This song is more relevant in 2022 than it was when it was released in late 1988. It has a timelessness about it, it’s beautifully orchestrated and the vocals are quiet and clean, allowing the listener to deal with the deep themes expressed in the lyric. Many thanks with this reaction video

I lost my father 20 years ago this Feb. We were very close when I was little but some things happened later in life that had be rebel and we had a falling out. I was going through some really tough stuff but he wasn't there for me. One day he called me at work , needed my assistance with something. I knew how hard it must have been for him to ask so I said I would look into it but since I was at work it was going to be hard to do it at that moment. Took a while so when I called him back, he had gone on an errand. I told my mother I would call him back as soon as I got home. When I got home around 4h30, I thought about calling him right away but I decided to get dinner started first, put it in the over and then I would call him. Wouldn't take me more than an hour at most. I was putting the finishing touches when my phone rang. I looked at the clock, it was 5h10. I knew it was him calling me. I was wrong. It was my uncle. My father had had a major heart attack and the paramedics were trying to revive him. I dropped everything and I went to my parents' house but the paramedics were never able to revive him. I never talked to him again. I still haven't forgiven myself for not calling him right as I came home, just so I could've heard his voice one last time. This song kills me every time I hear it.

The song hits home. I was raised by an alcoholic father, it was also raised by an alcoholic father, who is I understand it after looking at my ancestry was also raised by an alcoholic father. My mother struggle with mental illness with a couple stints in the psych ward for trying to kill herself. Her mother also had mental illness as I believe her grandfather did as well. It took me years to make peace with my dad. I had to get older to gain a New perspective. I had went home to take care of him when my mother passed because his health was bad and it was either that or putting him in a home, and growing up I swore that I wouldn't have nothing to do with him once I turned 18, in the end of the day I couldn't just stick him in a home so I went home to take care of him because that's I believe something children should do. And it was during that time that we made peace. I came to understand how horrible human being my grandfather was and that he made my Dad's life a hell growing up as well but actually much worse than my dad did to me. And I came to understand that in my dad's head that he was a better dad than his dad and that much is true. So he felt he was okay as a dad even though he wasn't. It's been more difficult to make peace with my mother because she's been gone longer longer, and growing up I adored my mother. So each time she tried to kill herself I felt abandoned. Because of the child you only see your own perspective and how everything affects you. And that's fine that is the way children are and that is the way you grow up and learn different perspectives. But I can only see that she was trying to abandon me and make me live with a man who really shouldn't have even been in charge of a dog much less a child. In time I did understand that she went directly from her childhood home to marry my dad and living with him cuz that's just something you did in the 50s. And then heard that you stuck in that marriage even if you were being abused. That's the way it was. Times are a little different now and it's harder for people to understand. I think the best term is generational sin. I'm an atheist however I do believe that there are a lot of good lessons out of the Bible and one of them is generational sin. "The inequities of the father are visited upon the sons & daughters unto the 3rd and 4th generation". So unresolved issues will get handed down from generation to generation until somebody stands up and stops it or tries to change it. So if you're from that kind of a long cycle of family abuse or substance abuse, be the first one in your family to break it. Mental illness is a little harder because that's more of a biological issues and that's not something that people have control over. However in my mom's case she thought the answer to all our problems just continuing to up her anti depressants. Rather than deal with the real problem which was my dad. So there is some choice as well there there. Don't perpetuate generational sin be the one to stop it. And forgiveness isn't just about the person you're forgiving, it's about forgiving for your own self because that will give you peace in your own heart. So that's not something that you will pass down to your children. Generational sin stopped.

That's a powerful story. I lost my dad 3 years (almost 4) ago and I really miss him. We did not see eye to eye on many things, however, we agreed on the really important things. But, I let distance come between us due to vanity of youth and stupidity. We got good the last few years of his life but I still miss that wasted time. As someone who has had an uncurable (but treatable) type of cancer for a little over 4 years, I have had both the occasion and opportunity to think about relationships and other serious matters. Among many, here are two things I have either learned or come to believe. They may help other people with their thinking and handling of things: First, everybody wants to go to Heaven but nobody wants to die. Secondly, while we often hear about someone who dies without any regrets as a life well lived, you can’t always control that. Instead, I think my life will have been better lived if I do as much as possible to make sure others do not die with regrets in terms of my relationship with them. There are a couple tough cases on my list. I’m not sure I will get to everyone, but it is on my mind nearly everyday and I am either trying, or thinking about how changing my approach might make it easier. My 2 cents, YMMV.

My dad died in the kitchen where I am sitting here typing this, some 30 years ago, he stood up, said he shouldn't have eaten the cheese sandwich he had the night before but was dead before he hit the floor. I can't say I really had any conversations with him but I make a point of just keep talking so that my sons have an idea who I am and not invisible like my dad was. My dad never said anything, never discussed anything, never talked at least not to me. Now I am 65 I would loved to have had conversations with him. My dad was very much old school. I remember the one sentence he ever said to me when I was about 10 years old and it remains with me and is a mark of the frustrations of his life. This song tells me that I am not the only one who feels something of a missed opportunity that we all may regret but can do nothing to fix.

Tell those you Love today that you Love them as tomorrow will be too late for some as no one is promised tomorrow. don't fight over petty things. Do not let disagreements damage relationships. Sometimes you just need to agree that you disagree and leave that topic alone so it doesn't damage the relationship. Life is too short people. If anyone reading this is currently estranged from a family member for whatever reason, try to reach out to them today, tell them you love them. Don't be afraid of how they will react to your call and words because even if they reject you, what matters is you will not be left wondering.... what if.

The video is so carefully thought out, the children's choir in church surplus indicating purity or innocence - perhaps the youthful who blame the older generation for problems they didn't deal with. The other choir are older, grandparent age, dressed in smart secular clothing of the middle classes - they were young and had dreams once too... The location on the North Somerset coast (UK), Porlock Weir and west into Exmoor National Park is as beautiful today as then, I go there often. A favorite of mine since it was released.

You can say "are you benefitting from that" (what your ancestors did). Then you must apply that to all things in life. If your father was a thief, do his children owe his victims' for their father's profit and the ictims' children loss? That is a slippery slope. Including the near slave status of women in the past. Everyone is responsible for themselves and their own actions.
