I saw a film where they kept singing “John Chisholm” and I’ve never gotten it out of my head for decades. Can’t even recall the name of it. I imagine it’s a different dude though.

That's been a running joke in New Orleans for decades. There's music in Utah, but they're certainly not known for jazz.

23:13 nice syncopation by Jim! In a way, it's also a typing of [rhythmic] "phasing". If he made that rhythm by passing the off beat from one hand to the other then that's quite impressive!

For anyone actually not into jazz but interested, he did mention Kind of Blue, which is amazing, but I'm surprised he didn't mention "A Love Supreme" by John Coltrane, I mean... for someone new to the genre, it's hard to beat as well.

There is such thing as a 12th note, a triplet quaver. Officially nobody calls them 12th notes but that's just an affectation.

@@Matthew-ve7uv Yeah weirdly my music teachers would strike me down for calling them 12th or 24th notes, but that's literally what they are and they knew what I meant - so WHAT is the problem. It always got my goat. We were already talking numerically and 24th note is easier than saying "triplet semi-quaver"

Jim's right,as far as European influences- the French had more liberal views, and a greater tolerance for artistic expression. Check out the history of Congo Square in the early 1800s. "Mr expert" skips about 100 years of early development.
