I grew up in Cornwall; I was still in single digits in the 1960's. My dad had a local garage, services provided included fuel, repairs, taxi service, wedding and funeral vehicles. He had a couple of old Austin Hearses and a 1936 Rolls Royce, which he had found under a dustsheet on a local farm; a real barn find. Part of his job was that if a holiday maker died on holiday, he would repatriate the bodies to their home. I went with him on one such trip in the Rolls. Through all the winding and bendy lanes of Cornwall, we were being tailgated by some bloke in a mark one Ford Cortina who seemed to be in a bit of a hurry. He overtook us when we hit some dual carriageway, but you should have seen his face when we sailed past him at 100mph shortly afterwards. I spent hours playing in that Rolls as a kid; and appreciated the bodywork, leather and the wood even then. Great memories. (Rolls Royce's do not break down; they simply fail to proceed.)

Hey Jay, Always loved Rollers. One July Sunday morning 1978, me and the fam are comin' back from the market when the wife says "THERES A ROLLS ROYCE and they look like their in trouble". This was one of those oil trouble times and there were NO service stations open for miles. We went back and it turns out the the car had a flat tire. This car was one of those great old early thirties grand touring cars for the lords and ladies. The owner had a spare but no jack and being 1978 no cell service either. I told the guy I would be right back and bring a jack. Me and the boy ( 4 years old) came back, helped him with the tire change and then he told me and my son to get in and he took us for a ride and left his three passengers at the side of the road in the sweltering heat. How cool was that? We were gone for about ten minutes and then returned to retrieve the strandee's. Great adventure. regards, Giovanni

Not so much but still "adequate"! The 3 series , like this one, brings the most money but, I prefer the 1s and 2s with the single headlight and taller radiator. I had a 59 Cloud I I drove all over the east coast on interstates. Even 80 MPH with no problems. Every part on these cars is reparable. You need new shocks? You remove them and rebuild them! Funny Rolls Royce story. A friend of mine when I was very young had the Cat dealership on the Darling Downs of Queensland. When he was an apprentice Hastings Deering sent him out to a sheep station in Western Queensland. Guy picked him up at the air port in a Rolls, a really old rolls with a million miles on the clock. That was his farm ute. Had to shift some rabbit traps off the front seat and throw them into the back seat on which sat a sheep that had been half eaten by a Dingo. Turns out that the guy was the station owner. He bought the Rolls because it was the most reliable vehicle he could get and he was a days drive from the nearest mechanic. He could afford a Rolls because Australia as the saying goes was riding on the sheep's back. Wool was a pound a pound and Oz supplied the world with high quality fleece. Sheep farmers were the oil tycoons of the day.

The version my father told me was the owner was being interviewed about his new Rolls and was asked what the best feature was - he said it was the glass partition behind the front seats. Why, he was asked? It stops the sheep licking my neck as i drive along......

@@alexbrown1995 I liked the one about the Irishman given a lift in a Rolls. He found two golf tees on the front seat and asked the owner what they were for, to which the reply was "You put your balls on those when driving off". "Begorrah!" he replied "those people at Rolls Royce think of everything!

what in the world is a "sheep station" ?
@philbox45663 жыл бұрын
@@jameschiles872 A sheep station is Australian for a gigantic plot of dirt what ya run sheep around. Think of a farm as big as England and you'll come close. Typically these big blocks are way out in the back of beyond past the black stump. They are so big that to get around you hop in a helicopter and wait for the earth to turn to get to the other side of the farm. The kids learn to drive at an early age cost the parents get sick of driving them two hours to the front gate to catch the bus to school. True story.

Ahh, Wedding Cars. Had the pleasure of driving multiple Weddings in the different Cloud iterations, both V8 and Straight 6 - the slight lag when this one started is very familiar. And yes, the Sixes are extremely smooth. Having taken one of the IIIs out for an extended ride on an Interstate, I'd say the upper limit of comfortable speed is more like 80 - cannot imagine trying to take one anywhere close to 100. The ride is so comfortable, that close attention to the speedometer was needed, simply for the lack of feeling of speed via the feel. A unique driving experience. The term 'adequate' is certainly a bit of British understatement.

There are wonderful Roddy McDowell home movies, (Soapbox Productions, KZbin) taken in Malibu, Summer 1965, that show both this SC3, and a silver one, purchased by director George Cukor. He gifted it to himself after his over-due Oscar win for "My Fair Lady " Hedda Hopper gave her navy blue Silver Cloud to Lucille Ball, after her passing in 1966. I use to see Loretta Young, driving around in her black plate, sand over sable SCIII. Use to see Ceasar Romero in one, as well.

A V8 engine is more smooth than a 6 cylinder by a country mile. Hence why Rolls developed their own V8. It effectively meant the car could more efficiently derive its power with so little effort. A 6 cylinder is far smoother than a 4 cylinder and was the happy medium for many european cars. Where I think 6 cylinder really comes in on its own is in sports cars.

It awoke the landed English Gentry in this little boy and I have loved them ever since. Thank you for making my week!

I remember, I was 14 or so as a Boy Scout on a hike in Scotland (I’m from Brussels, Belgium) back in the mid 70’s, really in the middle of nowhere walking with say 3 others on a little road, when this big car comes. So we lifted our thumb to hitch a hike. It was a Rolls Royce with a big nose. Not sure if it was that exact model, but it definitively was a Rolls. Unbelievably, the guy stopped! He wasn’t that old, dressed casually, something like a gentleman farmer, and he drove us to the next town! He spoke French quite decently. The only single moment in my life I sat in a Rolls. True story! Btw « the flying lady » as you call it, is actually named « Spirit of Ecstasy ».
