How many games are inspired by Bethesda games. How did Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim change the game world. Like alot. Like really alot. And now Bethesda wants to make ultimate space game. Inspired by many and many games. And now it's Bethesda. And now it's a problem. If this is a problem. Should God Of war 2018 be a problem? Because that was inspired by TLOU and Hellblade. Or any other open world game like the Witcher or Assassin's Creed. I think people complain to much about everything. I think we all know this will be an amazing game. A real RPG. A real Bethesda from old "game". This will be a once in a gen game. If they get the time to polish it. And Phil will give them that. Im sure. English is not my first language. But i tried to write down my feelings about this game.

If I had to guess, their goal was to create a giant universe that modders can fill in for years to come. They’ve seen modders create entire landmasses, now they can plant their flag on a planet of their choice and build locations and stories in the universe. Edit: To be clear, I’m not saying they should ship a busted game devoid of content. But the crafted game can fully utilize even just 5% of the worlds and still be absolutely massive while leaving the other 95% of the worlds for players to develop and modders to use as a blank canvas.

There are so many planets that I think there will be a mix of both. I don't think any single gamer will enjoy every planet and every part of the gameplay, but there are so many planets that my expectation is there will be a lot of diversity. There will be planets with little visual stories being told for the gamers like you, and there will be planets that are barren and storyless for the gamers who like the idea of establishing colonies, mining, and base-building. That way, Bethesda is able to make a game that connects with more people than if they focused on just one element, and I see this as a great thing. I presume there will be ways of learning which planets are and aren't worth visiting depending on your personal gameplay style, like where they are located in the solar system and such.

I would just like to point out that while every single planet is procedurally generated in No Man's Sky, they stay that way for everyone who plays, it doesn't change if different people land on the same planet, regardless if you play offline or online. If you go through a portal gate across hundreds of thousands of star systems to, say, the star system the Galactic Hub (a fan-made group) discovered, all of the planets are identical for everyone that lands on them. @@beatthegreat7020 Well, if to be frank, Witcher is as much RPG as Valhalla or Horizon or any other Action-adventure with big open world there is. They all have some sort inventory and equipment system, big world to explore and lots of quests. Leveling mechanics are lacking to be called an RPG, you just chose new nodes o the perk tree, there's no attributes or skill levels or something like that, you can't choose a "role", you play as a predefined character with predefined characteristics and even if you are presented with a choice that matters, it's resolved in the only ways this character would resolve them (e.g, you can't forcibly kill Yennefer or Triss in Witcher even if you wanted to as a player). And yet somehow people insist that Witcher is a true action-RPG while other Open-world games aren't.

@@JoPsyph honestly, almost every time Todd "lied", his words were taken out of context. Bethesda games are not for everyone, and they're janky, people should definitely have realistic expectations, but I find the bethesda criticisms overblown. A lot of people also want bethesda games to be a completely different genre of games than the sandbox RPGs they clearly are meant to be. I definitemly have concerns on how the large procedural world will affect the game loop. Previously, there were tons of handcrafted locations to distract you or send you on small quests, that will not be possible with a thousand procedurally generated planets. I have concerns about the spaceflight: I believe a dev said that while the gunplay was fine, the spaceflight wasn't enjoyable to him. that's concerning since with that many worlds, we'll definitely spend a lot of time flying. All that said, Bethesda games all have have weak combat but they still thrive on exploration. People still love morrowind, skyrim still is a massive game, and FO4 still was a success. So Starfield might be a good game. I think criticism has to be balanced, and expectations have to be managed.

