"you can keep the dime." Such a poignant lyric! Back then, if the call didn't go through the operator would release the dime and it would drop through to the change slot. Here, he's so sad he doesn't even want to bother getting his dime out the slot. That's great songwriting.

Couple of other great hits by him were, TIME IN A BOTTLE, BAD BAD LEROY BROWN, I GOT A Name and YOU DON'T MESS AROUND WITH JIM, a talented song write besides a great voice.

My husband and I were sitting in our car (outside Walmart) and I was watching couples come out. And I said to him"I don't ever want to be them"! These people looked so old!! Then I realized I'm 65 and he's near 70. But we're still wearing our jean jackets and he's rocking an Eagles t-shirt ( and I'm thinking to myself what the hell happened to you people)?? Is it the times we grew up in, was it the music or the lyric's we grew up with? I don't know? I just know I don't ever want to be those people! So we started the car turned on E.L.O. and drove off.( Then I realized WTF we are those people)!!

When my mom was 90, I asked her how old did she feel she was. She pointed to her head and said "like a teenager". Your body ages but your mind pretty much does not. And your mind constantly wonders why your body is changing so quickly. And by quickly I mean many decades. Thus the saying "Life is short". My favorite saying is "Time flies, whether you're having fun or not". Make sure to have many memories.

Pick out any song on Jim Croce's Photographs and Memories: His Greatest Hits. You won't be disappointed. Croce could write funny songs, touching songs, and songs that made you really think about your life, and his guitarist, Maury Muehleisen, was an absolute master at playing exactly what the song needed, and I've never heard a guitarist that could capture the mood of an acoustic song like he did.

Yeah, I spent all my summers at my grandmother's house out in the country. She had a party line. If the phone rang two short rings each time, that was someone calling her, and you had to pick up the phone and hope nobody else was talking on it before you could call someone. I was told it was impolite to listen in, so I really never did. I actually inherited that house and live there now...but the party line's been gone since the late 70s.

Jim was a very rare combination of poet, artist, musician, storyteller, and singer. The fact that this song reached out and touched you the way it did proves that his gift is timeless, and that makes me happy. Love your channel and your reactions to discovery of great music! Jim Croce doesn't have a bad song! I was 9 years old when he died in a plane crash. I cried like a baby! The man was a genius. Only 30 years old. His lead guitarist, backing vocals Maury Muehleisen was only 23 years old. He was great. Still devastated to this day!! He left us some great music! We didn't always need an operator to connect us but in some smaller towns you did. In this song, the operator gave him the correct number when he sang, "I can't read the number that you just gave me. Something in my eye, you know it happens everytime I think about the love I thought would save me." His eyes were full of tears and they were also maybe falling on the ink he'd written. The way you love lyrics, check out "I'll have to say I love you in a song". ☺☻

Jim Croce's son, A.J., is also a musician and there's a video of him doing a duet of shirts with his father on the song Jim wrote when he found out his wife was pregnant. It's called Time in a Bottle and it's just beautiful. As far as Bad Bad Leroy Brown, it's a cool song that you might consider reacting to, then following up with Queen's Bring Back that Leroy Brown. It was the inspiration for Queen's song although a very different take on the subject.

I think Jim Croce was playing in the delivery room when I was born, I’ve listened to him so long! 🙃 Unfortunately, his is a very short discography, 3 records total between ‘72 & ‘73. Though his musical career only began in 1966, and he was gaining popularity, he and 5 others were killed in an airplane accident September 20, 1973. Croce was 30 years old. 😥 In almost any case, I like an artist’s, or band’s, good songs that remained unheard to most anyone who didn’t own the record. So I recommend these 2 songs: Workin at The Car Wash Blues kzbin.info/www/bejne/qn2umYikocSsnsU Rapid Roy That Stock Car Boy kzbin.info/www/bejne/anOxqHRqjMuLfrM Thanks, J! I remember when local calls were a 5 cents (city, town, etc). 10 cents in your area code, anything else was long distance and was charged by the minute. Then it went to 10, for a few more years before it hit 25. Also, you would dial the operator for emergencies before 911 - Fire, police, medical emergencies. They did a lot more than just look up phone numbers or dial the number for you. You could even get things like local time and temperature from them before that was given a number you could call to get it.

Yes. (There's a terrific live recording of that song, too, where Cohn prefaces it with the whole story of how he came to write it.)

I’ve always loved this song. I can remember being in the car with my dad. I was maybe six. We were flying down a dirt road in the summertime. We were singing this song at the top of our lungs. It’s a great memory for me.❤️

Your comments are spot on! All of them. We have been listening to Gordon now for 30 years, never disappoints! My personal favorite is Canadian Railroad song and Early Morning Rain

I came to your channel for some Metallica, AND I get my Jim Croce fix too? Hell yeah! I really love how you are sampling music from all over the spectrum. I would have loved to have all of that music at my fingertips growing up in the 80’s. Lol, we couldn’t even look up lyrics. If you couldn’t understand part of a song you had to rewind over and over trying to figure it out. Some songs I’m sure I sang wrong for 20+ years, lol. Croce has such a wonderful voice, and man, I love his guitar work. One of those artists that was taken from us too soon. He has a special place in my heart because my dad listened to him. When I hear a Jim Croce song, I can’t help thinking if my dad who has passed away. I’m looking forward to Bad Bad Leroy Brown. It definitely has more attitude that the first two you listened too. Cheers!

His song “Cottonmouth River” is one of my all time favorites. All his songs are pretty short but he was a fantastic storyteller and he packs a lot of story and imagery in those short songs! He was taken from us way to early in a plane crash in Louisiana.

Growing up, it was always "Bad Bad Leroy Brown" and "Don't Mess Around With Slim." I never paid attention to Jim's slower songs. Then I went to Miami to visit family when I was about 21 y/o. And my aunt and uncle played Jim the whole time in the car, and they told me to listen to "Operator." They were laughing about it when they told me the premise: this man is pouring his heart out over the phone about a woman he lost and the whole time he's talking to the operator. I finally gave it chance in my 30s, and it's my all-time favorite Croce song.

A great song. It will never fade because the topic sentiment cuts everyone of us deeply. Perhaps our deepest cut thiugh relates to our one time dime phone booths! That cut will never heal.

I found myself in jail for a few months after a year long bender and I bought a radio on commissary and there were 2 stations that came in clear - oldies and country. I'm an oldies/folk/classic rock/motown fan. The oldies station seemed to play Operator once a day and it always got me out of my head. Beautiful song. Another one they played a few times a week was April Come She Will by Simon and Garfunkel. 2 minutes of bliss.

Yea! I love Jim Croce so much. When you reacted to him last time, there was a big argument about how to pronounce his name (I think someone unsubsribed because he didn't like being proved wrong!) The definitive proof was when Dick Cavett asked him on TV. The answer is KROH-chay not KROH-chee. In the video clip below, he's also singing Operator, live. He says his name at 4:00 mark. kzbin.info/www/bejne/lXeon3eulMyUeas
