I grew up with a metal band like so many others, but our drummer took it really seriously and introduced us all to jazz and gospel drumming to open our eyes to other influences. Sometimes jazz and gospel drummers just destroy but in a totally different way that can be hard to process initially

Heck yeah. The somewhat hidden intricacies are the most important. it's so odd to jam with a drummer that understands that the little notes, and them jam with one that doesn't, you never really notice how sick it is until the barely audible stuff is gone.

Brother, you are truly open to receive. Even when I was teaching, most of my students were gospel drummers and the moment I tried to introduced them to death metal they had all type of excuses of why they didn’t wanna go there.. i’m really glad that you keep exploring all of the possibilities after all, we are drummers.

i think most people dont want to explore other genres which is a shame. like in your example its not like the gospel musicians will suddenly turn into death metal, but they will go out their comfort zone to learn new skills and a deeper understanding of what works in music and what doesnt. there is so much tribalism between genres its insane.

@@iamscythed that doesn't have any fast double kick in, or jazzy drumming in it tbh. Mostly just groove based. The opening of deliverance has fast double kicks then the verses are kinda jazzy and delicate. The whole middle section is groovy so all bases are covered really.

just a quick tip for everyone practicing double-pedal consistency: practice those grooves from weaker (left) foot, and if you want drum sheet just use snare rudiments for two hands and play them with feet on kick drum instead, simple as that :) PS: even if you're not playing metal and not interested in double-bass at all, such excercises will help a lot with stamina and brain to play hi hat on foot along one kick drum

When I was learning to play double bass - I used to do this thing I called 'The left foot/right foot drum off' - Start with a basic 4/4 groove - and each full measure, you swap between playing with the right foot and the left foot on the kick. Then, start adding embellishments - might be some triplets, some 8th note grooves, then working up to some heel-toe stuff etc. The goal was to be able to play with my right foot to a point where I couldn't play with it with my left, then hold it there until I could.

It was funny seeing you bust out those double pedals because they looked so familiar. They're the same ones I just got for my first drum kit. 😅 And the left foot thing might be the left pedal because I tried fixing the tension. I put WD-40 on all the pivot joints and it sure helped. And yes they are under $100.
