@dxgypsyful3 жыл бұрын
You may notice the overall sound quality is kinda high end and tinny. Lars (the drummer) had unresolved issues with the death of their bassist Cliff Burton and was notorious for taking it out on their new bassist Jason Newstead. During production Lars told the engineer to turn the bass down in the mix to an almost inaudible level. The album, while classic and incredible, suffered in overall quality by not having any bottom end or low from bass. You can search for this song (and album) remixed to include bass and it's skull crushing. It's called And Justice For Jason.
@TheBlackQueen3 жыл бұрын
At the same time, I think the lack of bass really gave the album a Progressive-sounding edge to it. Something just hits different and it feels more like a cold hard slap of reality. With less low end, harsher distorted guitars, and thin click-like drums, it managed to put more emphasis on the words being spoken.

I remember helping tar my friends roof to earn the money to buy this cassette. We sat on my porch popped in this cassette in Blackened came on. That was back in the day when you listened to a cassette from beginning to end and didn’t just fast forward it to the favorite song you heard on the radio. Probably the single most unexpected musical experience I ever had. In my opinion, The best song Metallica ever made! And that’s saying a lot! Absolutely love your reaction! That’s exactly what my reaction was. That’s my reaction every time I hear this song. Unfortunately after this album Metallica started to go downhill. I can’t even listen to anything that they’ve made after this album. They are even better live🤘🏽🤘🏽

This was the song they previewed from the album when they did the Monsters of Rock tour before this album dropped. They ripped into this and said to my friends that were with me if the whole album, is like this we are in for one hell of a record. I wasn't disappointed at all. Still one of my favorite Metallica albums this was them at their absolute most angry. A lot of frustration at Cliff dying came out on this record. I think they shot their load as far as song writing went , because they never really wrote like this again ,at least not consistently . There'd be flashes here and there.

Sometimes a song comes along with lyrics that get ever more relevant despite all your wishes that they won't apply anymore and will become dated. This is one of them.

If you notice, in every genre of 80s, the looming possibility of nuclear Armageddon was high and worked its way into the lyrics, be it this, 1999 or 99 Luftballons. It was a spooky time to be aware of this. I was overseas on a carrier when this was released in 1988! This was ‘tallica at its most ‘Prog’, like Rush! After this would be the self-titled ‘black album’, (Sandman, Sad/True Unforgiv). $5.98 EP aside this is the band’s first without Cliff Burton. Fourth album in and the band finally agrees to a video for MTV. To become that massive, without the aid of radio or video, just fans alone. Zero social media, aside from monthly fan-made, underground metal magazines.
