Bank of England becoming the 1st central bank which basically was built just to supply warships to destroy spanish treasure ships. Britain was pretty broke at the time so couldn't afford to build massive warships so the bank of England came along and offered great deals to investors (the public) knowing the king was happy to shoot the shit out of Spanish, French, Dutch ships and take their ships and treasures. Simple really but that's what allowed Britain to build an amazing naval force.

The British empire grew so large for many reasons but I believe the main one to be that as an empire built on trade it was uneconomical to simply conquer every one and maintain large garrisons of Europeans so we mostly allied with and supported locals then built infrastructure to support trade the vast majority of Imperial subjects were content under British rule as we enforced laws equally between different tribes and groups and otherwise left people to live their lives however they wished this was very popular in territories we'd captured from other colonial powers who were far more oppressive even Ghandi who led the Indian independence movement appreciated the lightness of British rule which allowed him to oppose them without fear of death or even serious punishment. Many native american tribes supported the red coats during the revolutionary war and again during the war of 1812 because the government supported them and protected their land rights as allied Nations much as they did in both India and Africa. The empire crushed the international slave trade eventually enforced free trade and invested heavily in any area where profits could be made. The empire collapsed not because of internal pressure but under the weight of crippling dept after paying for two world wars.

Firstly we never really had to worry about invasion because we were/are a United island (for the most part) so only had to worry about sea invasions, rather than land border invasions. Also been an island made it that we had to venture out to sea. So naturally progressed a lot faster with ship building and sailing. Also we had extremely good trees to make ships from, Old English Oak. Another fact is that we don’t get occurring natural disasters here, such as, earthquakes/tsunami that would hinder any progress. Various other factors but I’d say they were the core reasons

Which same factors meant we had to head to sea to find new lands, which is why we developed a lot strong and bigger Navy’s than say France/Dutch. When the Vikings first invaded we were far off been a United island, we here separated into many different kingdoms, so pointless remark. Yes the Normans came and conquered, which again I never said that we weren’t conquered. And again completely missed the point

Compared to other European countries the UK has had few invasions. After the Romans invaded then left "Saxons" who had been invited to protect the sub Roman population immigrated in greater number. Generally they filled the areas unused by the population of the day. The real main invasion was by Danes establishing Danelaw in North East England. 1066 was the last notable invasion but interesting to know the French invaded West Wales in the 1800s but were fought off by a party of Welsh Ladies

Hey guys! Uk here. English is a trading language and can absorbe most others. Wealth came from shipping and being able to navigate better. England has been invaded many times, celts, romans, saxons, danes, vikings and normans. The population were taken as slaves by all, the Norman's were the worst and made everyone a slave and had to declare all their possessions, making William the conquerer the richest man in the world in 1066. He also pasted the first anti slavery law in the world, nobody can sell without him getting a cut. Most of the countries that were under British rule, received much in return. India, as mentioned was run by 12 civil servants and mainly ruled themselves. Rail, education system, roads etc, political and judiciary. Africa was productive, look at Zimbabwe then and now. And regarding America, George Washington was a rich English guy so were never gonna lose! 😆 fun watching guys!

William’s law effectively ended slavery in England as it made it unprofitable to trade slaves, later on it was used to free slaves brought to England and the principle was established that no one could own slaves in England, this eventually led to the emancipationist movement and the British crusade against slavery throughout the world.

The Normans outlawed slavery in England, Billy Conker himself banned it. Now it is true that the Anglo-Saxons banned it but they only banned it for the Anglo-Saxons, they had no problem enslaving the Britannic tribes for centuries, or anyone else for that matter.

Basically the reasonfor our success was our navy. The reason for the navy was all the foreign invaders and moors enslaving people on our South coast, hence "rule Brittania, Brittania rules the waves! never again shall we be slaves!" In the rule brittania song. Also we (the British Empire) generally built infrastructure everywhere we invaded meaning that whilst we used their resources to benefit the Empire, the Empire benefited its new subjects. It was more often than not to stop the French and Dutch taking those nations and making their own Empire too strong for us to fend off. This is why all British colonies did far better than the colonies of the other nations. We generally treated them better since they were subjects of the Empire to us whereas they were just a resource to the other empires of the time. Obviously this isn't universal it's a generalisation but it mostly holds true.

