media, that's why those that knew him convinced him to see a specialist to get him off opiate addiction (it's a tragedy that the doctor arrived 4 hours too late) . Sadly, you can't be sure what are in illicit pills and, unfortunately, he took pills without knowing they were laced with fentanyl (this was pretty much at the very start of the US fentanyl pandemic).

10s of thousands of people died from the exact same thing in Minnesota around the time Prince passed…hydrocodone laced with fentanyl. It’s unfortunate for all the thousands of people that lost their lives. And it’s really unfortunate that Prince gets framed as a drug addict because of this even though he was very conscious about how he treated his body for the majority of his life and was just in a lot of pain.

Actually She didn't Miscarry their second child he just didn't live very long I think he only lived for about a week.. Because he had something wrong with hi. I don't remember what it was. I feel sorry 24:48 for both of them. That had to have been hard to lose both their children. And I can see where it would cause a rift between them.

That’s not accurate. Mayte has said in her book that they did have second miscarriage after they lost their son who they named Amiir, whom sadly passed at 6 days old due to a rare genetic disorder named Pfeifer Syndrome II. 😞

I remember the day he passed. I woke up and my boyfriend told me. We were both shocked. The news media tried to say he overdosed without any context. I didn't believe itt. Then later we found out that he'd been in a lot of pain because of wearing high heels for so many years and doing those crazyt moves, splits and all. He had (I heard this so maybe not true) hip replacement surgery. He needed painkillers because of this stuff so that's why he od'd. Another casualty of America's opiate scam. He was amazing. He's on the right and he comes last. He made them all look silly. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bISpf4pre51-b7s