I don't even think it's a cash-grab as you put it, because the money they collect goes to fund the development. Building a AAA game studio with multiple locations and 2 games (squadron 42 and star citizen) is not a cheap endeavor. They just added salvage gameplay, and persistent entity streaming which is one of the pillars necessary to allow an MMO experience on the lumberyard engine. @@ElBandito I suggest you look into the cost of AAA titles, and time it takes to develop. Your claim is not accurate. CIG not only built a studio with 6 different offices, but is building two games with that funding. They assembled their own state-of-the-art mo-cap studio. They hired a suite of well known actors for Squadron 42. None of this is cheap. Most AAA titles already have the game studio and resources in place, not factored into their development cost. In regards to the time factor, 10 years is not an unreasonable amount of time. That said, there is room for criticism. Alot of time and resources have been spent on reworking game systems, and I think Chris's oversight on everything causes delays, because he is picky about his vision. The argument that it's a scam however is absolutely ridiculous. You have a game that has delivered hundreds of hours of entertainment already to anyone who owns a game package, in open alpha development, making progress each quarter since their new quarterly release schedule. To make the claim star citizen and squadron 42 are a scam would be to make the claim BG3 or any other early access game of AAA caliber is a scam. It's an absolutely preposterous claim at this stage in the development, where you have a fun, playable, though incomplete product, today. There are alot of released AAA studio titles that can't claim the same at launch, some even years after.

My theory is that the “Goldilocks” planets that he said are the ones they paid attention to the most. They will have more work done on them and will feel more “alive”. The icey rock planet todd mentioned or the other non Goldilocks planets won’t have that “hand crafted Bethesda touch”. These outer/inner rim planets will have some outposts but be super resource heavy and dungeon like which will make them the important planets you must visit but for like 30 minutes with a side quest or a mining expedition/outpost elimination quest.

I can see the comparisons to No Man's Sky and Outer Worlds, and I see that they're taking the best parts of that inspiration. Outer Worlds was called Borderlands in Space by many fans, which to be fair, it really kind of is. The rpg developers have a lot to draw from in regards to crafting their gameplay experiences. As a casual player, the only games I was able to "complete" in recent years were Bethesta ones, you leave the games sitting for weeks/months, come back and immediately catch up again (controls, map targets, quests etc), whenever I stopped playing e.g. No Man´s Sky and returned to it, it felt like I had to re-learn some parts which turned me off to continue playing actively. The big difference between the tech in NMS and the tech in starfield is that NMS is fully procedurally generated. Starfield allows for specific cells to be hand designed and then in between those locations it's procedurally generated. So I imagine that each planet will have at least 1 thing on it that's been actually hand placed.. unlike NMS which literally has empty planets. It also allows for modders to call on a specific cell and switch it from procedural to their own design- so imagine the possibilities. 1,000 planets, each with likely 10,000+ cells, mostly procedural but potentially each being handcrafted by a modder. Bethesda has always leaned into the modding community because it benefits them as much as it does the gamer, and it's why their games get played for decades.

This game will have at least 7 years of development by the time it releases, if you include pre-production. We know that Bethesda integrated Id Tech modules from Id Software's engine and now we know that the photogrammetry module has also been implemented in time for Starfield's release. It's mind boggling that this is an iteration of the Creation engine. This was one of the games they had in the company memo after Morrowind's release. They've probably wanted to make a space game since the 90s going by the cancellation of The 10th Planet. Todd himself was the one that decided to drop procedural generation between Daggerfall and Morrowind for a more handcrafted feel. He said the technology wasn't there yet. They do keep up to date with various advancements that have been made and do use it to create the first draft of their terrains since Skyrim (as you said). They may have done something insane like AI assisted procedural generation. Game studios will absolutely need to do this at some point to increase the size, scope and quality of their projects within a reasonable timeframe. These cities have me excited for the new iteration of the radiant AI system. I hope they completely unshackle it!

I admit I'm still concerned about the sameness of it all, compared to previous Bethesda games as well as NMS and Outer Worlds. But you make some excellent points. It really comes down to how much novelty they can incorporate into it. The ship building could be a big factor there, and one I hadn't really thought about. Another is how clever they are with adding human crafted content to the procedurally generated worlds. One thing that really limits immersion in NMS is how, even when you find shipwrecks and ruins, they are always cookie cutter copies of what you have seen before. It also reminds me of ME1, where every pirate outpost was the same three modular structures over and over. If they can introduce just a little more variation, and marry it to an improved radiant quest system, that might make the difference.

