Yeah, it was pretty grim for young people in the 80s. High unemployment, no money and nothing to do. I didn't like the song when it came out but now I see it for what it was. A true message about the feelings of hopelessness and depression in young people. The Thatcher years. The song says it all xx

@gpreactions3194
@gpreactions3194 4 жыл бұрын
@@highpath4776 the Brixton riots occurred in April and Toxteth riots in July so sandwiched in between them was the Specials and UB40 with tracks relationship to the situation in the UK. You also had Stevie Wonder's gentle reminder of Martin Luther King and Hazel O'Connors IRA inspired Will you, The Jam's Funeral pyre, all in the same period. And then a couple of months later there was The Police with Invisible Sun. And yer, these songs were so well crafted that they could be enjoyed as great tunes, and you didn't necessarily have to engage with the lyrics on a deep level to appreciate them. And the strange thing about this year was that even though it was steeped in socially conscious songs, there was enough brightness in other great tracks to lend a balance to the music scene. We were in full flow with the New Romantic trend and sometimes the harsher reality gets, the more colour and escapism we need in life. The following year, 1982, felt like a lot lighter and colourful, but again even though essentially the UK was involved in a major military conflict, the music scene decided that the year was going to be one big colourful party. There were still politically angled songs but the battles of 1981 felt like a distant memory even though the issues still remained, and indeed we were reminded of these issues in the fantastically filmed The Boys From the Blackstuff.

The Specials were one of the more important bands in the U.K.'s Ska movement of the late 70's as well as one of the founders of Rock Against Racism. Their label was called Two-Tone to reflect the racial diversity of their members and the songs were not only catchy as all hell but were politically forward. They're still one of my favorite bands even though the catalogue is fairly small and they broke up a long time ago.

This is my teenage years. If you play "One In Ten by UB40" I'll stick a trilby hat on your head, take you home and call you an English man They are copying what they heard around them, music from the Jamaican immigrants. We were lucky, we grew up multicultural. Black and White together, as family, dancing and playing. So they listened to Jamaican music and we listened to white rock glam and the like. They are talking about the British 1980 recession, when we were all poor and there were no jobs, everywhere began to shut down.. But the music was great. Play one in ten. We black people misunderstood and thought it was a lovers tune. lol

Mainly because of the name of record label which sold most of it but also because Black and White came together through the music. Original Ska is of course, from your birthplace of Jamaica. There was a boom in the late 70's/early 80's UK of reggae and 2 tone ska based bands (UB40, The Police, Madness, The Selecter, The Beat, Bad Manners) that came after the big wave of 70's punk music. Most clubs and the folks who were into the punk movement listened to mostly reggae and 2 tone ska music at the time. I adore ska. Ska is people, living together and as such, sharing music, lives and just about everything. I think that today it could be seen as cultural preparation but only by people in isolated ethnicities. When you are living together, you are one people. Regardless of colour, race or creed. Ska is unity. :)

The early 80s was a grim time economically and politically for a lot of people in the UK but we had some great music to get us through. It's even worse now - and where are the great songs to help us?

The Specials were an awesome band. When they first appeared there was nothing else like them, and whilst their studio release were good, you couldn't beat them for pure live energy. If you can find live footage of them, checkout 'Do the Dog' 'Too much, Too young' 'Nite Klub' 'Monkey Man' and 'Gangsters'

The video was made in parts of derelict south London which has now been rebuilt and is a prime area for property.At the time of shooting the video a lot of London was in need of rebuilding and unemployment was very high.The music is very atmospheric and ghostly,hence the title.A lot of London was a ghost town back then.This track truly reflects what some of London was like back in the early 80s.

Ska in the UK started with the Specials and some other bands in the late seventies. In the Fifties and Sixties there was a huge wave of immigration from the Caribbean. The children of these immigrants and their white friends grew up listening to the old Ska music that came with the immigration. They then started making their own version of it with a bit of punk thrown in. If you want to listen to the music that influenced this sound, look up Trojan records and particularly the album "Monkey Business."
