I remember getting home a little later than I should have and my dad was waiting up for me. He told me off and said he had waited up till I got home but he wasn't feeling well. I put my arms around him and said sorry, love you. He didn't say it back, but I knew he did, he just didn't say it. He died during the early hours, and looking back I've always been so relieved that I told him I loved him. I was 17 years old but always think of him when I hear this beautiful, heartbreaking song. God bless to anyone who has lost their dad

In 1989, I had the 45 of this song. I put it on the record player and sang it to my dad on Father's Day. We both balled our eyes out. I wanted to make sure he knew I loved him in his "living years". About 10 years ago, I found a small piece of paper in his wallet that said "Mike and the Mechanics". I asked him about it and he said he has kept it as a reminder of the song I sang to him all those years ago. He's 84 now. Not in the greatest of health but still hanging in there. This song has so much meaning to me. It gets to me every time i hear it.

After I heard this song, I sat down and wrote a list of the things I could think of that I loved about my Dad. when we were alone I gave it to him. He read it smiling, folded it in 3 and put it in his breast pocket of his shirt, we hugged and said “Love ya” like we always did to each other. When he passed in 2009 I printed out a copy of the list, folded it in 3 and had the funeral director put it in his breast pocket before the funeral. Love ya Dad, always and forever ❤️

This song is the story of my life with my father. Never had a thing in common with him as a kid. Joined the service n was glad to escape him. During those years he passed away while I was 6k miles away. We never resolved our differences and to this day I regret never speaking my mind to him. When this song came out, it hit me like a ton of bricks. 42 yrs since my father died, and I still hate that I wasted all those years that I didn't try to reach out to him. Your react was perfect on this song. If anyone reads this, plz plz don't wait for someday to correct the problem. It may never come for you. Do it now while you have the chance. Sandi Adams , my mom passed away suddenly 11yrs ago while I was at work. Didn’t get to say goodbye. A great mom and a wonderful person. My dad is a very complicated individual, and we weren’t very close as I was growing up. He is a good man, just not very demonstrative. My mom passing really hit him hard, and he started to open up to my brother and I. Thank God we are now pretty close. I see him every day. There will be no regrets with him. Love you Dad

@Dawn Maroon, people don't realize there is a DIFFERENCE between LISTENING & HEARING. I've had so many conversations with younger kids coming up that say they LISTEN to rap like Public Enemy. I tell them true you have LISTENED to Public Enemy...but you are not HEARING Public Enemy. You can say the words but you are not understanding/HEARING the song. It's like my Uncle telling my cousin who was working on a Gospel song that he wasn't SINGING the song. My cousin said he was hitting the notes. My Uncle replied that while he was hitting the notes...he wasn't SINGING the song because he didn't understand it. He hadn't lived the song. You can LISTEN intently & HEAR nothing.

28 years ago past April, my Mother had passed while I was with her in the hospital. When they had finished cleaning and wrapping her up, I said one last goodbye. We had always been close, best friends. It was my duty to go make the arrangements for her. When I turned the car on, this started playing. I just sat and listened to it and crumbled. Thankfully we had said all we should have to each other already. But it still became "that song" which stopped me while I listened to it. I sure do miss Mom, she never met her great grand babies. So many years lost. RIP Mom, I will always love you.

I can't possibly count how many times I've heard this song through the years and STILL it makes me cry. I had a large extended family when young and though the love between everyone was strong, it wasn't really shown or said. When I was about 13, I just decided that I was going to show them all my love. My uncles were unsure at first as I hugged them and kissed them on the cheek. In their last years, they'd see me coming and stick their cheek out for that kiss. I tell all my family I love them. I only write this in case it moves one person to just grab a loved one and show them how you feel. These are tough times we're living in....and life can be short. LOVE is so important and you don't and can't always agree, but you can listen to each other. Sorry for the ramble but I hope it helps someone before it is too late.

This song always reminds me of when I was a child of about 10 and lost a pet for the first time. My dad was so sweet trying to console and comfort me. I will never forget that because the song just came out and use to play over and over on the radio stations.♥️🥰 Im so lucky to still have my dad around.

When my father was alive, we both had a personality clash most of the time. He did have a bad temper, that's for sure, but as he got to his 70's he died of cancer. When he had cancer, I changed completely & tried my best to show the love I had for him. It was very true we didn't see 'eye to eye', but I will always love him dearly although he has passed away. Love you dad. xxx

My father died the year I enlisted into the Army at 17 in 1977. My enlisting was a source of frustration for him being retired military himself. I left with issues unresolved as it was a pretty big argument. I needed his signature for consent as I was only 17 and he begrudgingly gave knowing I wasn’t going to relent. As I’ve written home my sister would tell me she could see the sadness in his eyes as both my older brother and left home for the Army. 5 months later he suddenly passed away at a very young age of 42. Couldn’t stop crying for quite awhile that day. When this song came out years later it brought it all back. Especially the “in my baby’s newborn tears”....I wanted to just make him proud of me. I tear up every time I hear it....thanks for playing it.

This is Mike Rutherford from the band Genesis. His bandmates from Genesis include Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel . I think these guys are a perfect example of great talents that succeed as a group and as individuals. Mike is not the lead singer here. He jokes that he can’t carry a tune! I think the lead singer is Paul Young, and he passed away in the early 2000s. It might have actually been in 2000. Anyway, this is a beautiful song, the music and the lyrics combine to deliver such a special message. ❤️
