You're doing a great job speaking Tagalog actually. There might be some wrong pronunciation, wrong grammar, or anything... but that's okay as long as we understand. Just keep on learning, Jared.

6:59 “Jowa” is a “beki” slang which is a bit improper to use in a formal conversation. Nobya or kasintahan should be used instead.

Nice! this was the first video of yours I've watched in a while -- as someone who hasn't formally studied Tagalog, either, but who grew up with tagalog/ilonggo speaking parents, I've definitely picked up on a lot -- there is some pronunciation around vowel shapes (and this isn't criticism) that have stuck out to me that you might not get the feedback for otherwise -- well, the only one I can think of / remember right now is how you say 'diba' -- which I'd learned to be more like a "Long 'E'" dEE ba -- honestly it's the tiniest thing, and I have zero trouble understanding you at all -- you've got the rhythm/flow/melody down, and that's what's important-- keep up the good work, Jared!

Tagalog people changes or omits letters in phrases as they speak...e.g. "labing lima" to "labinlima"..."bayan ko" to " bayang ko"..."aking bayan" to "akim bayan"..."pangbato" to "pambato or pamato"..."Bagong bayan" to "Bagumbayan"...etc.

Seriously Jared your conversational Tagalog is quite good. Impressive. And I know many have mentioned and even told you that your Tagalog has “punto” at least for us Manilanians. You have the Visayan accent when you speak Tagalog. Growing up in the PH and in the “city” (essentially in Manila) there was joke that Visayans can usually pick up English quite quick and with a “slang”; Among Filipinos it means that one speaks with an American accent, however the Visayans can’t speak straight Tagalog.

Lol, Jared's Tagalog is better than mine, and I grew up and studied in Manila. I probably have a bigger vocabulary than he does, in fact I can read old Tagalog novels and understand more than a lot of Filipinos. But my father is Cebuano, my mother and maternal grandmother spoke Ilocano with each other at home, and I consider myself a native speaker of English. I speak Cebuano from living and working in Cebu City for many years, but my Cebuano is even worse than my Tagalog. His diction, his pronunciation is very clear, but not necessarily native-like. I notice he misplaces the stress on syllables sometimes, like in "nagKAkamali". His grammar has only a few noticeable mistakes, and his word choice is almost always on point. Even when he chooses to mix in some English words, it is not so different from how Filipinos talk. Great achievement for somebody self-taught, I wish my Spanish were as good, I've been self-studying it (slowly!) for about three years. I hope he is a P-pop fan, so he can explain the lyrics to his friends in Canada and Colombia!

I’m pushing my 9-year-old son to learn Tagalog at a young age, I have spoken to him in Tagalog since baby but he can only speak a few words and sentences. We live in Australia and not surrounded by Filipinos. It's good for me thou cos I’m still learning English, mahirap kasi kapag surrounded ako ng mga pinoy, hirap din maglevel up ang english ko. Self-taught lang din ako sa english since 3rd yr high school, at nakafirst-semester lang sa first yr college.

Goodluck to your tagalog lesson! New subs here.

@Aurei025
@Aurei025 Жыл бұрын
tama na man yung 'ipinagmamalaki'. Sa tingin ko mas madali kasing sabihin yung 'proud' imbes na yung mahabang salita, ganun talaga nag-e-evolve ang mga salita katulad sa mga ibang wika at dahil na rin 2nd official language ng pinas ay english kaya pinapalit na sa ingles.

great video! i also noticed you call your girlfriend "jowa". i think it's better to call her girlfriend when speaking tagalog. i rarely hear locals call their own partners "jowa". they would call them boyfriend/girlfriend or gf/bf. calling her jowa, it sounds like it's a temporary thing and not as serious as gf/bf. maybe that's just me who thinks this way though haha

But for me your Tagalog is very well. Pwedeng pwede ka na tumira dito sa Pinas.
