I would say one component I severely underestimated was the importance of the Hard Drive - if you have insane components with a HDD instead of an SSD, you will suffer big time on some games when it comes to LOD and textures popping in super late. Took me ages to solve that mystery when playing Kingdom Come Deliverance and an SSD fixed it immediately. Speedy storage actually does matter but again, I'm sure there's an art to spending appropriate vs ridiculous in the same vein as a motherboard.
@BrucePain-_-2 жыл бұрын
this one is no brainer... who builds PC with HDD instead of SSD in last 3-4 years...
@NuclearHeadshot2 жыл бұрын
@@BrucePain-_- bulk storage? SSDs are still bad value for money when you need absolute volume, although far less so than it used to be. As for who'd need that much storage, audio/video recordings take up huge space. Let's calculate because I've got nothing better to do. A 10 minute audio recording at 48kHz sample rate and 24 bit depth is over 86MB in mono, multiplied by amount of tracks you record which for drums is 10-20 microphones depending on size of kit and setup. A 10 minute recording project of drums is 860MB-1.6GB. If you also add a normal band setup with 2 guitars (each guitar doubled per industry standard), bass, and two vocals (usually also doubled), you're sitting at 19-30 tracks, at so 1.6-2-4GB per 10 minutes of recording. 4k60fps video recordings are also HUGE in size, at around 750MB per minute. A music video project for said 10 minute song in 4k60fps is at least 7.5GB in size. Usually it's at least double because of the recorded material that doesn't make the final cut. Both cases disregard retakes which usually aren't deleted beforehand if at all either, and we're still talking minimum of 16.6GB in total for 10 minutes of finished product.

If any of you watching this video are debating wether to build your first PC or buy one pre built, 100% build your own. It is a bit intimidating, but it took me an afternoon to figure out all the basics. I bought mine as an impulse buy on black friday. Hey can one of you answer a really easy question I want to build my own but one thing im confused about is what do i do about the OS? Like if i buy a PRE-BUILT pc then windows comes already installed But if i build my own from the ground up how do i get windows on there without having to buy it separately?
@JM-hj3sm Жыл бұрын
@Gorilla Pimp I already had a license key that came with my prebuilt. I know there are ways that you can get Windows license key pretty cheap. Just be careful where you get it from. I have a USB boot drive, which is just a USB flash drive that has the OS on it that I can use to upload it onto a computer if I have to, but I'd still need the product key. There are guides online on how to do this, it's pretty simple. I'm just not that good at explaining things. I think you can use a product key from an old computer you don't use, even if it's not Windows 10 or 11. Just make sure it's deactivated on your old computer. If you're only option is to buy a new product key, consider using Linux OS instead. It's a perfectly good OS. It is a bit daunting to download and use at first, but there are flavors of it that are quite easy to learn and a ton of guides on how to install and use many different flavors of Linux. Many people prefer Linux. I have used many different versions of it at work and school and am constantly debating wether or not I should switch over to Linux or have it duel booted on my computer. TL;DGAS You can download Windows onto a USB and install it that way. There are places where you can get a cheap product key, or you can use a key from an old laptop or something. If you're considering spending over 100 bucks on a product key, Linux OS is a free alternative to Windows OS. You can find guides on how to do any of this online, including here on KZbin. I hope I pointed you in the right direction. Goodluck.

Yeah I have tried to explain to people before that buying a more expensive CPU to "future proof" doesnt really work. Whether you buy an i5, an i7 or an i9, theyre all going to become outdated in 3-5 years time as their IPC is similar and majority of games are more fussed about IPC than they are about raw thread count. Theyre also all going to be on the same socket so all the motherboard features start become outdated at the same time too. One of my previous rigs was a 3rd gen i5, it wouldnt have mattered if i had bought a 3rd gen i7 instead because i still wouldnt have DDR4 support, m.2 support and with the same clockspeed the difference in FPS is minimal. So i wouldve upgraded around the same time anyway.

