I worked in a restaurant with another big Metallica fan when this album came out, we went out and bought it before work and then proceeded to blast it in the kitchen every day for months. Crazy to think it's been almost 14 years.

I was on a flight to Hawaii the day this album came out. I could hardly wait to land and hit the record store. I was meeting my best friend and fellow metallican. I got there, went and bought 2 of them. He would not be there for a few more hrs. Plan was to hear it together for the first time. Man, that was the longes few hrs. Needles to say we were cruising around the island blasting shit nobody had ever heard in the mustang with the top down. Awesome time and will never forget that day.🤘

This album, Death Magnetic, is highly underrated in my opinion. Yes, the production value is a bit off but in the end, it delivers a hard and epic sound. If you listen to the entire album in one sitting, you WILL BE exhausted by the end. So much energy, so much Metallica in each song. Love it.

Underrated song from an underrated album (Death Magnetic.) Some of my favorite Metallica songs are on that album including this song; Broken, Beaten and Scarred, and Unforgiven 3 which IMHO is the best of the 3 Unforgiven songs. Thanks for sharing, and for all that you do for all of us! ~Be Blessed

They record nearly everything they do. Every riff, every jam session. Especially when they're touring the world. Those moments of inspiration, no matter how small, can lead to great music. While not virtuosos, they have an incredible gift for composition and editing. Working parts together for maximum effect in a song will take it from a nice track to an absolute anthem. That level of dedication is why they're where they are now in their late 50's, almost 60.

As a long term fan that places Death Magnetic quite high, that was just your life - now that twin guitar sound - that’s Metallica core sound with strong finger playing bass....& Lars. 8 & 1/2 ( this is the half) great songs. The other one is unforgivable.
@snakeinthegrass74432 жыл бұрын
Sorry J, I can't help you out with that one. Been listening to classic rock since right around the time you were born and I still have no idea how musicians put songs like this together. Its definitely given Metallica their longevity that few have mastered. Great reaction as always. Peace, brother ✌🏼✌🏼
@kilogmatt2 жыл бұрын
They're not very similar but only two bands that I know of do this for me; Metallica and Steely Dan. Both just delight me on how they put together songs. Some may be tempted to suggest me some prog rock because a lot of effort goes into transitioning/different segments too but no that's not what I'm talking about.

If you're really interested in how Metallica work in creating music, they are probably one of the most documented bands. Check out the "A Year and a Half in the Life Of" DVD that is about the making of the black album to start. There is also "Metallica: Some Kind of Monster" about the making of St. Anger and the near ending of the band. I believe they also have clips on KZbin showing them in the studio working through riffs and discussing the creation of songs.
@phillipkeene9582 жыл бұрын
Jamal. Look up A year in the life Metallica and react to it. Hell, react to Some Kind of Monster. It's St Anger era but it's amazing doc on the state of the band in early 2000's. It shows how they work in the studio. There's plenty of vids from their most recent album Hardwired also. Keep it up though. The more you look into them you'll learn you like more and more of their music.

Metallica has a simple but great formula for creating many of their songs. It usually starts with a guitar riff. James and Kirk are always thinking of riffs on their own time that they think sound good. They will record them so they don’t forget and then bring them into the studio when it’s time to make the next album. They might Frankenstein riffs together to make an intro, outro, or bridge. They will then build off of that adding guitar solos, interludes, and tinkering with the song structure. Sometimes the bassist will contribute a riff, too.

@aliwantizu2 жыл бұрын
The video doesn't really match the lyrics. The lyrics are about abusive domestic relationships. The director of the music video wanted to apply it to a war setting featuring strangers in a tense situation. It's a good video, and a great song, but many have argued that the video doesn't necessarily enhance the lyrical content. YMMV.

METALLICA: There are NONE HIGHER! Them, Rush, and Tool, are my three favorites because they are EXACTLY the same, but sound NOTHING alike. Musicianship, tightness OMG they were tight on that one, quality performance, the shows match perfectly with the songs, never too much just always enough, lights sound, player/audience interaction. Just perfectly amazing how much fun it is to see them “PLAY LIVE” and say to everyone, “Yeah, they play it like its supposed to be played and it sounds like it’s supposed to sound.🤘🖖✌️🎸🎸🥁🎤👌👍🥇

Jamel, If you're interested in another band that's a whole 'nother animal live, check out Gov't Mule. Fantastic live band! Fair warning, though: that's a deep DEEP rabbit hole to fall into, lol. One must see, is their cover of Fleetwood's Gold Dust Woman, featuring Grace Potter, live at Mountain Jam. Never thought I'd hear a man covering a Stevie Nicks song- but here it is, and they do it real justice. Another would be a cover of Marshall Tucker's "Can't You See" with Charlie Starr. (of Blackberry Smoke- another killer live act) They have a huge catalog of originals, too. They just love playing covers live- and making them theirs.

This is a massively great song, with such a heavy heart in there. But it is not a whole. The song, musically, consists of many brilliant parts that have been put together, some of them well (Queen quality well, they often assembled their songs from bits and riffs) and some awfully bad. Still a 7/10 song, because of the 10/10 bits in it.
