My dad died in 2008. I hadn't seen him in about a year and a half. He wasn't happy and I became the easy blame. When he lay dying of cancer looking like skin and bones I just had to go see him despite how he felt about me. I wanted to share my thanks and love for him being there as I was growing up. He was my step-father but he was my dad. He looked up at me but had lost the ability to speak. He reached out to me and his eyes broke me. I think he was shocked to see me as he more or less hated me. In any case, I told him how grateful I was for what he had done for me and that I loved him. My face was full of tears and then I said goodbye to him. An hour after I came home I received a call from my brother that he had passed away. I will never know if seeing me was too much for him but I hope it was a case of him having waited to see me. But I'll never know. Never leave things unsaid where possible. As the song says "It's too late when we die..." Today is four years since my sweet mother passed away. I miss her everyday.

i became estranged from my mom and dad before they both died within a few years of each other. We did not get on for what ever reason i don't know ? But i would give anything to go back and tell them how much i loved them. I was very close to my mother especially until i reached adult hood, then our relationship just broke down. I don't feel everything was anyone's fault, just a breakdown in communication. But if your estranged from your loved one's, please attempt at least to make it up before it's too late.

One of the things that I regret and it haunts me every day is I never told my dad that I loved him. I thought if I did it would make me sound weak and I was one of those kind of guys that would never show any type of weakness to anyone. Not a day goes by that I don't think about him. All of the things he tried to tell me and teach me I was too hard headed to listen. Now, I wish he was here so I could tell him that everything he told me was right. I would tell him how much I loved him and give him the biggest hug I could and never let him go.

@@aliciasaracino1233 What if it’s the other way around? That you’ve done everything for them and yet nothing was not good enough? What if it’s the toxicity resulting family estrangement? I love my parents but I had to move away to protect myself and my family. It was really toxic. It’s one thing to be done to me, but to continue and then spread that toxicity whilst becoming a mother the first time in your life and then put it out on your child? Nope. That’s not on. That I don’t stand for. But yes. I do love my parents and family just from far away..the best and yet the hardest decision; because then I won’t have that village support but if I had stayed, it’ll cost me mentally and emotionally. It was unhealthy.

My dad passed away 3 years ago and my mom passed away earlier this year. I loved both of them very much and I do believe they knew that, but we didn't 👀 see eye to eye on everything. Regardless, you got to let your loved ones know how much you love them while you still have the time. Time flees from us so fast and it can become too late before we even know what happens

Used to find this song hard to listen too. The last time I saw Dad I was 12, he died when I was 18 just 8 weeks after my nephew was born. I don't think he knew he was a grandad. His funeral was the Friday before father's day. I don't know if given more time I would have seen him, my older siblings did but when he was drunk he could be cruel. I think what always hurt most was seeing friends with their dad's and knowing that was a relationship that I would never have.

Mike of the mechanics is Mike Rutherford from the group Genesis (Phil Collins and Tony Banks).

The Mike that is referred to in the name of this band is the tall bearded guitarist who if you are also a fan of Genesis you may well recognise because he is in fact their lead guitarist too. Mike Rutherford. The singer for this video is an English journeyman by the name of Paul Carrack. A very good musician and singer who's been around for a while but with different groups as well as some solo stuff. He did a very good solo song that you might enjoy called "How Long". The song The Living Years was co-written by a Scottish singer songwriter called BA Robertson. Mike and the Mechanics have had various different lead singers from time to time. They have also got another guy who has joined them in recent years called Andrew Roachford. He also used to perform solo and had a very good track that you might want to check out if you haven't already done so called "Cuddly Toy" by Roachford.

My son lost his dad a year and a half ago to suicide. I got a call from my son to say his dad was talking about taking his life. By the time he called police to check on him he was gone. My son did not always get along with his father for many reasons. We were married 35 years and recently divorced. Depression and alcohol took over his life and made it difficult to talk to him. In February my son took his 6 week old son to cemetery to introduce him to his father. We will never understand any of this so this song says so much to me.

