In the spirit of honesty, I have to admit that "Happiest Year" has always been a deceiving title. That might seem obvious upon listening to the song, but I haven’t been very open about why it's deceiving.
The writing and recording began amidst one of the darkest places of my life, in 2018. I was completely in hell. I was lost in deep loneliness, depression, and a sense of regret that I had never experienced before. Time was standing still, and the world was moving by without me, day after day. It was such a disorientating labyrinth of emotions for me, and I was completely turned inside out over the pain I was dealing with. I wasn’t eating, sleeping, or taking care of myself. I was exhausted in every way, and mentally so foggy. I isolated myself from everyone for months. It probably wasn’t more than 10 days after I started writing and recording the song that I drove myself to the hospital seeking professional help.
"Happiest Year" is really about the first year of a relationship, before things went sour. I had family and close longtime friends visit me during that first year, who later expressed concerns over my state of bliss. I don’t think I really wanted to see it, because I was too happy in the moment to consider the possibility that I was perhaps embracing a fairy tale with an uncertain ending.
So, it’s actually a pretty backhanded thing for me to say “thank you” like I do in the chorus of the song, because really I’m saying “at least you gave me that first year” haha. There’s both spite and gratitude in that phrase.
Now, in the last year I’ve realized the song has meant something much less petty for those who’ve been listening. I feel humbled by, and I started to embrace that idea even on tour last year. When I was singing it, it started to mean something different, something less burdensome, and something less attached to that dark period in 2018 when nothing in my life seemed to be okay.
In the end, I guess it’s a little strange for me to be releasing a music video for "Happiest Year," but I’m glad for it. I’m so pleased to have created a story with the director, my friend Erik Rojas. This is my favorite video I’ve made so far and I hope the message (albeit dark at face value) is received as a lesson in appreciation for what is given to us, no matter what the circumstance. Lessons about life, and happy times in general, are not always packaged neatly in a box that you get to conveniently open and close when you want.
This description is so much closer to what I originally tried to urge the song was about, and I have to thank my community of fans for reminding me of the bigger picture.
I was practically writhing in pain when this song was written, so it’s quite liberating to see some good coming out of it. Somehow it's come full circle in this music video, which I’m now happy to share with everyone. Thanks for all your continued support, and I hope the song and video can be a form of expression that helps people release some negative energy during the world’s current state of anxiety.

My best friend Bobby passed away 2 years ago. He was always there for me. I could talk to him about everything. When my grandad died he was there for me. He always was. We were neighbors and at midnight we used to look at the stars and he played guitar and we sang our favorite songs. I go to his grave every day. When I see his name on that gravestone I cry my eyes out. But when I cry I feel someone next to me telling me to not cry. When I feel like I lost everything I have I feeling that he is there and hugging me. Every night I go out just to sing our favorite song and look at the stars and I feel that he is right next to me playing his blue guitar. I really miss you Bobby and I hope you are in a better place. Mathapelo Baloyi hey! It’s different for each person. For me atleast I strengthened my faith. Simplified and deleted those people off any social media I still use whom I don’t want to connect with. Stopped forcing myself to socialize with people I don’t care about as those who care always make the effort too. Also delved into things I wanted to strengthen, like art and cooking. I really wanted to be better at those skills . Also prioritized my family as we’re dealing with a terminal parent and emotionally I am one of the strongest. Little things eventually build up to a lot of character strength.

This has truly been the happiest year of my life. I got out of the Navy after 8.5 years, landed my dream job paying double what I was making while I was in close to my hometown, and my wife and I are in the process of searching for our family a home. It’s been stressful at times sure. But my stress level has went down a lot since I got out. If you’re in the military and you’re unsure if you can make it on the outside… you can. I promise you can!

I was happy, but now I just want to leave with something that makes me feel good. That doesn't make me feel caged. This reminds me of an ex. She was the most beautiful women I ever met in my life, her mannerisms, her smile, her humour, our silliness.. Literally the first year was the happiest of my life, the most powerful I ever felt in my whole life. My teens was full of witnessing domestic violence between my mother and stepfather, and never meeting my real father at that time as he had his own family. As a man, giving your heart away to someone you could see yourself being with forever, is a HUGE deal. You never quite recover from that kind of pain when things fall apart. We both had our faults, me with gaming, and her with her disloyalty. I would never of hurt her at all, never if we ended up being together forever. I now can't ever find that love. I gave up. I gave up on relationships. I'm 35 and haven't been in a real relationship since being 21, when the love of my life killed me inside. 22-30 were years of just exploring, but couldn't ever capture the feeling of what I felt before. 30-35 I just lost all emotions and will, for anything with anyone. Love hurts so damn much no matter how long ago it was, and it changes you. Sometimes the strong can deal with it and move on.. those like me fall into a never-ending battle with depression and you find your whole soul crushed and unable to heal. Hurt is all I feel and the words to this song bring the tears, because it takes me back to a time of feeling loved and cared for, and a time of heartache.. I wish and hope to god wherever and whatever she's doing now, she's happy, the happiest she could ever possibly be. My younger brother committed suicide last weekend by overdosing on something. He was found with headphones on, presumably listening to something. This is his youtube account. He made a playlist containing 6 songs that was edited the day he passed. This is one of the 6 songs. With the method he used, he was dead after about 30 minutes, probably unconscious around 12 minutes. I like to think that it was peaceful for him with his music on. I love you Myles, I'll miss you everyday for the rest of my life...
