Same here, but i went a little out of the ordinary with my Strat, got a Tele bridge pickup installed (with a custom pickguard ), a clapton-style midboost circuit and some switching magic that allows me to get something quite similar to a Tele middle position as well as all three pickups at once. Had to drop the tone pots though, so i have a master volume, a mid boost volume and a blend for the brigde pickup. The amount of dynamics i get out of that guitar is insane.
@sparkijones4 жыл бұрын
If that’s the case I’m an outlier too, even though i don’t know what one is! I find the middle great for rhythm sitting nicely in the mix but still clear. With gain it can yield the full spectrum if you pick near the neck or near the bridge - totally different sounds!

OK, in my opinion , the tele is like the polygraph test for guitar players. It reflects what you bring to the table. The strat is where I have mostly ended up and, in my opinion, the key to the strat is to not be gentle or shy about hitting it hard. Single coil pickups allow you a type of depth that you can really explore. One of the beauties of both is the pickups you choose and the in-the-room sound and feel you get.

Fantastic video. Thanks My entry: After decades of gigging I found (and used it to my benefit) ; That if you play a strat and you have another player equal in tallent to you, compete with a humbucker or good P90 based guitar, the strat tends to be relegated and disappears somewhat. With a Tele not so. A telecaster can hold its own against any humbucker based guitar. Strats really shine if they are used with other strats or teles.

I love both, but should point out the Strat was initially supposed to be the new version of the Tele. The Tele we all love is actually a newer version of the Esquire (which had no rhythm pickup or truss rod). Leo Fender was always tinkering. He had the Tele in the hands of some local players, and was getting a lot of feedback about what they wanted to see in the next version. Leo added the tremolo (to compete with Bigsby), he contoured it, added another pickup, added deeper cutouts for higher fret access and realized he had a whole new model. The Stratocaster was a big hit, and it was the flagship Fender instrument. But, as I said, I like both since they are both amazing guitars.

This was a great video to watch and hear the POV’s for each guitar. Being an owner of each, including a Thinline, the Tele has an edge over the Strat. Not to say the Strat isn’t a great sounding guitar, but you can’t get the warm tones and bite from a Tele on a Strat.

The most general way to put it would be saying a tele is all about the bridge and the strat is all about the neck. Though a 50s, fat maple strat bridge will get tele-ish, even more so if it's hard tail. "There was one guitar trader in New Jersey who had the 1955 Les Paul on his list. It was all gold - the back and the sides and the back of the neck, and it looked great. "I bought it and had it sent to LA where we were working on [1979's] 'The Wall' album. Not long after it arrived I used it for the solo on 'Another Brick in the Wall, (Part 2).' "We injected it straight through the desk and onto tape, not through any amplifier at all. I've always loved that guitar." So, no. That's possibly the only audible piece in all of Pink Floyd history where he used a Gibson Les Paul. Not exactly the most suitable bit of guitar work to demo a strat.

I heard a couple David Gilmour licks in there but at 12:21 I swear I heard part of the melody to Cover Me Up by Jason Isbell, which was totally unexpected.

very enjoyable vid. But man, that green Tele is gorgeous! What colour is it? British racing green?

one thing is for sure. Everyone needs a tele and a strat!! Great playing and talk on these wonderful instruments

Love the strat except for that dang volume knob and pickup switch location

Ironically both these guitarists view those positions as one of the advantages of a strat. I agree with you though, I don't fiddle with those controls mid song and when I'm playing they just get in the way.

Mick's right, the strat does have that Gilmour sound, but that particular lick, solo on the Wall part 2, was a Les Paul goldtop with p90s. Just saying the Strat isn't the only glassy clean machine out there, though it does it very well.

I've never seen a bigger collection of dorky expressions, but MAN, that was some mean playing! 😂 Very nice.

The only thing lacking on a stock Tele, is that forearm contour (comfort curves/cuts). Other than that, a string through body, or through bridge, Tele is everything I need. Well, ok, for heavier sounds, a Les Paul or single cut PRS helps out. Jangly cleans? A Jaguar or jazz master... A hollow body sound... Point is, does any guitarist ever keep to one guitar only? Even Hendrix used a bunch on his recordings, Clapton has been known to use a few different models... Still, fun video, thanks!

Has anyone tried a Knaggs Chesapeake...looks to have the Tele thing going on for the bridge and strat for the others? Clapton/SRV + many others use the middle pickup a lot, I've no clue why its so underated when its so useable. When playing a gig or at home I use my Strat 60-70% and Tele 30-40%, why choose one, both are amazing & make you play & sound different.

For "spread" of versatility I'll take the Tele. The spread between the two pickups is like going from one world to another, so I don't think anything beats that versatility. Lacking a humbucker, both, though. How about Strandberg with HSS? That would be fun to see you do. How about Strandberg versus Kiesel ergonomics and sound?

Hey Mick, nice to see/hear you here. Jay, always a big fan. The Tele bridge pickup is unique in all guitar-dom in that it is interconnected to the entire bridge assembly unlike any other pickup. Still, the 2 and 4 position "out off phase" sounds of the Strat are killer. I guess we've got to have both. BTW, I use and love the middle Strat pickup. Cheers guys.

Put bass ferrules into the Tele (some drilling required), and drop in an appropriate spring to provide cushion or bounce before restringing.

Or wrap the string ball-end with yarn, cloth twine, rubber band, or fit a tiny washer.

That intro was SPANKY! Gibsons just can't touch that sound.

Where Gibsons shine is their acoustics.

Les Paul's and sgs are just completely different monsters on their own, it's amazing how different an sg and a les paul can sound vs each other.

Played a Les Paul for quite a while then a Jazzmaster. Got a Tele this year and I feel like my tone search is over. While I still have GAS for other guitars. I'm finally quite content with the versatility of the Tele verses my other guitars.
