+JAYKEEOUT I think the area and locale matters a lot. Co-Ex is a pretty bougie neighborhood in Korea. I think it's fair to suggest that economic differences lead to differential outcomes in speaking English for Koreans. If you have better access to education you probably speak better. I wonder if people in areas like Jeju Island or even like Daejeon or Busan would speak equal levels of English as do people in Apgujeongdong or Chungdamdong

+noah9100 Actually Korean can speak English but most of old Korean can't speak English well compare to with young people because when they learned English they focused to memorized grammar and vocabulary. they had less opportunity to develop their speaking skills than young Korean.

Koreans are super friendly and polite so I'm not saying this to take away from that, but a big part of the reason a lot of them offered to walk him there is because trying to explain complex directions in English was too difficult for some. It was just easier to walk him there.

See, this is a good social experiment. Entertaining, funny, actually teaches you a little bit (everyone commenting how Koreans seem nice) and still respectful and ethical - not outright offensive like that Muslim vs Christian extremism prank. Thank you, I actually learnt that "social experiments" can be good to watch. EDIT I am not saying anything about Muslims or Christians at all, I am commenting on how much better this video is than a certain video comparing and disrespecting both the Muslim and Christian religions. No offense meant to anyone.

@MrJpaul87

@mkchung9599
@mkchung9599 7 жыл бұрын

I not from an english speaking country but I can actually speak english. I even joined an english debate contests. But whenever I talk to a real english speaker I get nervous and shy. I'm scared that I might screw my grammar and I might not be able to talk as fast as them. and the conversations would become so awkward. That's why I don't like to start a conversation with foreigners.

Korean people are lovely! I went to Seoul last summer, and everybody offered us help when we were looking at the subway map, even If we didn't ask for help xD People aproach to us, and speak to us in English "Do you guys need help? Where are you going?" and even If we know where to go, they try to help us more, and a lot of times they take us to the correct platform in the subway and wait with us for the train to come to be sure that we don't get lost, so cute!! Also I was so lost looking for my hotel without GPS, so I ask in my poor korean to a guy in his store. The lovely man CLOSED his store and take me walking to my hotel!!! Honestly, from what i've observed, most Koreans are so helpful. I went to seoul 2 yrs ago and saw it myself. If you're lost you can just randomly ask them for directions, and they would actually help you. Sometimes, they would even walk or guide you to the right direction. Some would actually speak to you in Korean with hand gestures and try their best for you to understand what theyre trying to say despite the language barrier. 😭❤️

I currently live in Korea and can vouch that most Koreans will help you regardless of whether or not they speak english. Usually they actually want to talk to a foreigner in English because they want to practice it. If they don't speak it, usually they will try to use body language to help me, or direct me to a worker, or friend who speaks it. They're very nice people :)

@seoyounchang3968

+BigLizMac actually Koreans tend to be better at English because the education system pushes English education more on children. For instance, Japan puts less emphasis on learning English as a foreign language, so the students tend to be poorer English users. Your example with coffee being pronounced kuppi in Korean would be pronounced as kohee and you tell me which is easier to understand. As with Chinese students, the socioeconomic class of the student dictates their fluency with English because China is technically in a developing stage. Older generations will not necessarily have had the opportunity to learn English and younger generations have opportunity depending on background.
@seoyounchang3968
@seoyounchang3968 8 жыл бұрын
+BigLizMac it's really a matter of historical need. Japan doesn't have to push English as heavily as Korea because it's post war reconstruction period was not as heavily transformative as korea's. Korean education pushed English because it needed western allies to put pressure on Japan and China to stop bullying Korea into unfavorable political policies. This can be the mentality in a lot of parents pushing English education on their children. A large amount of my friends in Korea are completely fluent in English with good accent because of how heavily their parents pushed them to study hard and use the knowledge to help the country
@seoyounchang3968
@seoyounchang3968 8 жыл бұрын
Again, I really have to assert that it isn't a "nationwide thing" for Chinese and Japanese thing either so I really don't see your point. Additionally as an expat, I really have doubts about your "nationwide" experience with both Chinese and Japanese nor the cultural intimacy you share with East Asians in general.

I went to Tokyo and I tried to speak English looking for places or asking about this and that (but it was for real lol not an experiment) and it was about 50:50, like taxi drivers normally can speak a few words, information desks usually can speak very well, shop attendance also can speak well... but like, normal people, or security staff I met, they can't really respond, even when I'm at popular tourism spots. I gave up speaking English after a while and just asked around in Japanese with how little vocabulary I have T_T but I know ZERO Korean so I'm a bit reluctant to visit it....

***** I think I know what they feel,, it's probably the same difficulty I find when I attempt to pronounce Korean words haha! Japanese pronunciation is easy for me, I'm Indonesian and our pronunciation are the same (with exception for the letter L). But Korean is too different T_T

Aswin A Are you ok? Mostly ppl in local market is old people or young ppl with less education, and they're don't have interesting or they don't need to know English to sells veggie, meat or fish!!! Mostly of them can say "hi,goodbye,good,no,yes,best,etc.." I see nothing wrong, you cant express everybody can speak English special for these people who don't have nothing to worry about speak for their whole life!

22 Pandas I never said it is wrong not to speak English. I just think it would be better for this experiment if he seeks the average Korean person to speak English to. And I think the average Korean person doesn't hang out in (fancy) malls. If he goes to the market he will meet everyday people.

So based on this video, not only are koreans able to successfully and efficiently communicate in english, but they are also very kind and helpful. I love how some of them were willing to walk you to the place you wanted to get to. If you were to do that experiment here in America, you would probably get mugged

you should note that English is an international language and the most important thing that everyone in the world should know and speak it well in order to comunicate with foreigners or people who are not originally from your own country
@artg3ne

Hoàng Lâm Võ but that shouldn't be the case. English isn't the #1 language in the world. don't force anyone to learn English bc someone else can't understand what another individual is saying. English is also the most difficult language to learn for non-speakers. A lot of slang, and so many unnecessary words. Some English speakers need to open their minds and try and learn other languages instead of forcing foreigners to learn it.

onnolee at the very least, everyone(eg.non-native English speakers) should know the basics of English in case they are asked to help a foreign or they go to another country whose official language is not English. English is taught almost all parts of the world cuz you know, it's an international language. I do not force everyone to speak English well or fluently, i just recommend them to learn and know it first things first before learning another language

As an American on of our biggest tropes in the movies is that all Asians look alike. Which we Asian Americans always blown off as the ignorance of America. I was stationed in Korea with no Korean blood in me (I'm part Chinese, Japanese, Filipino but mainly from Guam) and I was surprised at all the Koreans coming at me thinking I was Korean.

Like how he told them that they didn't need to walk him to the place he was looking for ... a lot of people did that to me too! Whenever we got lost in Korea, the locals would assist us in the same way. They're really kind. One guy found out we were on the wrong subway and he escorted us to all the right connections (he was going the same way) and he even got us seats during rush hour. He was also crazy drunk and scolded my mom for only having one child, which was hilarious. Favorite part of my trip. XD
