@Steve Wilkins Definitely. Chuck Berry's "Roll Over Beethoven" says "move over classical, rock and roll is the new hotness" E.L.O.'s "Roll Over Beethoven" is a reminder Beethoven was a-rockin' and a-rollin' more than a century before Berry was even born. Taking the best of both styles and putting them together in a single song, and getting a "strange magic" indeed out of the result.

This compilation is a real masterpiece--starting out with Beethoven's Ninth, mix in the style of other kings of rock and roll from the fifties--the Little Richard "wooos" (good catch) and Jerry Lee Lewis's manic piano and throw in "Blue Suede Shoes" to reference Elvis and Carl. Around this time in the seventies there were several bands that did fifties/sixties rock and roll medleys, most based around this song and the other Chuck Berry classic, "Johnny B. Goode" (check out Uriah Heep's on their live album) but ELO's is the most creative overall. Jamel you really need to do some Chuck Berry--he put the baby rock and roll on the radio map. "Maybellene" is another great one. Jerry Lee too if you haven't already.

Chuck Berry wrote and released the song in 1956 The Beatles covered it on their second LP in 1963. E.L.O. covered it in their second LP in 1973. The original was written and recorded by Chuck Berry in 1956. It's a classic example of the rockabilly sound that Berry helped define. The Beatles were all huge Berry fans, and covered the tune in 1963. The ELO version came 10 years later, in 1973. ELO's distinctive sound was predicated on incorporating classical music elements with rock and roll, so their version of the song starts with an orchestral rendering of the opening of Beethoven's 5th symphony, and many of the interludes incorporate orchestral instruments and classically inspired chord progressions.

From Beethoven 5th Symphony written between 1804 and 1808. Everything about this ELO rendition from Chuck rhytmic song variation is epic but vocal performance is out of this world. Guitar parts are very close to what Chuck did. All geniuses. Thank you.

Your face was priceless a few times in this video. The best was when it switched from Beethoven in the beginning to rock. Your expression made my day.

Kevin Murphy 1 second ago I've been consider this from time to time over my lifetime of loving rock music...I believe "Roll Over..." is the greatest rock song ever. The quintessential rock n roll classic-every other GREAT rock song jumps off from. It's so solid, Chuck Berry revealed it and launched a music genre, The Beatles (arguably the greatest rock band) elevated the masterpiece...and ELO electrified it and expanded it to meteoric stature. A great song that got BETTER.

The story is that a critic commenting on Chuck Berry’s music said, “Beethoven must be rolling over in his grave.” Chuck Berry’s response was writing this song.

I literally LOL at your expression when that guitar kicked in at the beginning.
