Didn't they say that the Founder's edition is basically $100 more because they are using "premium" components ? Or you mean they are trying to pick the best GPU chips ?

that's what they said, they used highest quality components to make founders, maybe there's something to it. pick up a founders and watercool it might be best case for overclocking.

Sorry Jay, you're right about the silicone lottery to an extent. But you are also completely wrong. The reason for not being able to consistently reach 2.1GHz + on air is that pascal is already at the limit of its architectural design. We have seen this across various AIB's.

I just got my MSI GTX 1080 Gaming card. It is the Newegg special which does not have a factory overclock hence *NOT* the Gaming-X version. That being said I am achieving a stable Boost Clock of *2113MHz* and Memory Clock of *5120Mhz*. I agree with Jay, its really all about the silicon lottery at this point. Also, if you are planning on getting this card, *DON'T* spend $20 more just to get a factory overclocked version (The Gaming-X vs. the Gaming) unless you REAALLLYYY don't want to mess with MSI Afterburner.

pretty much every single custom 1080 review i've read so far came up with max OC of 2030-2080 mhz. i think that's just how pascal works. i've so far seen reviews of the strix, the g1 gaming, the inno3d iChill x3, and the msi, and all got pretty much the same clocks, despite very different approaches to power delivery and board design. the 2107 mhz card they had at the reveal must have been the product of a lot of cherry-picking.
@correzzana19928 жыл бұрын
I very much agree with you on the chip limitations, TTL @OC3D couldn't get past 2100 Mhz with the 1080 Strix. I expected much more, this cards have so much thermal and power headroom, but can't take any advantage. That additional 6 pin it's not even used. BTW, that card at the Nvidia launch was simply running a static rendering and not real world DirectX gaming, and they got it 100% fan. Would have never been stable at that frequency and at 67°c, under genuine gaming load. Probably they could even reach 2300 Mhz when browsing chrome or watching KZbin videos XD
@givemeajackson8 жыл бұрын
correzzana1992 i'm really wondering how it will fare under custom watercooling and ln2. i'd say it won't go over 2300 even under liquid nitrogen, maybe 2150 in a badass custom loop if you get a good chip.
@correzzana19928 жыл бұрын
givemeajackson Very curious too, I bet the same. At a certain point doesn't matter how much voltage you add the chip just bricks. Then the only way is to be able to find a golden one that has that bit more. But i doubt they perform as well as Maxwell GM200. BTW these aftermarket cards have very nice cooling, temps are not such a limitation. Just seen all the EVGA lineup on HW canucks

So the MSI doesn't drop its clock down but the Founders you got hit a higher peak clock. the MSI still gives a better frame rate than the founders since it doesn't get so hot
@givemeajackson8 жыл бұрын
where on earth did you get that from? the benchmarks were without OC, when overclocked the founders would definitely be faster than the msi. he didn't mention that the founders dropped it's clock down, but the voltage adjusted constantly.
@rankcolour87808 жыл бұрын
Just put it under water, problem solved.
@givemeajackson8 жыл бұрын
***** of course the founders' cooling system is crap, but as demonstrated in the video, the card stabilizes at a very loud and obnoxious 2088 mhz. that means the framerates on the founders would be better. of course the msi is a better card, but not performance wise (at least this particular one)
@givemeajackson8 жыл бұрын
***** jay said it. he said it's been running for a good while and that that's the clock he got after it stabilized. and of course a 2% difference in clock speed doesn't make any real world difference, but the msi can obviously not get better frame rates if it's clocked lower, right? i'm not arguing whether the msi is a good card or not, nor am i denying that the "founders edition" is idiotic and anyobody who paid 100 bucks extra to get an inferior product 2 weeks earlier than anyone else is an idiot (cases were direct exhaust is necessary excluded), i'm just saying that waystedyou's statement doesn't make sense.

As much as I do greatly appreciate the effort that Jay goes through to bring us reviews and his opinions, I am thoroughly disappointed by his buildup to the Silicon Lottery... "Why did the Founders card overclock more than this card? Well I'll tell you why... It's because of the Silicon Lottery...", There are a few things that I absolutely despise when ANY youtuber/reviewer does, and that is when they do clickbait titles, and these big, long buildup exaggerations like they have some kind of secret, inside info that only they know... KZbin, well, not just YT, but all video platforms it seems are becoming nothing but garbage clickbait trash. Just a few years ago people made longer, more informative, knowledgable videos, and now we get either more shorter videos that don't explain anything, and are just meant to boost the number of videos and views a person has, or we get long, drawn out videos that don't tell us anything that couldn't have been said in half the time... I am struggling to find which one is worse... Again, I am really grateful for the work that these people do, but come on, when is enough, enough??? :-( Fortunately, I am at least nice enough to never downvote legitimate videos...

except you won't.. scaling is terrible at higher frequencies with these cards.. if you're waiting for 2300mhz on air or water, you're going to be disappointed. 2000mhz vs 2200mhz is around a 2-4% increase. I'd bet less than 5% of all cards will be 2200 game stable even on water. The silicon wall for good cards is ~2150mhz. You want the highest clocks? Get a FE card and a water block. Memory is effective to around 11000 on most FE cards too. Maybe nvidia saved all the good stuff for themselves this time.