"What made them so powerful..." technology. We developed more advanced ships and weapons than anyone else. The word 'invaded' is very loosely used in this video. Take India as an example. The incorporation of India into the British Empire was basically facilitated by the local Raj (local kings/rulers) who asked us to put down rebellions against them, and then subsequently handed their kingdoms over to Queen Victoria. There was never a giant Army marching into some place or other and conquering all before them. Most of it started out as trade outposts, and grew from there, as either we resisted force against us, or assisted local rulers to put down rebellions. That's not to say we didn't invade anywhere, sometimes we did it exactly like you think "invade" means, but those were the rarer events in the creation of the Empire. No one can build an Empire, or even annex territory, if they can't convince a fair amount of the existing population that 'it'll be better than it is now', that's the mistake the Nazis made, and Russia is making it again in Ukraine right now. Because our system of governance is what Ghandi called 'light touch' our system of governance improved the lot of many of the peoples of the territories we "invaded" so we often found locals weren't as hostile to being governed by us, as they were towards continuing to be governed by their existing rulers. Also he includes lots of countries we made, like Sierra Leone. When we ended the Atlantic Slave trade (using the same technological advances) we discovered that returning slaves to their original homeland was problematic (because of the nature of African enslavement being tribal based). So we found ourselves with lots of freed slaves who had no homeland. To fix that we carved out (by force when necessary) a chunk of Africa (starting from an already existing trade colony (of ours) called Sierra Leone) and created the nation of Sierra Leone, renaming the trade colony to Freetown. As a homeland for the slaves we freed. It wasn't all squares of Redcoats marching across battlefields killing all before them, although there were some cases of that.

Britain has been invaded by the Romans, Angles and Saxons, Vikings and the Norman's. The British Navy ruled supreme for centuries and allowed us to establish trading colonies in many places. It wasn't as simple as to say it was all about resources, sometimes it was to block the expansion of rivals or in the Soviet Union to try to counter the bolshevik revolution.

It was none of what's being said here... If you look at the details, it all came down to commerce. The reason Britain was so successful was due to it's efficiency in setting up trade companies and trade posts/routes, resulting in easy access and stable occupation. Sure the British navy and infantry were very effective as well, but only after gaining the finances to develop a top-notch fleet and military. To do that, it benefited from gaining access to trade routes before anyone else. We had figures such as Sir Francis Drake, who navigated the globe and set charters for trade and future invasion. I mean, for a long while the EITC had more soldiers and ships than even the monarch, further proving it was all mercantile. If you're interested, set aside the pride, and learn the details.

Britain was last invaded 966 years ago in 1066! We invited some Orange King once (1689 I do believe) and some say that was an invasion but he was invited by parliament, allowed to journey to London unopposed and then given the throne which he shared with his wife/cousin King William III and Queen Mary II of England and probably Scotland separately too (I think, I’m doing this from memory so could be slightly out) and they ruled after several bills were passed (The Bill Of Rights being one, I can never remember the other main one) that effectively stripped them of any power, true figure heads, so false invasion with no power or influence thereafter! It’s worth noting Britain is the only place occupied by both the Romans and the Vikings, the rest of Europe got one or the other, Britain got both, so you could say it’s in our DNA! It’s also worth noting the vast number of former colonies that after their independence fell victims to political oppression in the form of dictatorships or just failed democratically through a corrupt few who neglected the responsibility to lead the people who have suffered poor living standards, poverty and have been denied basic human rights as well as having to endure war, unrest and even massacres!! so say what you want about British right to be in these places in the first place (no right whatsoever, but if it wasn’t us it would have been the French or even the Russians, and a world colonised by Russia would suck!) but a repeating pattern has emerged in multiple places that suggests one overruling power unites all against it but remove that power and division is unavoidable, (the independence that united them was the last and only thing to unite them), division made up of a million Gollum’s, but not for a ring but elite status found in unlimited and unlawful absolute power that like the British is not rightfully anyones!!

