This is honestly the most profound song of my entire life. My father commited suicide the year this song was released. I was only 17 at the time of his passing. I remember sitting in my car just crying, and thinking if he could have only heard the lyrics in this song, it may have saved him. years later I'm so content in knowing that over the past 25 plus years it has saved many other people in this world. Every one of us is going through a personal battle and life is fleeting, and very precious. My goal in life was to make my voice matter, as my father didn't have that chance, so I use it now to let people know that we all deserve to be loved. Remember always that the love we put out into the world could honestly save someone who doesn't feel worthy enough to have it, and you could change their life for the better. It is never too late.

@@GeoffreyLaureate Thank you so very much. What a truly sweet comment. It has been 27 years, and I have, and will never get over it, you just learn to adapt and live with it. Through time I have grown stronger, and have tried to always encourage people to get the help they need if they are struggling, and I also try to let them know they are not alone, as especially in today's society there is so much pain, and haterd and people often feel alone, and if we can just reach out to one person it can make a huge difference, even a smile, or a kind gesture could actully bring someone out of a really bad space. My father may not be on this earth, but he lives within me, and I will use my life to honor his forever. THank you again for your kindness, it truly means so much.

They dynamic part of the video (to me) is that it shows the people that are thinking of "Oh no, I'm stuck in a traffic jam," and shows their own thoughts, and don't realize that there is a man up on the bridge trying to commit suicide. With the events happening in Afghanistan right now, our military veterans and their families should reach out for help, if need be. A lot of people lost life or limb(s) over the last 20 years and we need to encourage them to reach out via a Hotline. Thanks for posting this right now Jayvee~Bless you, Gin

In my opinion this is the most beautiful, empowering and compassionate song ever written. Michael Stipe’s voice is second to none. His delivery of every word is powerful. As the song is playing, Michael’s facial expressions tell the story and shows that indeed everyone even the band hurts. After all this time, when Michael sings the “hold on” portions I get so emotional. And that is a beautiful gift because he’s telling everyone they are not alone. I never had the honor of seeing R.E.M. perform live, I sure wish I had. The video is stunning as Michael walks through/ passes the motorists. I love that the words to the song and how people feel are shown on the screen. Long time or maybe new fans of R.E.M. probably know that when the band creates a video, Michael Stipe is not lip singing. So the ending of the song that is very powerful he is really singing. The thing is that he sings just the same live or recorded. But I know he like to be authentic. I love R.E.M. I really needed to hear this song because I’m trying to hold on. Thank you so very much Jovaughn!!

This is profound and so true. I have learned that life can be so much more pleasant when you are able to stop judging others. Accept them as they are, what stage in life they are at. It's at that point you experience feeling empathy for the other person. We all learn through life, but a few are at the same level at the same time for one moment. Once in a while we meet.

😢This song has SAVED so many lives....including mine...in so many dark and hopeless times.💔 It has been used a lot in suicide awareness campaigns - it's heart-breaking, but somehow gives you hope? Such an important song for so many people......like the song says Everybody Hurts & some of us almost take that final step..... Michael Stipe was a good friend of Kurt Cobain, and was devastated when he committed suicide just a year after this single was released. But as we know, for some people, the PAIN is just too much 🖤 R.E.M. will always be remembered for giving people this timeless saviour.

The operative word in the song is "sometimes." We all experience things in our lives that take us aback. Right now is one of those "sometimes" for me. A very dear friend of mine passed away last Saturday. She was in her 90's so it was still sad but the pain was eased a bit by the celebration of a long life well lived. But then two days later I learned another friend (much younger then me) was diagnosed with cancer and is awaiting results of biopsies. And yet another friend is undergoing medical tests tomorrow. So it's one of my "sometimes" and I'm just going to "hold on."

