It’s good for me to know because I’m extroverted and love talking with Filipinos and humoring them. Getting them laughing is great because they really like to laugh and kid around. Frankly, Americans don’t care how proficient anyone is at English. We just don’t care at all and don’t expect that everyone can do it. However, when I hear Filipinos sing in English so well or have any English skills, I am really impressed. Truthfully 98% of Filipinos can speak better English than I can speak Tagalog. Someday, I will devote serious time and learn the language.

Legit ito, meron nga ako naencounter na foreigner naka wheelchair at naghihinge ng tulong about direction sa loob ng isang Mall dito sa Davao City. Nung dumaan ako sa harap niya ay nag sign language lang ako na ayaw ko, nagmamadali rin ako that time dahil nalate na sa 1pm na work. Nakafeel ako ng lungkot nung di ko siya natulungan ng dahil lang mahina ako magsalita ng english pero gusto ko siya talaga tulungan kaso baka di niya lang ako maintindihan dahil iba intonation ko sa english

I really enjoyed this interview! I’m a Filipino American. Like so many others, my parents did not teach me Tagalog-they wanted me to assimilate into American culture. It’s one of my biggest regrets that I never learned. I’m 66 years old now and feel that it would be harder for me to learn. I do know a few words and phrases. I took Spanish in high school in the early 1970’s. I live in Maryland.

I'm a caucasian Canadian married to a Pinay I met at UBC during our graduate studies, but live in the US. You can assimilate into any culture by learning the language or still maintaining your heritage. My daughter was born and raised in Canada and is fluent in Tagalog. On my part, I need to learn the language because I like it! I am articulate in Tagalog and enjoy with Filipino friends.

@@dannynicart2389 I’m glad that you were able to learn Tagalog and be a part of the Filipino community. The funny thing is that I grew up with a large Filipino community. All of the parents were part of or helped create a large Filipino American organization. A couple started teaching us kids Filipino folk dances-we performed at events with beautifully made costumes. I did it from elementary school through high school age. And a generation of kids after me and my siblings followed. There were lots of gatherings with lots of Filipino food. I did feel that sometimes the kids who did come from the Philippines and knew how to speak Tagalog looked down on us who didn’t. I’m married to an Anglo American with an English/Irish/Italian/Croatian heritage, and our daughters and grandchildren are very proud of their Filipino heritage. My daughters went to the Philippines for the first time in 2017 and loved it. My dream is to bring my eleven grandchildren there, but it would be a huge expense, and a few are in college or are getting ready to go. None of my Filipino American friends I grew up with speak Tagalog. A lot of our parents have passed.

I always liked Filipinos since my youth. In my twenties I met a local Filipina and have been married for 30 years. I like the connectedness feeling and how friendly and inclusive Filipinos are. I like the respect culture also. For Americans that know the culture, you can be assured that you’re understood and appreciated.

Jared, each region, province and municipality is so different from each other base on its community in the Philippines. That is due to different tribal groups. I am from Mindanao so I have to learn at least four or five languages varying from who I am conversing with.

As a transplanted Filipino living in the US, it’s easier to communicate with Americans in an office setting, because the English we learn is formal English. It’s is a little bit different in a social setting since we are brought up interacting socially in Tagalog and Taglish which is really not understood if you are in a group with non Tagalog speakers.

"po" actually is how humble you are presenting yourself to somebody you are talking to. Older or younger than you. Its just how respectful persons should be between conversation. But it must be pronounced as it should be - politely.

There's no law man-made or cosmic that says one has to use "PO" or "OPO". Conversing in a respectful manner and tone is enough. Having said that, I do use them once in a while. You can find those red hotdogs in the Asian or Chinese supermarkets.

Saying “po” to a younger person is a kind of respect too even if it is commonly use to an elder individual. Some people like me use “po” if i just want to give respect to anyone regardless of age, for me it is not bad if i say “po” to a younger person, i just love to say it.

However, and considering the centerpiece or your channel, in general, is Tagalog-speaking non-Filipinos, I thought the "vlog mission" would have been more impactful to your predominantly Tagalog-aware subscribers/viewers (I don't have the statistics to back it up.) had your conversation been directed towards a more Tagalog approach, 75% for example. Afterall, I will venture to say that that's what enticed viewers to your channel. Pero, overall, masaya ako sa palitan ninyo ng pananaw (nuances, quirkiness, awkwardness, pleasant vibes, etc.). Good stuff pa rin, Jared.👍----- Pinoy sa Peoria, AZ na anak ng Bicolano at Ilocana na lumaki sa salitang Tagalog (Manila) pero nakapag-asawa ng Bisaya na taga-Cebu, at tatay ng isang binatilyong GenZ'er na ipinanganak sa CA na nag-i-struggle na mag-Tagalog pero "willing" na matuto. 🙂

May I just point out that “po and opo” are terms used by Tagalog-speaking Filipinos. Therefore, the use of these terms is not a must naman talaga, especially if you are speaking to those whose primary language is not Tagalog

I have a good time watching your conversation. Ann is very charming that's reason how your husband was captivated by her. I can understand Ann's 'difficulty' interacting with Filipinos in the Philippines. Filipinos are by nature usually shy. But why complicates it is not because they can't speak English nor the way they speak English. The reason is that Filipinos, although they can understand English, they have a hard time expressing what they want to say in English. Knowing English is not the same as speaking English. Overtime, Filipinos are sociable, you just have to find ways to break the barrier. Hope you enjoy the Philippines.

as a filipino, i can say na pwede mo gamitin ang "po" kahit sa makakausap mo na hindi po alam kung matanda o bata sya sa iyo, inshort kahit anong edad pwede ka mag po as a respect sa makakausap mo.. parang may psychological thingy yun na kapag gumamit ka una ng po sa makakausap mo nagiging magalang din sila sayo. but im not generalizing na lahat. so ayun 😊
