It's mostly a matter of safety. Chrome bumpers (as gorgeous as they are on certain cars, such as the Dino) do not provide the much better crash absorption capability of alternative materials and associated design elements. Then there's the weight/cost factor: Customers now want better mileage, hence the need to shed as much weight as possible; and chrome is expensive to produce.

Tom That’s a racing car, not a road car. The Dino is beautiful partly because it doesn’t try to be a 330 p3. It tries to be the humble brother of the mid engine super cars of its day, delivering remarkably mediocre performance in exchange for the driving experience and not being so spectacularly rare or unreliable you’d have to purchase a second of these cars just for parts.

Actually, it was a good performer at the time ! Remember that Ferrari was in a tight financial slump. They needed an entry level, more affordable car in large volumes to make money. After being bought by Fiat (Agnelli), they cut a deal to mass produce (Fiat) a V6 but with exclusive heads and internal for the Ferrari more powerful version and detuned versions for Fiat models, all to cut costs. The interior was in vinyl too, no leather. Enzo hated the idea of a mid-engined, transverse design V6 car. So he charged his son to make it happened, but always refused to call it a proper Ferrari, not to upset his traditionnal, snobby clients, thus the name Dino.

The Headlight covers were an optional extra (also the front badgebar) in the UK, I think I am right is saying they were not allowed in the USA, also the front indicators are normaly slanted but again for the US regulations they were modified to be "upright".

I love the way Jay incessantly interrupts his guests, but not always verbally, but sometimes with the revving of the engines, letting them know one thing for sure... Clay Loomis I think he means that Jay started the revving before he finished his sentence. Yeah, he managed to finish his sentence, but the revving was started before he finished, and it was enough to totally change the expression on Lee's face. To me, it was a funny moment, and I'm glad he pointed it out. And there's a difference in being interrupted and being intimidated...you're mixing apples and oranges, and that's not what the guy said. Also, I would imagine that most anyone who subscribes to Leno's Garage is aware of Mr. Lee's collection of cars, and his good relationship with Jay. And if you're gonna talk about things that everyone already knows about, then it's for sure that people already know about Jay's habit of interrupting people...as it's been talked about in these comment sections many times! bye bye

I love this car! Not all restomods are created equally. This one is spectacular. The modifications are all tasteful, and they're improvements on an already beautiful car. The headlight covers are perfect. The wheels are perfect. The body work is perfect. And who wouldn't want an F40 engine in their Dino?! In its day the vehicle wanted to compete against the 911S. But when you drove over railroad tracks you knew the Porsche was better built unfortunately. The sexiest Ferrari ever in my opinion. I was blessed to have a 1970 911S which i had up to about 140 . The owner before me said he had it up to 159. Porsche there is no substitute. Remember we are talking about a 2.2 liter engine. This was my second Porsche in 1973.

I can still remember having a wee semi race with a new yellow Dino through the hills outside Melbourne back in the day, with myself driving my Triumph TR-4. I got owned of course, but the sight of that Dino ahead of me was one of the best days of my life. The Dino has always been for me the prettiest model they ever made...styling perfection that is up there with the E-Type Jag and perhaps exceeds it. This recreation is just superb, a marvel of good taste and Ferrari wonderment. If only I had the money...

A nice old classic,beautifully upgraded and very desirable. I remember the episode when D.Lee mentioned he was getting this thing designed and built in England and would be ready sometime next year. If I recall it was the F40 drive episode. This modded Dino is now the rival of the Singer Porsche 911.I presume the price is also stratospheric? Jay....would you please give us one decent look at the dashboard? Almost every episode you barely even show the dash or interior. The Dino 246 had a cool set of Veglia instruments(as you noted)....but we don't get to see them! David Lee...you rock.

I can't help but keep coming back to this video, as this car is incredible. David has some wonderful cars, but this one is something else. A car as beautiful as the Dino 246gt, but with an incredible transformation giving modern performance and roadholding. Not that there's anything wrong with that original jewel of a V6 engine, the performance by modern standards are not great. I love the way they haven't messed around too much with the body either, because let's face it, it's just about perfect as is, but I do like the clear panel in the engine cover, showing off the induction trumpets, and the original design of wheel, but in a bigger size really finishes off the car too. Stunning.

It's obvious that no expense was spared in this build......hopefully it gets driven and not locked away.....