When R.E.M. started, they were, what was called College Radio, it was alternative music, and in their first albums the lyrics of their songs were not important, you reacted to ITS THE END OF THE WORLD, It was an experiment where something was said, but it had no greater logic. When they started to go mainstream, they realized that if millions heard them, it would be better to say something, something important. This is a very clear example of that. Their songs are always different, and that's why I always looked forward to each album, from DOCUMENT (one of my favorites), through OUT OF TIME, or my favorite MONSTER, each album was an experience, and it should be understood as a work of art. In an era where the important thing is the single, the fashionable song, their albums , like PINK FLOYD or RADIO HEAD albums, should be enjoyed as a whole.

The Nevada legislature commended R.E.M. for "encouraging the prevention of teen suicides," noting this song as an example (Nevada has a high rate of teen suicide). Michael Stipe is proud that R.E.M. created a song that actually saved lives. He told Mojo: "It saved a few. People have told me. And I love hearing that. That's for me, that's my Oscar, that's my gold on a shelf right there... that something we did impacted someone's life in such a profound way. That's a beautiful thing." ❤️

This song just fills me up every time. The orchestra is lovely. I have read comments that say this song would help if they feel really down but I would be afraid to suggest it to someone as it's so sad. I would be afraid it would make them feel even sadder.

I love this song. And I love how this video shows people locked in their cars with their own sadness and that sometimes all you need to do is just get out of this car, leave the bad thoughts behind you.

My late Mum suffered depression all the time I had her so I grew up knowing there were good and sad times then when I was diagnosed with deep rooted depression I went to the doctor and got understanding and help. The same thing when I was suicidal, I had a wonderful councillor and when depression hits I keep smiling as I know it will ease. I have always been a fighter and I fight depression every day as I won't give in to it. Happy sunny days will be back tomorrow is another day after all. This wonderful empathic song gives me hope that the darkness of my mind will go and happiness will be back. I needed to hear this today Jayvee, thank you for helping me sweetheart. Your words like the lyrics of the song are so helpful. God bless you all love and hugs Mary-Ellen UK

Don't throoow your hand (I always add up because that's what I heard)!..the emotion Michael put in that lyric and then reminding us that you're not alone, just hold on. Powerful, hopeful song. You can’t help crying. Always a good release listening to this song. Love REM. Blessings to Michael Stipe and REM.💜 Good review Jay.

Ok you want another deep 90s song? One of my favorites is * Freshman * by The Verve Pipe. (Not to be confused with The Verve) It's very moving.

REM was an amazing band and all over the airwaves and MTV. This song has powerful lyrics that touched a lot of people. Checkout their funky, banger hit "Crush With Eyeliner"

Smile at someone who looks sad and to get a smile back is wonderful. I've done that since I was a child and my late Mum said the number of people who told her I lifted their spirits with my smile made her proud of me, keep smiling and you don't know who you are helping. I still smile even when depression hits and still can raise a smile on others faces. It makes the day a day worthwhile. Love and hugs Mary-Ellen UK

I was fortunate enough to see REM when they were playing clubs in Athens GA. I used to travel to Athens back then, and I wasn't quite sure what to make of them then, since they were so different. But there was something I liked about them. When they broke into the mainstream, I felt like I had discovered something before anyone else, except for the entire city of Athens, I guess.

If anyone never knew or ever doubted it, your reaction to this song once again emphasizes the fact that you sure must be a smart, kind and sensitive guy 👏👏👏 Not my favorite song from one of my favorite bands from the 80s, still a strong one, powerful. From the same album you should check out "Nightswimming", it really showcases Michael Stipe's vocal emotional delivery

Just as beautiful as it is sad, coupled with the incredibly important message of suicide awareness. More relevant than ever in this day and age, a powerful reminder to reach out and support others. One of my all time favorite songs. The Fray’s “How To Save A Life” is another song on this topic. Great songs of support for those who are suffering are the beautiful Sarah McLachlan song “Angel”, Audra Day’s amazing “Rise Up”, the Fray’s “Be Still”, Ray LaMontagne’s “Let It Be Me”, The Pretenders’ ”Stand By You”, Kodaline’s “Saving Grace”, and Rascal Flatt’s “I Won’t Let Go” . (Two of the very best, “Fix You” by Coldplay and “Simon and Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water”, you’ve already done). 💞