You fight an initial battle and win, then get the local leaders on side, then build infrastructure for the country to make their lives better and money goes to both. You try and treat the locals with respect, even if it always wasn't done

The American "Marines" are based on the very successful British Marine. Being a Naval power with elite troops used to quick actions from sea made them very powerful and allowed a small island to hold large areas of land. Also it came down to the way the British ran a lot of their empire, in the case of a place like India they kept local princes and powerful families in charge whilst keeping a very small population of "Administrators" to oversea and keep a track of taxes. Its how barely 10 thousand or so British troops (with the help of local militias) kept in line millions upon millions of Indians

We never invaded anywhere. We merely visited many lands on our global travels and were invited to stay, because of our good nature and sunny disposition. We were asked to build their railways and set up various parliaments and of course a trial by jury system. We were very often given gifts, sometimes at gunpoint but those gifts were always excepted gratefully. Indeed one or two of these gifts were diamonds and were used to make up the crown jewels. Their various majesties said they all look rather nice after being cut and then imbedded in our various crowns. But of course the work we did for these countries did incur quite a large cost to us, so we gladly excepted the payment in kind, in the way of whatever resources we would find useful, yes there were one or two fancy trinkets we took as well but nobody missed them anyway Then later after all bills were settled and our business there had run its course, we happily handed back control those countries without any fuss or disorder and happily left on our merry and somewhat richer, way. Yes there were a few arguments here and there and the odd shooting but that was merely the locals begging us not to leave and at times getting a little heated about it. fancy hey! Now just imagine if her majesties armed forces had won the American war of independence. Yes I know, fighting wars on 2 fronts is never a good thing and will certainly cause a few problems with trying to achieve ones aims, as another chap later discovered very much to his cost. I'm sure the colonists would have been a lot happier than they are now had things turned out different. Slowly, today, seeing their country being torn to pieces cant be a good thing for any country. Still it's their county and its always best to keep ones nose out of another countries affairs. Just imagine though; no Vietnam and that, a few years later, invasion of Iraq. All those lives that wouldn't have been lost. Still what's done is done and much should be learned from history in that it shouldn't be forgotten and we remember where we went wrong, not repeating those same mistakes. But that would never happen ...... would it?

Much of this was brought about because of clever and careful use of allies, friendly ports along the journey to wherever those forces were needed, excellent logistics for the time, discipline amongst its soldiers and sailors, training, cutting edge tech, knowing when to fight, when to trade and occasionally when to run. If it had not been for the intense competition between the European powers in Europe many of the little wars/invasions abroad would not have been considered necessary or expedient. Ultimately like all empires before, during and since they were formed for subjugation, exploitation, strategic interests and trade. Like all empires before, during and since they eventually end up being destroyed or re-colonized by another stronger power. What makes the British Empire a little more unique is that most of it was granted independence as a result of political/military uprising or because the time was right to do so. Many of those nations remain in the Commonwealth to this day but as time goes by more and more are deciding, with the blessing of a succession of British Governments to tread their own path - a peaceful divorce beats an acrimonious one every time. 1066 was the last time Britain was successfully invaded, the fingerprints of being a conquered part of the Roman Empire, Viking Empire, Norman (who were vikings anyway) Empire and the lessons learned over those centuries were all over the MO of the English and then the British as they sailed, traded, bartered, allied, fought, settled all over the globe. Others empires attempted to compete/defeat it but eventually all succumbed or learned to accept and live peacefully accommodating or be faced with conquest. The smallest, poorest, weakest, most pathetic but successful little playground bully the the world has so far produced.

2:40 The narrator don't contextualize at all. England had half of France in 12th century, because the Kings of England were... French. This was their Familial and Ducal lands in France, and England was the conquered territory since 1066 to 1485 by the French Speaking world, not the reverse. On their passports, it is literally written "Dieu et mon Droit" and "Honni soit qui mal y pense". And the rest of the "invasions" don't means they were massively successful. Most were very often repelled, while France faced other more dangerous continental adversaries immediately on their borders.

It basically all came down to naval commerce. Britain was very quick and efficient in setting up trade companies and trade posts/routes in all the countries it invaded. This organisational efficiency allowed for quick stability, making their occupation more solid, but also allowing for further expansion. It's of course deplorable, some of the atrocities that came hand-in-hand with it all. However, just as it is seen in ancient history with figures like Alexander and Rome, it should also be credited for it's prowess. In time, it will be seen this way, because every nation in the world was trying to do the same thing; just with a little less effectiveness. Britannia has been invaded and conquered itself hundreds of times throughout all history, lending the nation a tough demeanor. The rough seas of the Channel and North Sea provided motivation for developing naval skill and the threat from all nearby nations pushed Britain to seek power fast. Britain may be small, but it's vulnerability became it's strength. Until America anyway... Nothing can stand up to the vastness of America's state of superpower, especially not a nation as small as the UK, no matter it's military prowess; past or present.

