Over the last couple weeks, I’ve talked with more than 20 candidates who want to run for office. There is a common request. All ask for an explanation, a big picture view if you will, of what is entailed in a political campaign. In this video, I’ll provide the overview to you in less than 5 minutes. In the coming weeks I’ll go into greater detail about elements of what I call the road map of a political campaign.

Become a volunteer of your party and learn the landscape. Go to college and get a degree in government or economics. We need smart people to represent us unlike the idiots we have now. Be the future be smart and make a difference, If you cannot commit to this do us a favor and stay clear of politics.
@jacobmoreno96982 жыл бұрын
Begin in your state legislature. People under value the power of their state legislature. Your state level politics are at tiems even more important then the federal United States congress. Get some experience under your belt by commiting yourself to your state legislature which is basically a smaller version of the House of Representatives, and once the seat you want is up for grabs, run. Run again. You can do it.

I am planning on running for office when I am 25. I am currently 19. I don’t come from money but I want to run for the house. I want to help/change the education system and Economy to make the state I live in better. I am also currently studying Political Science. What would be the best way to run for the House of Representatives?

@@matthewvaniman0 good. For now, the best preparation is making the most of your college experience. Courses in history, public speaking, writing, literature will come in handy. Get involved in campus activities, perhaps student government. Work hard at making friends, and keeping them. The time to pick a district and year to run will come later. J

So I am a hard-core Republican. I plan on running for Congress, but I live in a blue district. So should I run as a Democrat to have a chance to win or stick to my true values and run as a Republican?
@jaytownsend225 жыл бұрын
Prithish Srinivasan if you try to pretend you are something other than what you really are, voters will reject you. Be true to your own values, beliefs and principles.
@Xpistos5102 жыл бұрын
There's a few things you can do: 1) Run as a Republican. Stand by all of your values and lose. (Depending on just HOW blue your area is.) If it's purple, you may yet be able to win. 2) Run as a a Republican, depending on the popular issues and policy preferences of the region you're in, demographics and income, you may be able to win if there's one or two crossover policies you can support that appeals to the other side. Say, you're a standard Republican on most issues, but you concede to the left on something like unions, or infrastructure, or public health care, or climate, or anything at all, you can run a populist or moderate campaign and gain both left and right wing support. It's especially easy if your opponent is a corrupt, corporate goofball who has been in power and done nothing substantive. - In this case, if you run as a moderate, you can play around with the variables depending on the income of the base. In poor areas, SOCIAL conservatism is tolerable so you'd need to compromise on economics or populist issues. Whereas in upper-income areas, populism and social democratic policies are "hit or miss" so you'd need to at least compromise on cultural issues and be tonally or SOCIALLY liberal (sympathetic to diversity, or gay rights, or environmentalism) but then be kinda libertarian or center-right on economics. How you compromise is up to you, but at some point youd have to do it on the federal level since hardliners barely get things done. 3) Now, if partisanship is THAT important to you (gross 🤢), you can always just move to a more purple or red area and run as a Republican there. The question then becomes how you distinguish yourself from others. 4) Finally, you can run as a CONSERVATIVE or "moderate" Democrat like the old school JFK types who are economically progressive but tonally moderate/conservative, or today's Joe Manchin who is simply conservative on all substantive issues but styles himself moderate. Kyrsten Sinema is economically conservative but SOCIALLY suuuuper liberal in Arizona. -You can't get away with that in a place like NY or CA though. However, bare in mind that oftentimes, people run and win uncontested campaigns. So do your research on the specific office you're running for, and the area. Have impressive experience in some other field where you can bring your expertise or insight to bear. Your town may have a soft spot for veterans, or teachers, or scientists/engineers, or something else. But the smarter and more educated you are, the more formidable you'd be in policy-making and in debates. Remember, politics shouldn't be monolithic. You shouldn't have to agree with the party "down the line" and not have a mind of your own.

“People don’t like me so should I lie to everyone and run a fraudulent campaign so I can push my values onto people who clearly don’t share my views?” No how about you just move somewhere with likeminded people, and run for office there. Also I guarantee you would not be able to “pull off” the left leaning ideology. Just the same way I cannot pretend to not see racism and other bigotry and front as a “conservative” (bigoted) person. You would attend a pride parade for the clout and not be able to hide the disgusted look on your face and you’d be outed as the rat you are :)
