The Maxx Fans work great, especially the front one which is mainly used to extract hot air and fumes when cooking. We could survive without the back one, but it does come in handy on really hot days! *I bought the PUTTY TAPE from a guy on eBay, who was selling his last stock. It seems to be a hard thing to find. I was mainly looking at a roof fan for condensation in winter. How'd you find that went? TBH I think, given I've got a Hiace Commuter with lots of windows... just having the passenger front window ajar, and the rear driverside window ajar and having an inside fan blowing towards the back when I'm sleeping etc. Hoping that's going to stop condensation, as I didn't really want to spend the extra $400 on a roof fan, plus adding height and if I screwed up the install :P

Random question but I am trying to set up my van. What do people connect their 12V DC RV roof fan/vent to if they have a solar system in their van??? From what I have seen inverters only have AC outlets?? am I missing something??? Thanks

Have been using Jaz’s awesome videos for every step of the way of our van build. I also struggled to find the thick putty tape which was used but managed to get the result by using a few layers of this from Bunnings: www.bunnings.com.au/one-on-one-48mm-x-5m-heavy-duty-double-sided-sealing-tape_p1091267 Just make sure to cover it all with sikaflex to be triple sure. Tip: (from my experience) I installed a Maxx air fan on my 2013 transit connect, and i also installed a bug screen in my doorway. Now this video has two fans, but i only have one. Typically you want to suck out the hot air in the summer, but i was today sitting in my van and noticing bugs were collecting on my bug screen when my door is open cause i like to not feel enclosed. I started thinking about it 🤔. So with my fan sucking air out and my door with the bug screen being the intake, it was causing a negative pressure effect on my van. I then experimented with reversing the fan so it blows in, positively pressurizing the van and using my door with the bug screen as my exhaust, and instantly, the bugs flew away. I'm pretty sure the bugs were flying by and got sucked to the screen, which was probably unpleasant cause it's sprayed with a homemade peppermint, tea tree oil, lavender, rosemary, and eucalyptus spray i made to spray my doorways. Anyway, I've had a few bugs come back, but not nearly as many. My 2¢ won't hurt to try for yourself, and if it doesn't, well that took 2 minutes.

Jaz, You have done a very nice job on this van. I just bought a 2015 and will be camperizing it. I would suggest to anybody else who is installing fans to use a hole saw for the corners as round corners will try to stop any tearing of the metal skin of the van. Really nice job mate.

Over your stove it might be good to fit a range hood. This will reduce steam and oil spread in the van. You only need a small 150mm additional vent hole above it. I got one this year from CaravansPlus in ACT - it has a built in downlight and clock as well.

I think you have the right idea - two vents to move the air through. On a budget I feel you could have replaced the rear MaxxFan with a just a simpler vent or a skylight that opens. Two fans running doesn't seem to be required to move the air through..
@glennr99134 жыл бұрын
My 2016 Sprinter has large vents on the top of the dash, so I don't think you really need to even add one on the roof. There's a large filter under the hood, on the passenger side, that goes to the vents. I think there's an exit vent somewhere hidden in the right rear corner too. I'm just mounting a Maxxfan in the rear of my van, to pull air from the front.

At 5:12, it's better to take the shroud off after drilling the pilot holes and drill larger holes in the shroud to allow the screws to slip freely. Then the screws pull the shroud down better.

Great series Mate- I like that you clean up after each step - it pays off later. One question: Why are the 2 fans offset as in not in-line or on center? Better air flow or is that based on where things will be positioned?
@JaznLori7 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot mate it definitely does pay to clean up often haha. The front fan is going to be closer and above where I will be cooking, that's why it's offset, also the shower construction wouldn't allow center position. The back fan is center above where the bed will be, and also needs to be center as there are overhead cupboards on each side

I love love love how you show every step and make it simple, but could you please show how you connected the fan to power? Or if the fans run on batteries can you lease show me how I will change those batteries? (I’m brand new at this l) Thank you very much.😊

In the video the fans were connected to a temporary 12V supply. But later this was changed to the house battery in the back of the van which was installed later, which is a dedicated 12V supply, I would go and watch Ep.9 and Ep.13 which go in depth on the battery system, and also check the related blog posts on my website which break it all down. Question: if you are wanting to go completely stealth, can you build it so the lid height only reaches flush with the van if fully open (recessed in when closed)? Also, can you hear the fans when you are standing outside but beside the van? I realize you might need a way to drain it if water collected (sealed hose from one corner?) but it wouldn’t be stealth otherwise... do you a work around seeing a fan open on the roof.

@JaznLori6 жыл бұрын
They aren't screwed into the internal wood panels. They are simply just screwed into the van roof metal, and sikaflexed down. they'll never move especially since they are sikaflexed. What I meant by "finishing the last bit and screwing into the ceiling panels" is the cover shroud which you can see I believe in episode 10. this shroud just has 4 screws that screw to the celing timber and neatens it all up

Hi Chris, I put 2 in so I could get better airflow through the van when the van is closed up, (one sucking in air and one extracting it). Jaz Morton would you not recommend using the car battery as a permanent source of power for the light?
@jacobwyskochil61094 жыл бұрын
What power source did you connect your fans to and how? We just tried to connect the pos/neg wires to a 125v non-polarized plug. When we plugged it into our 120v Goal Zero Yeti, it rejected the connection. Next, we plugged the fan plug into an extension cord to the house, and shorted out the fan causing sparks and smoke to come out the fan computer. Any reason why these happened?
@JaznLori4 жыл бұрын
Ahh mate it's a 12V DC Fan, not a 125V AC fan. The fan also is polarised, so pos and neg will need to be correct polarity. Mine is connected to my van house battery (the battery that runs all the loads in the back of van), not the starter battery. From memory, I think the Maxx fans might come with a fuse built in, hopefully you've blown a fuse and haven't fried the fan..

T%hat is a fresh air fan not a stove top exhaust fan. The fan is going to get grimy defending on how much you cook. You would have been better off installing a fan with a kitchen filter...

This look likes a nice, well-done series, but..... I don't understand why most of the videos on YT have music. Esp really crappo music. And bits of different music patched in. Do you think people can't watch a video without it? At least, some of them arrange things so the victims can hit the mute, but the way these are done, you can't.

Since you don't have the technical skill to control the volume of the music, you should just toss the music. It's annoying.
