Please note there is a mistake at 4:40 - it should say 'Traditional Jazz' NOT 'Traditional Rock'. Apologies for the typo.
This Jazz Piano Tutorial is about Jazz-Rock Fusion.
Fusion, which began in the late 1960’s, adopted elements from both Rock and Funk. It took the sparse, ambient feel of Modal Jazz, the Funk groove, and the Rock solo, and combined them all together over a straight 8ths rhythm.
In a sense, you could say that:
Modal Jazz Ambience + Funk Groove + Rock Solo + Straight Rhythm = Fusion

Really good. Finally understood all about the history and the influences for fusion. Please make videos about other genres of jazz and music overall as well.

I find it funny that Santana is jazz fusion fusion because Rock + Jazz = Jazz-Rock and Jazz + Afro-Cuban music is Latin Jazz both of which are Jazz Fusion. Latin Jazz + Jazz-Rock = Latin-Jazz-Rock, which you could call Jazz Fusion Fusion.

Terrific video. Now I'm curious, though: from your description, does this relate somehow to what we would now call "Jam bands", like the Grateful Dead and their many spin-offs, Phish, The Dave Matthews Band, etc?

Good stuff! You forgot Allan Holdsworth on the last list. Also it’s Return To Forever, small typo.

Where would you put (Dixie) Dregs in that list? I feel it's still Jazz Rock, but they do a lot of Genre-Hopping. Also Barbara Thompson & Steps Ahead should probably be mentioned.

So what scale to use inorder to create jazz rock fusion sound?
@TheSteelDialga
@TheSteelDialga Жыл бұрын
A lot of rock, funk, and fusion music uses the dorian scale (natural minor with a raised 6). The sound of jazz rock/fusion is not solely created because of the scales they're playing though. It's like he says in the video, fusion focuses on the groove more and less so on the harmonic ideas or chord progressions. Sometimes it's just one chord or one pedaled root note. You could have a fusion song that sounds like the genre regardless of what scale you might use even.
