These guys have an incredible discography spanning over 30 years! This medley comprises parts of their better jams from the late 90's/the early 2000s. They have an extensive back catalog I recommend you get into - at least until 2002 or so, IMO. They took a page after prog giants like Rush or Yes and took it out for a spin, filtering basically every genre of music through their own unique lens.

Everything after Six Degrees = blahhhhhhhhh
@bloodnchocolate5 жыл бұрын
@@thedanantenna yeah. Train of Though was a big drop in quality, IMO. Everything onwards was just rehashing with some good moments interspersed between (like the Count of Tuscany). Their descent into the metal rabbit hole and, not having Myung contributing lyrics, the lack of Kevin Moore (sorry, Jordan), LaBrie's deteriorating voice, Portnoy leaving and their hewing too close to their own conventions put the band in a rut they haven't been able to get out of. I'll always love them, though.
@bloodnchocolate5 жыл бұрын
And of course my top 2 records by them are Awake and Images and Words, with Scenes from a Memory a close third -- emotional resonance and lyrical content beat endless prog riffage any day of the week. That's why Rush will always be the superior band.

The freaking Allstar-Band of progressive metal. Well, forget progressive metal. The freaking Allstar-Band of music. For me, a lot of songs sound to much like a "show off" of their skills. If you listen to one of their albums in one session i was often like "Yeaah... i got it.... you are unbelievable gifted and skilled playing your instrument... oh another solo, meh." Well, i love progressive metal (for me: tool, e perfect circle, pain of salvation ...), but these guys are jamming and improvising their art... sometimes a lot of their songs just annoy me in the same way Jazzmusic is doing it. Not because its bad, but this instrumental jamming... donno, i am not a fan, i think i prefer their more meldic and "mainstreamer" songs with a more classic song structure, my luck they produced some of those aswell.

The only positive from the pandemic is all the great music being put together while so many of these guys with home studios are able to work. Petruccis solo record, Terminal Velocity (with Mike Portnoy on drums) is fantastic, along with a 3rd Liquid Tension Experiment album and more Neal Morse.
