COLDEST WEEKEND EVER AT THE CABIN. 3 DAYS OF FROZEN

This is the coldest weekend ever at the cabin. The winds are in the 50's. Everything is frozen. My snowmobile won't start. My truck gets stuck in deep, rock hard snow, and my drill gets fried. But, it's all amazing. One of the best trips ever at the cabin. My sleeping bag is warm, I catch an incredible fish, and I eat amazing food. It's an adventure I'll never forget.

Jay, get some chains for those tires. Honestly I'm shocked you have made it back and forth before without any issues. - If you can't get chains, get some proper snow tires on that truck.

Air down your tires, turn off traction control, keep three or four bags of cinders/sand in the back, put chains on early, always park facing towards your escape/exit route, forget traction boards/other traction stuff, and have a good recovery rope (not a tow strap), consider a set of studded snow tires all around, and be able to winch out to a snow anchor (that means a winch on the truck and an extra battery in the engine bay). Sounds like sage advice Bob! Arctic conditions have been occurring western coastal PNW way too often for my taste in the last 5 years I’d say. Before that we had winters without snow more often than not. California it’s not but I’m starting to feel more like a part of the great white north that’s for sure. I love Jay, he’s upbeat, articulate and just all around humble. Thanks for giving him your best tips😎

Do I see all-weather tires on your truck? How s____d, if you ask me...and then no chains? Again, how s____d, my friend, if you don't get too mad at me! Living where you live, you should be prepared for this.

While I am offering advice not asked for, use a top down fire start, not bottom up. Clean out the fireplace before you leave the cabin, stock the wood on the porch to max, split more kindling that you will ever use, bring in a full wood load out inside the cabin to stay dry, to be ready next trip, set the bottom logs with top kindling before you leave, and have a propane or MAP gas torch to use to start the fire when you first get to the cabin. Consider building a small shelter for the snow machine next to the generator and run the Honda's exhaust with flex pipe from the gen shed to the snow machine shed. Bury a ten gauge extension cord from the gen shed to the snow machine shed (and run one from the shed to the cabin while you are at it this summer) - best to land on a breaker box. A wall mounted vented propane heater will jump start the cabin heat up from the low temps, even fifteen minutes really helps. Now #1 idea is to build an airlock entry to save interior heat. Never open both entry doors at once, and consider why native cultures use a small entrance door often with the entry/threshold lower than the interior floor. Add more thermal mass to your wood stove/heater - even bricks are better than nothing but I like cast iron or if you have a friend in the trenching business, get some cut up trench plate for a close to the stove surround. Insulate the floor under the stove with the dense rockwool sheets and top it with large soapstone slabs. A 6" or 8" insulated round duct run from the peak of the ceiling strait down to a nice place to sit with a reversing fan inside the pipe will bring hot air from the loft to the lower floor area. What else? I want a cabin like yours but in the Caribbean or maybe Baja California. Bob in Nevada

I saw a t.v. programme, where somebody put left over food scraps outside, in a bin, and they smellt it - so a) they sensed there was food there - and b) someone who had it! The person went out as usual, before dark for a walk - and got attacked by waiting wolves. They hunt (at least) in pairs and one will HURT AND DISABLE DISABLE someone, by going for their LEGS, so they can't get away. While another ones is "free" to go for the face of the person, who is already preoccupied with protecting his or her legs!
