@moogle68 Жыл бұрын
@@roberthirzel8385 If you listen to that part again you will notice that Jay does not reply to that statement and leaves a short gap of silence before the guest either: A - realized what he said was just wrong, since most enthusiasts know that the Miura claimed that title, or, B - realized that Jay was politely disagreeing with something he said, and he decided to wrap up that thought so they could continue on to the show's customary outro (which he could tell Jay was trying to get to by then) The guy seemed really well versed in car culture, so I was surprised to hear him say that as well. He said multiple things I hadn't heard in either Doug DeMuro nor Top Gear's video review's on the 959, and he was well spoken to boot (didn't stutter, use awkward pauses, or speak in a slow/muffled way), which means he's either REALLY confident or just *very* familiar with the info.

Trent , if you want to see 959s, come to Scott’s Valley, CA where Bruce Canepa’s shop started the 959 federalization program. He did Bill Gates’ 9959 among countless others. I’m lucky, it’s 2 mi from my house and I’ve seen 959 Sports in the Taco Bell drive-thru! Canepa’s open house tours are marvels, and I have pics of four 959s being serviced in one shot. Our community newspaper had a shot of 11(!!) 959s waiting to be federalizedby Canepa’s shop some years back. All that said, my head cranks around whenever I am lucky enough to see one of these very special street Porsches go by. Final question: when will Porsche reproduce this accomplishment? A car between the $200k 992 Turbo S and the million $ 918? That could be the “new” 959. Gas turbine hybrid?

Porsche later offered a factory upgrade that pushed horsepower to 580 horsepower and the top speed to over 210 mph. Completely irrelevant but a quick and dirty Google search shows that Alex Grappo is about 30 years old & change with some involvement w/ tech startups. Very slim chance those were funded with cash buyouts for him, nor an online coffee business will give you enough $$ to purchase/import a $1m-$2m plus car. More than likely there is a connection with his dad?, Gary A. Grappo, who served as U.S. Ambassador to Oman and other high level gov. roles in Saudi Arabia. My $1 bet is that the car was gifted to his dad for his service to the Royal family. Does not change the fact that Alex is an avid car enthusiast, nor the fact that he is sharing it with us in this capacity. Super appreciated. Still A++.

That prase quickly changed to "a prueba de bobos, pero no de Borbones" (fool proof, but no Borbon-proof) when the then-king of Spain Juan Carlos de Borbón managed to crash his 959 in a smooth corner at low speed. Funny story. When on a Porsche club tour day at Porsche-Stuttgart, they brought us to the R& D center. In one test area, they were running a 24 hour test of a Cayenne Turbo engine inside a sound insulated test-room environment. The Technician operating the test had just got up from the control panel and left to get a coffee while the Director and tour guide, a man in his late 50's, early 60's, gave us an explanation of the engine test room; we could see the operation through the observation window. There were banks of gas outside of the test room to vary environment conditions, and I assume the room itself was pressure sealed to allow for further environmental pressure adjustments. I also assumed (as an engineer) that this room had a fire suppression system (typically HALON) so when the Director went to open the massive door and demonstrate the noise of the Cayenne Turbo engine at full power, I raised my hand and in English kindly asked if the door was interlocked (a HALON safety feature) and might shut down the test. He said, "oh no, we do this from time to time for demonstrations". He then proceeded to open the door...the alarms went off...and the test shut down. The Technician came back, with his coffee in hand, looked at the Director and said something in German which I assumed meant...WTF!!!!!

@@dylanreed7555 Agreed, technically it's better but superiority is fact on the F40 side because they were competing for top speed and the F40 won. @paulallen81095 жыл бұрын
@jared price I hope you're kidding. The 959 had 7 computers at a time most cars had none. It pushed the envelope of what was technically possible in the mid 80's and was over a decade ahead of many cars that came after it. Not even Formula 1 or Group C cars at the time had such advanced active ride height and traction control. People talk about the Nissan GT-R but Porsche had the same idea 25 years before.

I saw the 959 to my right, no markings, and the flush fitting rear spoiler was unlike anything I'd ever seen from Zuffenhausen, but it was unmistakably Porsche. It still had plastic wrap covering wheels and a sticker in the window that had a price so strasopheric that it just had to be a typo. A couple weeks later, killing time in a Stars & Stripes bookstore thumbing through the C&D, MT, R&T trifecta, I found out the sticker was correct.