@@DeShawnMcDonald This is a good point, yes there many other games Bethesda is taking HEAVY and OBVIOUS inspiration from. Yes those games are more focused in their tasks such as Star Citizen being a space sim or NMS being an explore sim. Here's where I disagree with you though and keep in mind I don't think Starfield looks super impressive. I believe that true innovation comes from inspiration, competition, and a feeling of "I bet I could do that too". I am glad that Starfield is taking such heavy inspiration from the other space games to have been popular in the last decade, I think that is a good thing, because not only does it mean Bethesda has had the chance to learn from the mistakes of these other games (This is wishful thinking, it is Bethesda after all), but it means that perhaps they've arranged these systems in a much more interesting way than any of them have been utilized on their own. For example maybe NMS does one of their standalone gameplay loops better than Starfield, but that loop in Starfield happens to tie into other systems they have and all together it really comes into it own as a game system. So yes I agree it does look like they are kinda just taking aspects from other space games and from their own games and slapping them together. Do I think this is a bad thing? No. I think if executed properly it has the potential to be really good and maybe even the specific combination of systems and mechanics they have here work phenomenally together, I just don't know if I trust current day Bethesda enough to believe they've figured it all out on such a level before seeing the game myself.

@@DeShawnMcDonald remember when Zelda breath of the wild had ubisoft style towers, divinity style elemental effects, and a skyrim style loop of picking up 100 sidequest on the road to a main objective, and a sprinkling of just cause gliding+assassin's creed climbing - while still feeling like a continuation of early zelda games? sometimes, inspirations can be taken up and mixed in a way that feels cohesive and unique. I'll be the first to admit that FO4 settlements were a pretty awkward integration of subnautica style base building in a betheda game, but by leaning more on the space exploration sandbox aspect, they have a chance at making it all more cohesive. And it really seems like it was all stuff they did while all their motivation energy was on starfield (at the detriment of FO76). Wait and see but for all the caveats, Starfield looks promising to me.

Great video, I was pretty much thinking the same as far as No Man's Sky and Outer Worlds. To me, it feels like a Bethesda game that has taken and been inspired by lots of ideas and features from elsewhere, the combat UI even reminds me of cyberpunk a lil. I am suuuper looking forward to Starfield!

Idk why no one is talking about death stranding. Death stranding was the whole emptness in the map type of game. And it nailed it really well. Walking in the empty icelandic type landscapes and seeing rocks and mountains made that game really special to me. I really hope the empty planets in this game gives me that same feeling. I know not a lot of people loved death stranding but the beauty of that game was the walking from point A to point B

I feel like NMS and Starfield appear similar on the surface, but are very different at their cores. NMS is intended to be a game defined by the players. The planets have a lot of open space because they’re intended to be populated by player structures and creations, and the extensive multiplayer enhances this. Large factions like the Galactic Hub Project have civilized massive areas within the game’s universe and huge player bases have been constructed. While NMS does have a story and some procedurally generated outposts, it’s safe to say the game is mostly defined by its community. Though I have never played a Bethesda game before, based on what you said in the video, Starfield will likely be a very different experience. There are only supposed to be 1000 planets in Starfield (compared to the 18 quintillion in NMS), which I believe indicates that the game will focus less on exploration and more on things to do. Given the way you described the play style of previous Bethesda games, I expect Starfield to prioritize gameplay, characters, setting, and plot rather than player creativity like NMS.

Well 1000 planets is still a lot of open space and let's be honest, NMS's however many planets they have is completely overkill and unnecessary. Though I'll admit that it is an impressive feet of programming.