We were invaded by the Celts, Romans, Angles, Saxons and Jutes, the Vikings and finally the Normans in the Norman conquest of 1066. After being invaded continuously for thousands of years we learnt a thing or two about invading. Once we perfected our ship building we set out to find spices and other tradable goods, including slaves and weapons, although we were the nation that activity ended the slave trade for good. Companies like the British East India Company, and people like Cecil Rhodes did most of our dirty work for us in countries like India and South Africa with their private armies, land grabbing for the empire whilst lining their pockets. We also had an industrial revolution, meaning we were at the hight of technology and industry for some time. So many factors come into play.... I'm ashamed to be British.... India had the right climate to grow our own tea when we were at war with China and couldn’t get hold of tea which originates from China. We managed to get some crops and plant them in India, although we also used their population heavily for labour n stuff

It’s all simply put down to the fact we’re English that’s how we managed to do this 😂😂, na it’s prob just a factor of being in the right place at the right time with the right resources n allies n about a million other factors. There’s no way we would be able to do anything like this nowadays even with us having the most advanced navy on the seas once again…..or could we 😉😂

Im English and proud of it,for such a tiny Country we have done amazing things and yes i realise not all of that was good but you have to think back to the times that we were out invading, conquering countries..back then if we hadn"t done that and flexed our muscles we would have been taken over and i wouldn"t be speaking English now...i understand that sum races, cultures and peoples dont like us and thats cool because im not a fan of those people anyway...but most of that dislike comes from the fact that we probably kicked your ass sumwhere along the way..lol Rule Brittania...Brittania rules the waves,Britain never ever ever shall be slaves,Amen to that 💪🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

You are worried about not speaking English but it OK for other countries not to speak their native tongue because of invasions and colonialism you are showing how little you know about your history so thats the true legacy of from England, a true pommy...there are other native languages on the island of UK which you tried to wipe out or did you just forget. Open a history book before making comments or you look/sound uneducated.

Nah. I dated and am still friends with an Indian girl and her father is a chief member of the Indian government. When we left the airport we had to get followed and cars with flags was insane. Her friends hated me as an English person. Her family looked at me distantly. It was not my doing but I understand

Britain had the navy and the technology (industrial revolution - we had rivers, coal, iron and easy access to the sea). England was invaded by the Romans... They left, we invited the angles and Danes over to help us fight Vikings, they then decided to invade... As well as the Vikings. Then the Normans ( sort of Viking French), the Dutch invaded late 18th century (glorious revolution... No war... We just invited them so we wouldn't have a Catholic king, which was a thing then. Hugenots (French protestants fleeing massacres...later we had people come from all over the world. Britain, especially England is a mongrel nation. That is our strength Viking/Roman/Celt/Dane/Norman/Africa/Carribbean/South Asia.... It's all in the blend.

You ask How Can They Do That.?? Well it's quite simple really... We have all gone out for one quick drink, that turned into a couple, that sort of ended up in a total blow out of a weekender.... Then you get hungry for hot spicy food, to soak up the beer. It was a bit like that.....oops...

Step dad? America was created by British subjects & fought for against their fellow British subjects. An 'American' did not exist until the declaration of Independence was signed & agreed by both sides. Britain is the mother nation to America. Even the Stars & Stripes flag is a copy of the flag of the British East India Company. Complete with the 13 red/white stripes representing the 13 English/British colonies. Also keeping the "good ole red, white & blue" .. Of the British Union flag! Even the American Liberty Bell was cast in Britain. New York was named after York in Yorkshire England. The capital of Washington is named after George Washington, who's family came from Washington England. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧🇺🇸

Theres a funny „urbanlegend“ that after ww2, at whitch Point the US Navy hab become bigger that the British Navy, the two flagships met in the north See. The americans greeted the British Flagship with something along the Lines of „ how is the second biggest Navy of the World?“ And the British cheekily answerd with: „Fine! How ist the second best navy of the World?“ 🤣
