Thank you Jay! This is the best video explaining Fuji's Continuous Autofocus that I've seen. The way you demonstrate the camera's response with actual moving objects in the frame is especially effective. I own a Fujifilm X-T3 and just recently acquired an X-T5 that is reported to have improved autofocus tracking. I'll be experimenting with the custom settings since I photograph American football frequently and often have a poor focus "hit rate".

Hi Jay, Thank you for your time on putting this together.I'm an amateur sports photographer and determined to prove that Fuji can be used for sports. Currently XT3 XF100400 | 50140 and 1655mm. Have been studying extensively this issue and every video that I could put my eyes on. Your explanation is very concise and at the same time simple and easy to understand. It allowed me to go over again this fundamental concepts. Mostly on water sports such as surf, kite, windsurf and found tennis extremely challenge where you want the ball just out of the racquet (SS over 2500). Best settings so far AF-C Zone 3X3 or 5X5 MS CH, but what I am looking for is reliability and just can't get that so far. However still way to go on the basic focus technique that will improve my keeper rate. Think the XT3 is very sensible to light conditions. Just a thought. Cheers and great video content. (Followed you on your street instagram today)
@JayRegular4 жыл бұрын
Thankyou Carlos! One of the areas I've never really delved into was sports photography, I can never really fully apply my theories to practice. But that's great insight into super difficult AF-C conditions. Zone focusing should work really well I would imagine, so long as the subject is in the focus area and nothing else. Fuji still has a way to go but at the same time, has come a really long way!

I use Af C by model work with my XT 5
@bongiss3 жыл бұрын
I leave my xt3 firmware 4 on af-c 90 percent of the time. Af-s sometimes misses focus because of a very slight movement of my hand, tho no motion blur, plane of focus sometimes shifts forward or backward which leads to miss focus.
@BigRockNor4 жыл бұрын
Excellent!
@hlau-hk2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jay, thanks for the video. I have a noob question. When you set up to AF-C and zone focus, you still need to half-press the shutter button to lock the focus, usually the color of the small boxes turn to green. When you use it with high speed burst, from what i know about high speed burst, you just press the shutter button once and hold it to take continuous high speed shot. Does that mean i just need to half-press the shutter button once to lock focus, then when i press and hold the shutter button in high burst mode, the camera will take multiple rapid shot and for each shot, will the camera automatically adjust and "re-lock" the focus when the subject is moving in a different plane? (i.e. let's say running towards you) I hope my question makes sense. Thanks.
@JayRegular2 жыл бұрын
Hey Hendra, good question! When you have your camera set to AF-C and zone focus, the camera will not lock focus when you have the shutter half pressed, instead it will continuously readjust focus on whatever it thinks is the subject within your zone box. Having it on high speed burst means that, yes, as you are bursting, the camera will continue to change focus depending on any changing conditions within the focus zone. Hope that makes sense
@hlau-hk2 жыл бұрын
@@JayRegular oh i didnt know it will continue to readjust focus automatically without half pressing shutter button if its af-c and zone. From other videos i watched when its af-c and single-point af, the person needs to either half press shutter button or back button focus at all time so the camera continuously adjusts focus, unless the pre-af option is set to on which drains battery. So for af-c and zone, we dont need to turn on pre-af option?

@JayRegular3 жыл бұрын
I don't own an xt200 sadly, but if it were me I would have it on manual focus at a set distance
@chrisv4464 жыл бұрын
I am puzzled by the continuous AF & speed settings because doesn’t that suggest that you would have to know how fast your subject moves?
@JayRegular4 жыл бұрын
In general yes, you would have to know how fast people move, luckily Fujifilm have preset tracking settings with pictures to show you what kind of speed it can handle. For most humans just walking or jogging, the camera should track fairly easily if you are standing still.

Hey, which AF-C settings would be best for focus and recompose? I'm thinking "Wide/Tracking, AF-C, and 4/0/Center. Thoughts?
@JayRegular4 жыл бұрын
If I am not mistaken, isn't focus and recompose something that would only apply for single shot mode with single shot af? Because you are locking in the focus and reframing the shot with the original focus point. If you meant best for maintaining focus on subject whilst recomposing then, yes wide tracking with those settings would work, I would also experiment using zone af mode on the largest setting if you plan on recomposing
@lawrencefriedman21224 жыл бұрын
@@JayRegular I guess its better to call it subject track and recompose but it accomplishes the same thing as regular focus and recompose. My old X-Pro2's AF wasn't sticky enough to do it reliably but Im finding the V much better in this regard.

It's just a bummer that you can't touch-to-track. Having to keep focus area, and them focus and recompose can sometimes be annoying, and just being able to touch a subject to start tracking it would be really welcome
