Hi Kent , you hit the nail on the head again: “the rhythm is the most important and also the most difficult to understand.”. How true. I’m living im Brazil for over 15 years nao and I still don’t get it. And there are so many variations and mixed styles with african and jazz influences etcetc. Just beautiful and perhaps you have to be borne there to have it in your veins and let it come natural. Anyway, excellent tutorial. Very easy to learn....just one note😠

I've been to Ipanema Beach. I went to a cafe/bar close by the beach one evening. I was sitting outside when a group of about 8 "seniors" arrived. They took out guitars and percussion instruments and started an impromptu samba gig. Very cool on a warm summers evening. Jobim style music is still very much alive and well in Brazil. (There's lots of exotic birds in Brazil so that could be true - you can even buy CDs of birdsong to listen to at home if you live in the city).

Thanks for the great deconstruction of this timeless classic standard. Really enjoy the colors revealed in each landscape journey taken. Will have to work on the consequential syncopation opportunities. Love the extra Pride taken in the signature chapeau, kerchief, tie and shades ensemble. Always looking classy for your audience. Gratefully.

Hi Kent, my apologies for not being here for quite a while. All is well and even better now I’m back listening to you. Love the tie by the way. This is a song I sing quite frequently and I have that album. So many good songs on it. Good to see you. And I always love watching you play and listening to your analysis. I was lucky enough to go to Rio. I had tears in my eyes when I heard” Ipanema “ being played as I stepped off the ship. A dream come true to be there. You mentioned Jobim being influenced by the birds and that explains to me why singers emulate their sounds., including me ! Thank you once again. 😊👩🏻‍🦰😎💛

Hi Kent! I'm trying to sound upbeat which is how I guess the song is meant to sound! I'm so glad you mentioned that Jon Hendricks wrote the words to this as I discovered Lambert Hendricks Ross a few years ago and think they are so underrated, especially in the UK where of course Annie Ross hailed from. I have their triple CD of three albums; 'Lambert Hendricks & Ross Sing Ellington'/'Hottest New Group In Jazz'/'High Flying With L,H & R' and they also added vocals to tunes of my other great favourite, Horace Silver. (I'll have to play some of their stuff today as I find their tunes and melodies so inspiring). I don't, sadly, have anything by Jobim they might have recorded although I have some of the recordings of Gilberto, Jobim, Astrud and Getz etc and of course they feature in my Real Books which I have for Clarinet and Tenor Sax (B flat), Alto Sax (E flat) and a smaller version for Piano in C. Now I'm concentrating almost entirely on piano (with occasional attempts at the flute my wife bought me) I suppose I should have bought the larger edition but I have plenty of material, plus of course Kent's Books 1 & 2 that's enough for now. I also so enjoy these Tutorials on KZbin. Thank you so much Kent for being a real mentor for all of us, pro, pro-am, amateur or as someone I used to be in a concert band or two with described me as, an itinerant musician! He was Leeds College of Music trained on flute and sax who for some unfathomable reason became a builder in North London! I used to bash a guitar around for a bit when I was in the Army as well as harmonica but now I'm learning piano, everything I learnt in previous existences, musically-wise makes so much more sense.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this, David. Actually L,H and R were very popular in their day and were featured in all the major jazz festivals. I saw them at the Newport Jazz Festival in the 60's a few occasions and they always brought the "house down". I'm glad you are focusing on piano now, and I'm glad to help out. Keep up the good work and swing loose.

Hello Kent: Nov 1st. 2020 ~~~~~~~~~~~~ I am a nontrained composer and would like to know what makes the song. You Go To My Head, ...(1938). by Songwriter J. F. Coots, b 05-02-1897 d 04-08-1985 How does the song work? What's the trick the songwriter used. ? Also, how do I get the effect of a lush string on a piano? Great question to ponder. I'd be happy to give you my views. But the answer takes some thought and prep on my part. It may have tricks, but usually those are very subtle, and basic rules of melody and harmonic progression are more important. (although there are many exceptions). So please write to my email and I can start working on a proper answer to your question. Thanks. kenthewitt@hotmail.com
