This is the best, and most detailed video I’ve seen yet about the 24-105 f/4 lens (and I’ve watched A LOT 😅) . It’s so refreshing to see someone actually show the shutter speed, aperture and ISO whilst comparing these against the same shot; I’ve learned from your video that by slowing the shutter speed one stop every time I increase the aperture, I’ll get the balance right and can even get crispier photos with f5.6 or above as long as I slow my shutter speed accordingly. Sorry for rambling but you’ve no idea how relieved I am to have found a video that explains the above in a way I understand. Every other KZbinr has confused me when trying to explain this. I love the longer format too as if makes a refreshing change from other peoples 8 minute ‘tutorials’ 🙄 honestly before I watched this I was considering returning my 24-105 G and saving a bit longer to get a 24-70 GM! Now I’ll 100% save my money and enjoy my lens 👌🏼

I bought this 24-105 F4 G after deliberating for some time between this and Tamron 28-75 F2.8. Bought it used in mint condition at similar price to the Tamron. Bokeh is "similar" between both, 105mm F4 and 75mm F2.8 due to compression factor, F2.8 is 1 stop brighter than F4 BUT the OSS in Sony helped in recovering back some so I did shoot below the shutter speed = focal length rule and they're great too. Then there are 24 vs 28mm and 75 vs 105mm which sealed the deal for me. Some reviews mentioned the Tamron is just a tad sharper and if that's right I didn't mind too because I have better range and the 24-105 is still a very sharp lens, I'm willing to forego that little sharpness for the range and versatility. This is one lens I have never regretted buying as majority of the time I knew I was shooting at F4, F8 or F11. I have F2.8 lens too but for night photography, it will be F1.8 or wider for me.
@Jason_Hermann3 жыл бұрын
That is how I feel about this lens also. I'll take the f/4, OSS, and more range, because I also have a few fast primes if needed for lower light ;) The f/2.8 zooms are great for sure, but you can't have it all without some kind of sacrifice... Thank you for sharing your experience Stuart!!

The versatility of 24-105mm of a full frame camera is huge! f/4 is fast enough for almost anything when combined with todays high iso ability. @Jason_Hermann4 жыл бұрын
Hello, I would rather have the FE 24-105mm F/4 G OSS lens because it has optical stabilization and more reach. However the F/4 aperture is slower which means in lower light situations it will require a higher ISO value than a f/2.8 lens for example.
@armando.visuals4 жыл бұрын
@@Jason_Hermann got ya. The sony A7SIII is good with low light already cause of the high iso capabilities so i think i agree about getting the sony.

I think Sony released that lens precisely because their cameras can compensate for the lens issues in body, but I suppose that only affects JPEG‘s. One thing I haven’t tested out yet or heard about is, I understand that the playback on the a9 is a jpeg even if you shoot raw. Are lens corrections applied to that JPEG? I’m sure I can find the answer, I haven’t had time to dig around yet.

Great to see LOTS of sample pictures. Really shows the potential of the lens. I'm currently selling my Sony APS-C system to jump to full frame. Propably getting an A7 III but I'm having a hard time picking my first (and for a time only) lens. The 24-105 is tempting but there is also the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 and Tamron 28-75 and also 28-200.
@Jason_Hermann4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Miro, and yes there are so many great options these days!! A very hard decisions for sure, but I really think you would enjoy the image quality and all-in-one range of this lens. The Sigma and Tamron zooms are fantastic options as well, but none of them offer what this lens does as a package. That Tamron 28-200mm (bhpho.to/3ffewPk) would be a very tempting option for the overall increased range, but the aperture is variable although a faster f/2.8 at 28mm, has NO optical stabilization, but the lens is much more affordable at ~$750 US... Reviews so far also say that lens is excellent, although I have not seen a head to head lab test with the FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS Lens yet... I need to get that lens for review asap ;)

@@Jason_Hermann I had the 18-135 for my a6400 and really enjoyed the reach. However I sometimes wished it was a bit wider. 28-200 would be roughly equal and it is as fast or faster than the 24-105 up to 100mm. Hope to see your review soon!

@gregturner_awod4 жыл бұрын
I prefer the Sony lens (I own both) for OSS, definition and speed of focus. The Tamron is also excellent, though (in my view) doesn’t match the quality of the Sony, but it offers telephoto ability beyond the Sony and is a great mid-range travel lens. A new Sigma lens, the Sigma 100-400 F/5-6.3 has superb reviews (I have one on backorder) and I think will be a wonderful telephoto complement to the Sony lens. It is pretty much a match for the far heavier Sony GM lens.

