A lot of times I will practice with rods so that I don't focus on the sound, but on the rhythm. When I let my mind empty, I end up doing creative stuff like this with triplet patterns, alternating different rudiments. One example is playing the rhythm to "Take 5" (forget about the solo). The 2/4 and 3/4 (5/4) are perfect for this.

Nice in depth video; another example that shows just from a couple of different patterns you can come up with many different ideas. Another one I will take away and practice

@@jazzpianoman01 thanks for the interest! I recommend The Jazz Drum Solos and Fills Pack: jazzdrumschool.com/course/drumming-solos-drumming-fills It has helped lots of drummers expand their vocabulary and creativity for both fills and solos. Since these 2 skills are related, I put them together in a course pack. Many thanks again my friend 🤙

Fabulous Von! I have been struggling with where to start fills. The 'a' of 1 seems to flow very nicely. Thanks so much.

Great Fred! I'm glad it was helpful. You can also try staring on the "a" of 2, 3 and 4. So many ways to slice it and the more flexible you can become with where you start your fills, the more you can really respond to the music. I hope to see you in the Jazz Drum Fills Course to go deeper: jazzdrumschool.com/course/drum-fills Keep swinging my friend 🤙

That 7 note pattern... The paradiddle diddle plus a bass drum... RLRRLLK RLRRLLK is a challenging one because it doesn't fit the triplet or 16th note grid like the others. It's faster than triplets but slower than 16ths because it's only 14 notes occupying the same amount of space

Thanks for sharing and for watching! I've written all of what I'm playing out on the PDF's that go with the course. I believe you are on the Groove Pass so you can also download those and see how I explain things in much more detail. I totally understand what you are saying. It's really less important to count the strokes and more important to feel the overall shape of the pattern over 4/4. Then it won't seem so complicated. Odd groupings open up another avenue of creativity for us as drummers and actually can be very musical rather than sounding like a math problem. I have always been a fan of music first and music Math second. If I'm going to use an odd grouping, it has to both fit the music around me and feel natural. If it feels like I'm forcing a different feel onto an existing one, it never works well from my experience. Feel free to contact me directly at the School through the message system too. I'm always happy to hel you my friend 🤙
