There is this, but there is also the fact that the crypto market isn't there to carry their expected margins anymore. So Nvidia in this case expects gamers to now carry on spending and covering the same price and demand as the miner's did, the miners that made money on these GPUs back in the day.

Interesting coming back to this video 5 months later. 3090 Ti is still ~$1,600 on Amazon while 4070 Ti can be easily had for $799 (including several model options). Considering the massive improvement to efficiency, that makes the 4070 Ti seem like a great option. It is still expensive, which everything is, but in the actual landscape of GPU pricing it provides solid value. Just wish it had 16GB of VRAM rather than 12.

I got my Palit 4070Ti GameRock for 1,000USD when it came out. Keep in mind prices in Bulgaria are always higher than the US or most countries for that matter. At the time of purchasing, second hand 3090 TIs were still going for 1,500USD+, if you could even find one. 3080 Tis were going for around 1,500USD brand new, and around 900-1,100USD second hand. Thus why I chose to go with the 4070Ti, as it's brand new and has 2 years of warranty. I do not regret my purchase. Even with that price, my whole system turned out to around 1700 USD. Performance is great at 1440P, at 4K you do need DLSS in some titles if you want higher FPS, but Frame Gen does help a lot with that. At 1080P, it gets bottlenecked by my CPU (R5 5600X). It's actually a pretty decent GPU in my opinion, though, the price could've been better. And yes, it could've benefitted from 16 gigs of VRAM instead of 12, as some games fill that up. *cough* TLOU Part 1...

IMO this tier creeping comes primarily from the 4K gaming push. Nvidia knew they didn't have the juice to push 4K, but they told us they did as far back as the 1080 ti, using cherry-picked benchmarks and tricks (which has now gone as far as FRAME INTERPOLATION) to portray their products as more capable than they actually are. But because they couldn't push out 80-series cards capable of achieving the performance gamers wanted and expected (based on Nvidias own lies), they slowly started pushing the tiers up. Now they're just building cards with 90-series performance, giving them 90-series prices, but calling them 80-series (and likewise all the way down the product stack), and it's because of the bullshit 4K push. They want you to feel like your "mid-range" 4070 ti is super-capable. It's not. If it was actually built to a mid-range price point under the hood, today's 4070 ti would perform the same as a 3070 ti (because the 3070 ti is more like a 3080 ti, price-wise). Oops, it's almost like they squeezed in an entire generation of false progress by giving higher-end cards the names of lower-end cards! They jumped the gun on 4K, misled consumers about their capability for generations, and now they have to keep covering up their lies with more lies, because if they release a new generation of cards and are honest about the performance from the start it's gonna brutalize their stock price and PR. The stagnation would catch up with them, and they would lose an entire generation worth of progress, undoing the years-long pricing games they employed. They can never let that happen, so more lies and more tricks is all we're gonna get. Worth mentioning: of course the tensor cores contributed to the cost increase and overpricing in each tier. We're all forced to pay for those things, whether we use them or not. But that little bit of extra hardware isn't responsible for pushing these cards 2 tiers up in price.

Firstly, the majority of people are not buying these cards due to the economy in a global recession/depression. These cards are inflated to prevent "regular" people from spending and leaving it to those that can afford it. Nice one. Yeah 4070ti if you check the benchmarking charts, sits quite high up there. It's about performance and this card delivers in spades. @@luissalguero686 It is their faul, too. Sure the people that purchase everything without thinking about it, even from sculpers are not the smartest but if for example nvidia would restrict the order amount to one card (or even 5) per address the sculpers had less chances to get their hands on an infinite amount of cards and sell the for around double the price. But what they did is raise their prices since stupid people would buy it anyway. As a company it is understandable. They want money and as long as the cards get sold it doesn‘t matter to them who will pay them. But that is the point. It‘s important to find the sweetspot between making it almost impossible to get the card at a normal price and having them all sold to valuable customers that are actually willing to use them instead of reselling at an insane pricepoint.

