Shania Twain was offered a recording contract when she was in her early 20's but she turned it down. Her parents had died in an accident and she was taking care of her younger siblings. Once her siblings were old enough to be on their own, she then began her recording career at almost 30.

I think she was barely an adult when she took over parenting her younger siblings so they would not be sent to different homes and could stay together. She was so poor as a child, and after her parents died she speaks of washing all their laundry in the river at that time.

She released an album named "Up!" in Red and Green versions (the green version is country, the red is the same songs as pop songs). Up! is a good song, pretty cool to compare the songs from the two albums. If you want some other good country stuff from back in the 80s and early 90s, Dwight Yoakam, pretty much anything off of the album "This Time", Clint Black "State of Mind", anything ever by Alan Jackson, anything ever by George Strait, Brooks and Dunn "Neon Moon" and "My Maria" (there are others but those are my favs). Some greats... Keith Whitley's "When You Say Nothing at All" and it's cover by Alison Krauss (she sounds like an angel when she sings, particularly this song).

There is such a strong message in this. And the fact that she's in the desert is important. As you mention in the video, if you were in a desert and someone offered you a lift, you'd take it. All these men are in fact preying on an apparent weakness, playing the "hero" to get what they think is their just reward. Even in this day and age women are asked from their late teens: when are they going to find a man and get married? Like them being on their own and living their lives how they want to is somehow lacking or even meaningless until they find a man. And here she is, saying no, because she won't settle or be pressured by circumstances into a relationship with anyone NOT seeing her and treating her as an equal. She has the strength and self-respect to send them all packing. They all brag about their smarts, looks, cars, play the knight to a helpless damsel. What she's saying is - you don't have to be Einstein, just don't be an idiot. You don't have to be Brad Pitt, just don't care about your looks above all else (that goes for thinking poor of your looks as well). You don't need to have a car, which you care more for than a living person, just treat her right. You don't have to be a knight to a helpless damsel, just respect her and her own capabilities and lend her your strength when it is needed, rather than diminishing her in your own quest for glory. To impress her be kind, respectful, gentle and treat her like an equal. The rest - don't impress her much.

A matter of opinion. I find the dance mix irritating as hell. I much prefer this more country rock sounding version. Incidentally this is the original recording.

Listening to her reminded me of hanging out at a C&W dance club with my sister, my first wife, and her sister back in the day. They were mostly good times.

This is not the version that was released as a single worldwide... this version is bland and missing something. Never heard this version before now....

Yes, this version is more “country” while the hit version was rockier and punchier.

Why is she in the desert? Dude, it was the 90s. Videos were mostly about looking good, with no deeper meaning than that.

This is so much better than the more widely known "dance mix". Great country rock sound.