@@Jason_Hermann From my testing, the Tamron 28-200mm is sharper at the wide end than this sony, whilst Faster up until 50mm (3.5). It also has less vignetting at 28mm f/2.8 than the sony at 24 f/4. Nowhere in the focal range the Sony is sharper or has better contrast. It is a better lens for all around travelling and such.. I own both also...

I love this lens. My only gripe is that it's too heavy for my tastes as I tend to go out on multi-hour (if not all day) shoots. I found slight loss in clarity in the corners in the extreme lengths and apertures. Other than that, it's almost a perfect lens. I love using my 40" Vizio smartTV as a monitor. Using a 15" computer monitor does not do the lens and Sony FF camera any justice.

@Jason_Hermann3 жыл бұрын
Best lens is crazy subjective. This is an excellent lens for sure, but depending on what you are filming not necessarily. Cinema Lenses are better quality usually, but require manually focusing? You could go for a power zoom lens (bhpho.to/3szjsGT) which is great when you need to zoom in and out really smooth, but those lenses are really expensive and heavy as well. I tend to use more affordable prime lenses. For example I have the FE 20mm f/1.8 G Lens (amzn.to/38179cL), FE 34mm f/1.8 Lens (amzn.to/3mmiqg8), and the FE 85mm f/1.8 Lens (amzn.to/2UA7Syv). I use the Autofocus when needed, but can switch to manual focus as well when I want a more strict focus plane...

How does the image quality compare to primes like the 35 1.8 or the 85 1.8? Will I notice much difference?Thanks for the video!
@Jason_Hermann4 жыл бұрын
The IQ is very similar in sharpness, color, and clarity for regular shots. However when the faster f/1.8 aperture of the 35mm and 85mm come into play things get different. The depth of field play is and low light advantage of the faster aperture makes a pretty big difference. I also reviewed the 35mm (kzbin.info/www/bejne/goqxpYGmeal9rck) and 85mm (www.sonyalphalab.com/my-sony-fe-85mm-f-1-8-lens-review/) lenses if you want to see for yourself ;)

@@Jason_Hermann Thanks for your response! I actually have the 35 and 85 and love them and that 1.8! Wondering if I will have less clarity/IQ with 24-105 especially for when I need to crop into a photo :) Is the IQ similar enough for that?

@@hazardstorms226 No you won't have less clarity, the FE 24-105mm f/4 G Lens is fantastic quality optics!

Dude, don't worry about "at the end of the day" comment I made on your other video. It was a joke. You make great content. Keep it up. Subscribed! Love the lens, but I lost all interest as soon as I learned the weight. I moved to Sony from Nikon mainly because I wanted small lenses and a full frame sensor. The lens is currently selling at B&H for a little over $800 on EDU + Black Friday discount. I am tempted, but weight is killing it for me.
@Jason_Hermann4 жыл бұрын
No worries Talha ;) Every time I drop a weird saying that I can't help control a new one just pops up! It's incredible how that works with my brain anyway, lol As far as the lens weight goes, I hear ya. However it is a 24-105mm range and has optical stabilization. A full frame sensor requires a lot of glass in the lenses, so it's hard to get away from the weight unfortunately. The lenses in general tend to be lighter though, but not always like in this case. Some of the f/1.8 primes are not to heavy for example like the 35mm f/1.8, 85mm f/1.8, 50mm f/1.8 lenses...
@talhashah4 жыл бұрын
@@Jason_Hermann Yeah. I am sticking with 1.8 and 2.8 primes. Weight trumps all for me. My only fast lens is CV 50/1.2 Nokton SE and it is still less than a pound.

Would you pick this one over the cheaper zeiss 24-70 f4?
@Jason_Hermann2 жыл бұрын
I would go for this lens personally, but it is a lot heavier than the Zeiss 24-70mm f/4 lens which is also excellent... I hope that helps, Jay

Good video, i really enjoyed it! :) I have this lens for a few months now, using it with A7II, but its fantastic. Bought it for exactly $1200 USD total, and came with a free year of warranty, so 1+1, i think its a pretty good deal. Could be cheaper tho :D Used lenses are around 920-950, totally acceptable imo.

Jay SonyAlphaLab exactly..how smooth/stabilise/stop the footage on Sony a7s3 and 24-105?
@Jason_Hermann4 жыл бұрын
@@bladamirputin5999 I really don't know exactly to be honest. Sony lenses with OSS give 5-axis stabilization on a camera body with IBIS and 3-axis on a body without IBIS. Sony lenses without OSS give 3-axis stabilization on a body with IBIS. The A7S III offers 5.5-stops so I gather that would still be the number, but you would get 5-axis with that lens as apposed to 3-axis using a non stabilized prime for example.
