I started playing piano when I was 8. In high school I started listening to and learning about some basic jazz in band and studied classical. I have two music degrees, I studied jazz piano with different teachers, continuing to learn more but never in-depth, as you can arrive at here, a couple fairly well known in Boston area, the latter one leading me to massive injuries as I practiced drills and drills. I have all the jazz books imaginable, a couple large tomes collecting dust on shelves for DECADES. Then an adult student introduced me to you Kent and I started listening, and learning, and IMMEDIATELY bought your book and then a month later the appendix. Kent is THE BEST JAZZ TEACHER I’ve ever had and this book on how to learn and play jazz IS THE BEST I’VE EVER SEEN, it’s laid out so clearly, as you can see. You are a true Teacher, everything is extremely clear in the book and every page is formatted properly. What a wonderful resource!!! I'm a self taught classical pianist and almost grade 4 (a few pages from finishing grade 3 book). With this book are there videos one can access to see if oen's doing it right then? Because if there are, this has got to be the essential go and must be in the top 5 best resources to ever access on KZbin. When learning, it's good to know if ones doing it right so please could you let me know if there are videos that illustrate how one should be going forward in the book. if not, I'm going to purchase anyway and I guess will have to develop a good ear for how it should sound.

@@11kwright I think Kent has videos on most of the songs in these books. If you search the song title on his KZbin channel you will find performances and tutorials. If you click through the KZbin channel by playlists, lessons are grouped by composer, genre, and technique. His website has a bunch of PDFs he has made free which accompany many of his videos. Enjoy your find!

Yes .....between the book and the videos you should have most of the information I have learned over the years. The book was written 9 years before the videos started. Many lessons on the vids were taken from the book,.... but many are newer concepts, that are not in the book. So you should really study both...they are good compliments. The new appendix will be an addition...and good if you like exercises and drills...all levels.

It’s straight forward. And unlike so many other jazz books, it’s not boring!!

Just purchased this. A hefty price tag but my feelings are it's money well spent because I purchased the Hal Leonard book and makes sort of sense but there's not enough detail at the level it should be explained at for me to progress well. I used the discount because, yes I very much needed it otherwise I would not have purchased it and a huge thank you to Ken Hewitt which I gravitate to among a few others jazz tutors on KZbin that aren't trying to bleed us dry and yet never getting anywhere with their resources. hahaha!!! the Wynton Kelly arpeggio at 9:30 and that line following is fantastic... always so tasty and simple and clean. That's what I need is just more practice to get tasty be bop lines... I'm ok but I think the Charlie Parker Omnibook and play that on piano... lines a piano player wouldn't think of. I dunno nothin but I love your channel.
