David Coverdale on vocals here of Whitesnake. Glen Hughes on bass. Glen was in a band called Trapeze. Did a bunch of solo stuff. Later joined Derick Sherinian, Joe Bonamassa, Jason Bonham in Black Country Communion. What a lineup.

The companion piece to this is BURN which is structured similar to Highway Star and features one of the best organ solos in rock music; another song off the Stormbringer album with great keyboard effects and a catchy riff is YOU CAN'T DO IT RIGHT

I love this song but this is the first time I've really listened to the studio version. I find that I am still more in love with the live version from "Live In Europe" (1976). It has the same line-up (Glenn Hughes is on fire, of course) but Stormbringer is definitely more HOT and firing on all cylinders! Plus, Richie dispensed with the Slide-guitar lead and just played it METAL. Also Jon Lord played it on the Hammond B-3, instead of the synthesizer. It's more AWESOME on the Live album!

Jay! So glad to see you upbeat. Richie Blackmore (guitarist) is a force and he frequently played using classical phrasing. He is said to be the predecessor to Yngwie Malmsteen who took playing classical progressions with a metal edge to new dimensions! Vocalist David Coverdale became a successful frontman and eventually with Whitesnake.

This is the line-up with David Coverdale on lead vox and Glenn Hughes on bass and backing vox. David Coverdale later went on to be the lead singer for Whitesnake, if you hadn't researched. So this is a different singer. Just starting the video, maybe you'll touch on this.

Great reaction! The most commercially successful line-up were active from 69 - 73 and included Ian Gillan (crazy good vocals on Child in Time) and Roger Glover on bass. They were best iteration, IMHO. This one has a different vocalist. For more with Ian Gillan check out 'Bloodsucker' or 'Space Truckin' for a couple of straight bangers that haven't already been overdone by other reactors. Cheers!!

Ive been a Purple fan since hearing Smoke on the water on the radio in 1972 for the first time, got Machine head on vinyl then Fireball, In rock,Made in Japan when it came out,Who do we think we are, then front man Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover left the band, and I ran across Burn in stores later on,and saw that there was a different front man David Coverdale and bassist Glenn Hughes, but i got it anyway, then got Storm Bringer when it came out,and both Purple phase 2 and there were good, long as Blackmore and Lord were still in it,and I also liked Come taste the band with Tommy Bolin on guitar who joined Purple after Blackmore quit to form Rainbow, unfortunately the band only recorded one album with Tommy.

Might I suggest something from Come Taste The Band (The Mark 4 lineup)? Although I love every song on this album, I would recommend "Dealer". A nasty opening guitar riff by Tommy Bolin, followed by a funky Glenn Hughes bass line. Then the soulful Coverdale vocals come in. What is unique about this song is the midpoint breakdown where Bolin is given the lead vocal spotlight. The ending is an all out jam fest featuring a blistering Bolin solo! Highly recommended!!!