Hey Jayz, thanks for the post. perhaps one way to look at it is to split the budget in rough % for each component eg 50-60% for GFX, 25-30%% for cpu, 10-15% for memory ( or whatever ) and 35% for mobo. that may give us a way to balance the budget on a scalable value build. it would give us a rough framework for a 500-1500 dollar build on the main 4 components. Just some thoughts
@crackwitz Жыл бұрын
That adds up to 120-140% but I get your point... Which is different from the video's point: independent of budget, spend sensibly on the least important parts, THEN spend the rest on the GPU. More budget doesn't mean to spend more on the mainboard.

Been following you for some time, and I really do like your style. I know this is an older video, but I'm pretty much watching/learning everything I can before I start my own build. The reason I went back to this one is because of the title, where to save money. This brings me to graphics cards. Most everywhere I look today (Best Buy, Amazon, New Egg, etc.) for RTX 30x series (or even 40x) are either out of stock or crazy over priced. Then, when checking out new drivers for my existing setup (RTX 3060ti) I noticed Nvidia had a products tab. It appears I can purchase a new 3090ti for $1,100. I've never seen them listed as a 'store' and I was looking for your thoughts. Any reason why I should not purchase from them directly?

There are a couple of specific games that I play that definitely benefit from the jump to 32 GB of ram. DCS and highly modded Kerbal space program. In fact, cpu and memory bottlenecks in Kerbal are what drove me to my latest system rebuild. That said, I understand why you strongly stated that 16gb was the sweet spot. For most people it will be. And a later upgrade to 32 if you hit one of these games where it's actually a problem is probably not that bad. Keep the initial sticker shock down and upgrade if definitely needed.

Great video, thanks for looking out for the new builders out there. Video card is definitely where to spend the extra money. Spend a few more dollars in quality for other parts. I.e., cheap power supplies can cause you to have a real bad day. Overspending is different than finding a good quality product and not cheaping out. RGBs and case choice are relatively cheap and give you a chance to add some character to your build. Having said that, I see some ridiculously priced RGB and $500 cases, neither of which are necessary. Spend $100-$150 on a quality case and deck it out with reasonably priced lighting/fans. Busted the bank on my first build in 2005. I now buy one step above what I need and typically don’t find myself needing to overclock the GPU or RAM. Bought a 1080ti and 8600k in 2017 and I finally found the right balance between price and performance. I frequently upgraded prior to my 2017 build and had overspent on CPUs for years. Getting the 1080ti when it was on top of the heap in 2017, I really though I would regret the 8600k purchase. 4 years on and saving $150 not getting the i7 was a great choice. That $150 saved kept me on budget even with the 1080ti purchase. Honestly had I not purchased the reverb G2 I would still be happy with my 2017 build for 4K gaming. As a result of my obsession with VR, I was recently forced to buy a prebuilt to get my hands on the 3070. I wanted a 3080 for the Reverb G2, but $2000 for a GPU isn’t happening. I ended up with a Lenovo Legion 7i desktop with a 10700k and RTX 3070. I passed my 1080ti/8600k build down to my son. After testing the 3070 with the 8600k and trying THE 1080TI with the 10700k, I don’t see much of a performance boost from the 10700k over the 8600k. Had I been able to get my hands on the 3080 at retail, not sure I would have needed to moved on from the 8600k. The only area I disagree with Jay is the amount of RAM. I do agree that 3000MHz is the sweet spot for speed. If you are a 4K or VR gamer, especially running flight or racing sims, 32 GB is certainly a nice thing to have. Not that I ever use 32GB, but I certainly get into the low 20GB range for RAM usage. If you have 16GB, Windows may only be using 12GB as it has to reserve the last 4 for the OS to run. I upgraded to 32GB last year and what a difference. Not necessarily a big difference in FPS, but in the simulators I had far less stuttering and lag with 32GB. The extra $80 to go from 16 to 32GB of RAM was a far better investment than the seemingly useless upgrade going from the 4 year old 8600k to the 10700k.