I was nuts back in the day, I had a little disposable cash and bought a Titan Black for over $1,100. I thought I was crazy for spending over $1k on a graphics card. It was fun though, having bleeding edge performance. Ironically, I sold that card for as much as I paid for it one year later after the 1070 was released. I bought the 1070 at release for $500, and pocketed the $600 difference. The performance was identical, and that's a real value proposition. The Titan Black was the only tech thing that I have ever sold later for as much as I paid for it. Then crypto went insane, there were card shortages, prices shot through the roof, then Covid. The whole time I have kept my 1070 waiting for prices (and availability) to come back to reality. Honestly, at this point, this is just an insult from Nvidia. By pricing this way, I'll just hold onto my existing card for longer. Previously, I purchased a 780, 980, Titan Black, and a 1070 from Nvidia. Oh well, if that's the way they want to play it, games are still fun with my 1070. Maybe I'll buy one card from them every decade - it's already been 6.5 years on the 1070 and I am still enjoying it. I never thought I'd own a graphics card for as long as a car.

I think they're only pricing new cards so high to encourage people to buy up the rest of the 30 series first. I know it sounds unrealistic, but once they're gone, then prices might fall somewhat, because Nvidia know they are pricing themselves out of sales at this level price/performance (currently that's ok for them because they don't want to undermine sales of their 30 series stock). But once their 30 series cards are cleared, then they won't have anything that mid to lower end buyers will realistically buy (at least not many will pay current prices) so I figure (or hope) 40 series prices should start to fall a little, probably in modest steps, so they can try and tempt more people to bite. This all ignores the potential impact of competition from AMD and maybe Intel. Although AMD haven't matched the 4090 in performance, they will be able to match lower end 40 series cards, and have lower marginal cost. So hopefully they will undercut nvidia to steal market share. If that happens then defensive price cuts from nvidia may come sooner. At least this is all in principle, anyway. Cross your fingers and don't pay extortionate prices for cards guys

@Zoran that's only true if nvidia doesn't release cards in lower price brackets. If the 4050 ends up being $400 but 20-30% faster than a 3070 then it would be a good value still. If there is something we can learn from this, it's that they can put the prices that they want and there is not much we can do about it. But if we stop buying it, they have to bring them down. The 4000 serie is not selling as it is expected and we can keep it that way until they make a move.

Exactly, supply and demand. A seller can ask whatever price they want. The buyer has the choice to say no and either: hold out, or seek a competitive product. This card isn't 'top of the line' and shouldn't cost more than an entire console (PS5). In fact, if NVIDIA keeps this up, I suspect it will hurt game sales of AAA titles on the PC in the future. Or, alternatively this will boost AMD if they get their prices down.

You can now get them used for AU$350~ but that fact it was more than double for a budget/midrange card was depressing. The 2060 and 3060 both sucked yet kept raising the price.

Know this, Triple A games are on the decline in terms of quality and entertaining. Indie games and older games you didn’t get around to play are where the “fun” is at. I’d argue they’re better than what’s being releases now. You don’t need a top performing PC to play those kinds of games. Tons of indie games that developers are passionate about. Go look at how awful Overwatched or the latest Halo. The greed of hardware/software companies are killing the industry. I’m sadden to see the industry going down this path. I found new a hobby. I think the biggest mistake they made with the 4070Ti (other then the obviously ludicrous pricing) is the fact they cut the memory bandwidth down so much that while it has the memory of a high end card, it has the bandwidth of a budget SKU. Even my 1070 (I bought new in 2016 and STILL am using) has a 256 memory bandwidth. At 1440p I don't think I have ever used more then 60% of my VRAM either, in any title. At this point I am saving up to buy a used 3070-3080 soon as I have two kids and things to pay for and cannot justify spending near $1k or more (the ENTIRE budget of my last PC) on just one part, the GPU. I don't even care if I buy a card that was used for mining, I would rather pay $400 for an old mining card off eBay then spend this much on an overpriced card and contribute to this LUDICROUS pricing

Remember the EVGA debacle? The margins were already low at the MSRP set by Nvidia which is why cards will always cost way more than expected from AIBs. That would include packaging and shipping to retailers. AIBs or retailers lowering the cost without Nvidia initiating it means everyone but Nvidia loses money just so they can clear shelves since AIBs purchased the GPU silicon at Nvidia's pricing and retailers at the AIBs price. They would need to be refunded some of that cost before prices can drop well enough, especially for the older cards. That's why a 3900X CPU still costs more than a 5900X.