Anyone that knows anything about low voltage knows, you only need two wires. Positive and ground. As amperage increases (DC current relies on this) heat on the wire increases. Thus A) Thicker wire - B)More wires... to spread the heat load. Wattage is always equal to amperage times voltage. P(Power in watts)= I (voltage) x E (amperage) That being said once your power supply switches the AC electric from your wall socket to DC. It then ups the amperage being transmitted to the device as voltage will remain pretty stable on the line, with most quality power supplies. Thus needing the aforementioned thicker or more wires. Since computers go into a small container where wires need to bend a lot. It has always been better practice to add more smaller wires to a connector. Instead of a larger one which, would be harder to bend in a small radius around other components and case parts. The total wattage needed by a device will never change the voltage being supplied on the line. It is limited down by components on the device itself. To the desired voltage for the chip etc. All of that being said. The only reason I want to see two 8pin connectors on cards is so I can continue to do nice looking 3 color sleeving. Symmetry is my vice.

Great video! Got my Founders Edition of the GTX 1080 and really enjoying it! Its an absolute beast of a card and a huge upgrade over my GTX 980. Overclocked the card, increase the power to 120% and temp target 92 degrees C. Set a +170 MHz offset on the Core and +300 MHz on the Memory, tried getting +180 to +200 on the core but the driver kept crashing. But getting 2025 MHz on the Core and an effective 10,600 MHz on the memory plus power usage reached highest at 111% to 116%. 3DMark score of 17,474 with my i7 4790K, so really loving it! I will note that my card is part of a custom loop with my CPU & 240mm radiator, temps were hovering around 47 to 55 Degrees C under load. Can't test Asic quality as my GPU-Z is saying the video card is not supported, so yeah.

I think this is the first time i've ever seen an overclocking review not have some super amazing sample that overclocks for days. This is much more in line with the kind of results i get whenever i buy a chip or graphics card for myself lol. I had a 2500k that couldn't hit 4ghz on water, and my 970 can only overclock around 60-75mhz on the core just like this before stability becomes an issue.

Great video again. Can you do video about the Asus gtx 1080 Strix if you get one? Want to see the potential of that one.

May I suggest that you use either two cameras or capture the screen, so you can show the numbers from the top left corner? Just like a zoomed view, so we are actually able to read it.

+200 and +500 is what we're used to now on an overclock. I have it on my 970 as well. The msi card is still preferable to the founder's card , cause of the better cooling solution.
@khalore59718 жыл бұрын
@JayzTwoCents I could only get my Founders 1080 to OC to 2050 mhz on the stock cooling. Temps were not an issue for me, though I am sure they'll get much lower with the EK water block I ordered. Keep up the good work.

Great review as always, and it it confirms what I think about Silicon Lottery for quite a moment now. Well, I'm still waiting for the final clockspeeds of the Gaming Z edition asking myself if I really want that babe in my rig ^^ You done a pretty good job here captain', keep on doin' the good job.

With custom bios that unlocks voltage and removes boost 3.0, this card should easily get above founders edition.

Since everyone started complaining on release day about the single 8 pin, I've been betting that it wouldn't make a difference unless you're LN2 coolling. I think people just assume that it will be an issue without thinking about the technology. We've seen this before in OC3D's 750ti video where a MSI without a 6 pin, out clocked and performed the Asus 6 pin version. It also used less power.

Did they bin at all on Founders Edition, mine does 2.1 and +500 on RAM without a problem. Glad I pulled the trigger on it.

Just finished overclocking mine. Maxed at 2138 with 4% overvoltage. My max temp was 68 degrees. Surprisingly, I didn't see a huge increase in min/max FPS numbers at 3440X1440 with the OC. (63.2 Max FPS at that resolution if you're wondering)

My Extreme Gaming GTX 970 runs at 1605 Mhz.. I love this card, I won the lottery BIG TIME. Hopefully my 1070 does the same when I get one. :P

Gosh Jay, I really like how well you benchmark, like you say, you can't argue with the facts! I was very surprised that it didn't perform better given it had more power. Have you had a chance to test the EVGA FTW and the SuperClock editions? They have 2 bios..

I like the slight redesign that MSI did to their card. It makes it pop out a bit more and look more striking.

previous heatpipes were flattened, not milled flat, prior to that it was intra block pipes. i cannot fathom why they made claims about square piping when it is highly inefficient for space.

Thats the 3rd review i see of this card, and all the overclocking results is similar to yours. I had a Founders edition for a couple of days, GPU max was 2000 mhz in most games, and +600 mhz on the RAM. But made noise like a blowdryer. I now got a Gigabyte G1 Gaming (std. PCB - 1x 8pin) - Clocks are between 2025-2088 in games and benchmarks. Ram reaches just over 400+ mhz, but the funny thing is, if i set it above 400 mhz, the results gets worse. The best result i +400 mhz on the RAM. Temp is 72-73 degrees C with standard fan profile. Very happy with the card :)

I am impress i have not see that coming. in fact i have being seeing a lot of different numbers. the only line is that is better than 980ti and a kick on the titan. There will a lot of vendors with a lot of flavors in any color, leds, lights, and coolers. let see what tomorrow will bring. Thanks Jay!

I was finally able to pick this card up today from my local shop. They only got two in and luckily I got one of them :) So far it's a good card but I was definitely hoping for more oc potential. the rgb is cool but weird because like you said the design of the card has red in it with unchangeable rgb on the red fins (at least for me it doesn't change). Also it doesn't keep the lighting I set so I keep having to set it every time when I start up my PC. Super quiet card though and I love it so far