Counter point... You really should go look up what Bethesda does before these conclussions, 'cause... It's. Well. Bethesda makes its bucks purely from player created content. Just not NMS style, but more just plain MODDING. Bethesda has over the years made a point of trying to turn mods into paid-for microtransaction driven DLC, by creating in-game mod shops and then abusing copyright to take down any modder that doesn't want to bend the knee and prefers to have the mods online for free. Furthermore. Well. Their games never have very in-depth plots or characters, they're based purely on EXPLORATION. Sure they have characters and plots, technically but they're barebones as hell and any degree of analysis shows massive contradictions, plot holes and general low quality of any Bethesda game after Morrowind. The "fun" is in going around a big near-empty map killing things and sightseeing. That's why they earned the monicker "wide as an ocean, deep as a puddle", sure you can climb every mountain in skyrim as todd claimed... There's just nothing to do in them outside of the mandatory cave with skeletons and giant spiders. So while it may look small compared with the gorrillion planets in NMS. This size is well beyond any actual crafted RPG, just look at TOW, the game this looks most similar to, that's a single world. And that's what's normal. A crafted world needs that small size, and we know for a fact todd already admitted to using procedural generation, so safe bet is, they're going the "radiant quest" gameplay loop again. "Radian quests" for the record are a staple of Bethesda games by which every settlement has an NPC which gives you quests which are procedurally generated by using generic lines. All of them can be simplified to: -go here -kill this -loot that with a couple aesthetic changes. For instance Preston Garvey infamously told you "ANOTHER SETTLEMENT NEEDS YOUR HELP", and sent you to a settlement where a randy told you to go kill bandits nearby and loot whatever literally-randomized "legendary gear" their boss drops. (All legendary gear is generated by grabbing a random piece of gear and applying a random effect to it, the change isn't even cosmetic, just a numbers buff, like +damage to dragur) So yeah... this is just NMS 2.0, hell Skyrim is fantasy NMS, fallout 4 is postapoc NMS. Bethesda has done nothing but small NMS style games for ages now, difference is at least NMS knew how to listen to its community. While Bethesda actively antagonizes it to wringle more cash out.

Size and scale is irrelevant in this case. Play any western open world RPG and you'll have your answer as to what this will be like. Or better yet, play any previous Bethesda game - the company that basically laid down the template for the modern western open world action RPG with the Elder Scrolls series. You'll see that the scale of western open world games with just a single map is already large enough that the adage "as wide as an ocean, as deep as a puddle" is an apparent truism - one that endemic to the subgenre and something that hasn't changed in almost 30 years. 1000 "world" sized maps is absolutely gigantic. Expect the same level of detail in these worlds as "No-Mans-Sky", the gameplay of which by the way, also focuses on "things to do" like all other open world games (important note: "things to do" in open world video games usually amount to little more than errands, chores and ubisoft-style collectathons; filler content in other words).

Everybody is sucking the d out of Witcher 3, while it's the same fucking shit as Ubi/Beth stile of game with not exactly "radiant" quest but pointless and worthless busywork that always gives you shit rewards because it's not specific school schematic. Same as Beth games where every piece of loot is generic shit with a few unique ones and the best gear is only obtainable by abusing the awful blacsmith/enchanting/crafting system. I can't say i exactly love Morrowind because it is directly responsible for this kind of laziness but by god do I miss even Morrowind stile of open world where most of the places actually have a purpose and actually gave you a compelling reason for exploring them.

Yeah. I mean, it's not impossible to do now, it's just a lot of work. It'd be very possible to create a system that handed you generic tasks framed around a multi-act storyline quest. It would need to be modular, and decentralized from a specific location. What I mean is that it would be like creating a bunch of puzzle pieces that all fit together but add up to different pictures. not all the pieces could fit and make sense so having them handcrafted to only fit with a grouping of other pieces would allow it. I'm working on a procedurally created npc system that creates unique personalities and backstories using a similar design.