It reached $1,200 at retailers. Now it's hard for them to make money because Nvidia and AMD have decided to get the most chunk of that overprice. It's okay by me. It's easy to have an idea... Look at the intel arc 3xx, with 6gb of gddr6X.. yes, X... sold at, I think, 159 bucks. Now, let's assume intel is willing to make at least 50-60 bucks, on each unit sold. We're left with $100. Now, assuming the factory, the guy who imports/ transport, the guy who stores it in a big warehouse, and ultimately, the online retailer, they all make 30-40 bucks, that means the card + packaging + everything else, must cost intel around 50 - 60 bucks, to manufacture... Now, if we calculate the price of the gpu + pcb assembly +quality assurance + testing + packaging, let's say, 20, 30 bucks max, that means... Those 6 GB of Gddr6X probably only cost 20 to 30 bucks ! Come on, let's be optimistic, and say the 6GB cost 40 bucks ! That means, the price of these memories aren't exactly what the industry, amd... Nvidia... Sony, etc, wants us to believe ! Then, when Yuku are a big company like Nvidia, you don't order it by the hundreds of by the thousands of units. No. They will order 10k... or even 100k... and that means an extra % price cut. No, gigabytes of gddr6 or gddr6x don't cost hundreds, if not thousands $, like many want us to believe ! A rtx3090, with 24GB of gddr6x ? Well, Nvidia are probably paying less than 200 bucks, for those 24GB of memory ! Let's say the 3090 pcb and components, + the main gpu, + cooling system + testing and packaging will cost Nvidia 150 to 200 bucks... with 200 bucks for the memory, a 3090 used to cost under $400. Sold at $1999, that's a pretty nice margin. Seeing that, we can assume that it would only cost 20..or 30 bucks, for the ps5 to have gddr6x, instead of gddr6 ! With gddr6x memory, the ps5 would probably be a +12Tflops system, instead of 10.3TF !.... so GREEDY ! Lol, and when we think Nvidia wanted to charge an extra $200... to go from the 12GB to the 16GB model...

@@krectus Kinda right, but also kinda wrong. Percentage wise it's about right. The problem is the top cards are so expensive that they're throwing the whole price range out of whack. The 1070 for example beat the 980ti for half the price. The 4070ti beats the 3090ti for half the price, but the 980ti was only $700, while the 3090ti is $1500

Technology just simply can't progress more without a major breakthrough. Phones are already all the same for last 5 + years. Soon it will be with graphics cards. It's so little and marginal what you can do with this. People overestimate human progression in technology just because we got this huge jump in last 50 years. But there is only so much you can squeeze out of one creation. This companies rely on making new innovations to survive, but there is just nothing they can do except just add more stuff to it. Like what's the point of 4k or now even 8k? it doesn't do anything. No one can tell the difference. It only eats up more processing power, completely useless. But it gives an excuse for people to buy and for graphics cards to become bulkier with simply more things shoved into it. I mean what do you people expect? Obviously, progression will be really slow soon and less and less people will be upgrading constantly so they prices have to be higher because less people are actually purchasing. In this case simple supply and demand doesn't actually work. There is a limit to how low they can be, and that limit is above what would small enough price point where people that would have not upgraded would upgrade it because it was "just that cheap" So the price has to reflect what people that already are upgrading cards constantly would pay. Most of such people don't really care if its $100 more expensive or not. But that's how company can equalize less people constantly upgrading. It's not only about making money it's about making as much money or more than you made last year. Because, when you made more money, you already have spent it on new jobs / research and possibly new facilities. You got new investors that want to get a return on their investment, which would be impossible if the company makes less money. So that is why the price is the way that it is.

Nvidia's 3000 series is EOL already, because they refuse to let the new DLSS run on them. If you don't intend to use DLSS, a 3060 12GB (not the new 8GB crappy version) is decent, basically a 2060Super-2070 level of performance with more VRAM; maybe stretch it to 3060Ti, it all depends on the price you can find them for. I believe the initial purpose of the 40 series cards was Crypto Mining. I don't think they had gamers in mind in the slightest. Gaming was an afterthought and a bonus. The process and way they were made make it clear, especially with the higher-end cards. Then, the market crashed. So they just kept the prices high and consistently relaunched cards slightly better than the last. Because people will buy them just to be considered on the higher end. I know so many people running a 4090 on a 60Hz monitor its not even funny.

The second half of that seems demonstrably false. Right to repair has only made progress in the last 2-3 years. Traditionally corporations have been able to lock down their products to limit end user serviceability. But in the last decade strides have been made much to the chagrin of corporations like apple to improve end user serviceability. Hence why apple put out their little "rentable repair tools" allowing end users to get the tools apple themselves use to repair their products. In the past apple would have told anyone asking to go sit on a cactus.
