I saw these guys live in Stockholm in 2005. Mike Portnoy, the drummer, had some kind of problem with his lungs, so the show only lasted about 3 hours...

@Jacques Malan Petrucci only enters full Killzone Mode when the show goes over 4 hours. That one show where they did two full sets PLUS the entire Master of Puppets, well, let's just say it was touch and go.

I don't think there's been a more talented group of rock musicians collectively, ever. The required musical memory, coupled with the insane timing challenges, and just sheer inventive imagination of these guys, blow me away every time I watch them play. Glad more people are appreciating these guys. Kudos!

These guys have an incredible discography spanning over 30 years! This medley comprises parts of their better jams from the late 90's/the early 2000s. They have an extensive back catalog I recommend you get into - at least until 2002 or so, IMO. They took a page after prog giants like Rush or Yes and took it out for a spin, filtering basically every genre of music through their own unique lens.

@bloodnchocolate
@bloodnchocolate 5 жыл бұрын
@@thedanantenna yeah. Train of Though was a big drop in quality, IMO. Everything onwards was just rehashing with some good moments interspersed between (like the Count of Tuscany). Their descent into the metal rabbit hole and, not having Myung contributing lyrics, the lack of Kevin Moore (sorry, Jordan), LaBrie's deteriorating voice, Portnoy leaving and their hewing too close to their own conventions put the band in a rut they haven't been able to get out of. I'll always love them, though.
@bloodnchocolate
@bloodnchocolate 5 жыл бұрын
And of course my top 2 records by them are Awake and Images and Words, with Scenes from a Memory a close third -- emotional resonance and lyrical content beat endless prog riffage any day of the week. That's why Rush will always be the superior band.

They're (Well, Mike and the Johns) professionally trained through Berkely (I think as jazz musicians originally). They've done some really impressive stuff. "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance" is probably my favorite long-form symphonic tune they did (including with an actual orchestra on the Score live album). Really good stuff with great musicianship and real emotional heft.

Jumped straight into the deep end with Dream Theater. This is a mash-up of some of their craziest instrumental passages from various songs. Basically a "show-off" piece. You'll see lots of varied opinions about them, whether their singer can sing, whether they can "white a song", etc., but one thing nobody can argue against is their instrumental prowess. They have an extremely varied catalog to explore, with tons of great songs, IMO.

The freaking Allstar-Band of progressive metal. Well, forget progressive metal. The freaking Allstar-Band of music. For me, a lot of songs sound to much like a "show off" of their skills. If you listen to one of their albums in one session i was often like "Yeaah... i got it.... you are unbelievable gifted and skilled playing your instrument... oh another solo, meh." Well, i love progressive metal (for me: tool, e perfect circle, pain of salvation ...), but these guys are jamming and improvising their art... sometimes a lot of their songs just annoy me in the same way Jazzmusic is doing it. Not because its bad, but this instrumental jamming... donno, i am not a fan, i think i prefer their more meldic and "mainstreamer" songs with a more classic song structure, my luck they produced some of those aswell.

Saw DT for the first time in 1998 on the Falling Into Infinity Tour and about 10 times since then, just unbelievable musicianship from them and they never disappoint live. The only positive from the pandemic is all the great music being put together while so many of these guys with home studios are able to work. Petruccis solo record, Terminal Velocity (with Mike Portnoy on drums) is fantastic, along with a 3rd Liquid Tension Experiment album and more Neal Morse. DT and all the various side projects are one of the things that makes Prog such a great genre to me, with so many willing to try new things and work with new people.

All you’d see on the right would be a pair of shoes in the air because he fell out of the chair. That’s usually my reaction to Octavarium anyway. 👀

I feel that amid the guitar mastery of Petrucci, the keyboard wizardry of Rudess and the drum insanity of Portnoy, John Myung usually gets unfairly overlooked. Guy is a BEAST!

Back then when I was a child the only song that I knew from them is The spirit carries on, from the Metropolis pt.2 album, I didn't know they have all those crazy progressive metal songs, and until about 5 years ago I dive deeper into the songs and I never want to get out, it's like heaven down there...

So glad I'm not the only one who thought 'this is video game music' with your sonic the hedgehog question, because yes, this is vg boss music all over and I am here for it. I want a whole video game OST from them.

This is what we call in the musicians musicians world the best of the best. DT made ProgMetal what it is today, and there is a whole lot of amazing Prog out there now. They have been doing this since 1989 and they haven't slowed down a bit.
