Pedro Valente Yes, he did wrongly get the blame, but today it wouldn't be ok. The record company would still require permission to sample an existing song. It's just that today record companies have learned that it's not worth the expensive lawsuits. It's also much more commonplace, so everyone is familiar with the procedure.

A lot of people say "he should have asked permission." People gotta remember a lot these dudes were kids and sampling often was without permission, but the songs weren't hits. It really comes down to poor management and shitty music execs not looking out for their artists.

People tended not to 'borrow' others' tunes before (not in a deliberate nod, anyway). Sucks what happened, tho.

It was a great song even though he sampled Queen's song for the music. And he was smart...saved his money and is doing great.

I am 73 years old, sitting here tapping my feet. I love Rob, aka Vanilla Ice. He has come a long way since then with some not so nice interruptions to get to where he is today. One hit wonder was all he needed, too bad no royalties for it, but it was great for the day and still rocks.

I don't know how true this is but I saw an interview with him that was fairly recent and he claims this song has sold 500,000,000 singles worlwide. They were talking specifically about the Queen lawsuit and he basically said Queen has made most of the money but he still gets mad royalty checks.

Apparently Ice bought the rights to Under Pressure since it was cheaper than a court battle with both Queen and David Bowie but Ice was still ordered to give them writing credits on the song which I believe may still entitle them to some royalties. He also later admitted that his interview where he defended Ice Ice Baby was different was complete BS

It was 1990...........we never heard or thought anything beyond good times and looking fly as hell. In my childhood I never heard any hateful politics or actual racism. It was kinda like the scene in the video....lot's of color and vibe. After the Rodney King stuff a couple years later it was like an era of innocence was gone in a way......that was just my perception as a kid- right or wrong. I love watching people react to the song I was riding my ninja turtles skateboard around my friends pool at like 8 years old though........you have NO IDEA how lit this shit was. At the mall- dancing on cardboard out front or people walking around with boom boxes blasting it for a couple years at least.... Good times.

This Dude was a phenomenon. He sold more albums on his opening release than anybody in history until the internet changed things. He was targeted by black producers that did not like the direction this would take rap. Everybody thought it was dope till a few thug rappers (under direction of producers) said he was corny and not hard. The sheep followed. That's the story of Vanilla Ice. He was on track to become the face of rap and they plotted and took him down. Look at this Dude smiling from ear to ear watching the Ice Man. The world is an ugly place.

People make fun of him all the time but back in the day he was just a young white kid who was honestly into hiphop and doing his thing... he was just young and got caught up in all the bizness stuff and never recovered as an artist... it is still a good track, no matter what anybody says.