I lost my dad 8/9/21 & lost my mom 9/6/21. Didn't get to say goodbye to either one. My dad was in between hospitals and rehab from 12/14/20-8/9/21. I had almost died and came home from the hospital after a month and a half on 12/11/20. With my health and covid restrictions I didn't get to see them. I almost died again in April of 2021 when I was hospitalized with covid. The day I came home from the hospital, my mom went in and I never saw her again. Appreciate your honest, heartfelt reaction.

This song is so powerful and it had you transfixed from the beginning. Even though it doesn't resonate with me on a personal experience level, it still makes me cry every time I listen to it. Sincerely thank you so much for this reaction and sharing it with us. On May 4 the day my first great nephew was born. I called my dad to congratulate him. The call was great for a long time. But then we got into a huge argument over something stupid but I was extremely mad at him. And was the rest of the day. I was laying in bed that night this song came to mind. The next morning I Sent this song with the lyrics video. With the text. We may not always agree but you’re my daddy and I will always appreciate and love you. About 10 minutes later he sent me❤️ I will be 50 in two days and we’ve always had a rocky road. But I think this helped. Trust me sincerely your daddy knew And still knows how much you love him. He had a massive heart attack and did not survive. He was living in California...I was in Massachusetts...my parents were divorced and both were remarried. This song came out around the time my dad died and to this day I still get choked up listening to it. Especially the part where he says "I wasn't there that morning...when my father passed away..." because I literally was not there. The time this song came out, I was still entering middle school. When I heard it at that age, I didn't understand the message in this song. I continued to hear this song from time to time, trying to understand. It was only when I reached graduating from high school that I finally understood--it was an epiphany of sorts, and it hit like a ton of bricks. As I have gotten older and have a son of my own, I think I have complete understand ing of its meaning. Appreciate your parents while you can, don't let differences divide you. Try to understand their point of view because eventually you may come to the same understanding when you begin to have children of your own. Don't take for granted their love and support they give you even after you have moved on to start your life as an adult. They will worry, support, and love you to the end of their days and ever after.

I'm late to the party to comment on 'The Living Years'. There was a time when I didn't get on so well with my own father, and felt this could have been written for us. In fact, I didn't realise I was caught in the middle of marital cold war between parents, while growing up. So much never said between members of their generation, so how were me and my slightly older sister supposed to know at the time? But time and later perspective - just like the song says. My father lived a long time and got to be a grandfather. I took 18 months out of work, in order to stay with dad in the last couple of years. By that time we had pretty much worked through everything we needed to. We let the unimportant things drop away and just thoroughly enjoyed each other's company. He had some great stories and anecdotes that he had never shared before. A very independent and complex character. I realised how similar we were in many respects, but staring back at each other through two different ends of a century. This song is so terrific because it manages to encapsulate all those perspectives and emotions in the most heartfelt way. Poetic lyrics and a soaring melody seals the deal. I am not surprised that this song blows people away. It is so intense, and I doubt that Paul Carrack could have kept his composure with such a smooth vocal while singing it, if this had been his own family experience.

He was in hospital..I knew he was really ill and planned to go and see him after my Saturday job which was just a few hours. I never expected him to die but I arrived home to find out he died before I had the chance to tell him I loved him so I feel you pain buddy. He had died at this point and there were no warning signs previously to suspect that anything was wrong. From this day I still can't remember the last words I spoke to him or the situation. I often think about all the things he has missed out on and wonder how our relationship would have been today. Life can be tough. I was on the road playing in a band in Illinois when me sister called and said “dads Gone” He was 45 when I was born and he died of cirrhosis of the liver at 68 yrs. My father never knew a stranger, loved people and is dearly missed. The beauty of life is one day we shall all be reunited .. Dear KSO. Warm greetings from the UK i lost my mother 18 years ago and then my farther 16 years ago and there is not a day that goes by that i don't think about i was very lucky to be able to tell them both before they passed how much i loved them both and basically said everything we both needed to say . They say with time you get over the loss i don't' think you do you just live with it. This why i have always told all my friends make the most of every minute you have with your parents.
