In this jazz drum lesson, you will learn how to play jazz drum solos from jazz drumming legend, Colin Bailey. Colin demonstrates 4 two bar drum solos from his book, "Drum Solos, The Art of Phrasing". All instrumentalists use phrases to put together a solo. In this lesson, Colin teaches you how to solo in two and four bar drum phrases. He also shares some great sounding variations for each of the drum solo examples. colinbailey.com

As a drummer and drumming instructor, I think that Colin Bailey is a wonderful, clean, crisp player. He plays so musically; that's why many people wanted him on their recordings and live performances over many decades. He knows when and when NOT to unleash his great chops. There is nothing wrong with show drumming. I do that from time to time when it's called for; but it is more important for a drummer to keep steady time, kick the band, play sensitively, and very collaboratively. Play with simpatico, and make music that is pleasing. Drumming "gymnastics" can get boring. Anyway, Mr. Bailey is a supreme artist on the drums.

Colin played w Vince Guaraldi in the 60s at San Francisco's Jazz Workshop. The trio worked there a lot. A legendary jazz club on Broadway during the Beat era before the street began to look more like the Tenderloin.

Colin I met you in 1990. I had gone to Danville to check out Gaylord Birch and you were subbing for him that night. I remember thinking "this guy is great, and he looks really familier." Then it hit me: "this is the dude who wrote that bass drum book.' You spent your entire break talking with me and telling me tonight show stories! Also, great video lesson!

Yes it is Radia. I played on Terry Bozzio's at DW and I liked it so much I got Sabian to make me one. They take a week to make. I love it, it's got exactly the feel and sound I like, Dark!

By the way, that was a pretty smooth performance. Really helpful, if I'm being honest, because I do tend to have troubles on transitions whenever I'm bringing my right hand from the ride onto the snare. So thanks Colin!

Colin, I met you at Frank's Drum Shop in Chicago in the mid 60's. I just finished my lesson with Roy Knapp. He introduced me to you just after you finished a clinic on your just released "ahead of its time" bass drum book technique. You autographed my copy...which I still have. You're sound excellent as ever.

there is an 'ease and elegance' in his playing. a relaxed, studied, intentful and eloquently 'understated' element going on here. very nice work sir. one things for sure, this ain't about forcing all those 'blistering', blinding, 'trying to impress' chops on everyone. it's about 'breathing and...body position... hand and forearm ergonomics, a relaxed, subtle grip.... just really nice demo here!
