Pretty much all of what I play has to be deposited in my memory first as I am visually impaired. I have to use a 7x magnifying glass to read sheet music. I haven't found a way to hold the magnifying glass and sheet music in such a way that would allow me to simultaneously play it, yet. Thanks for posting these videos. I have found them to be very helpful.

Sooooo many of my heroes played by ear and from memory. Forge your path playing to your strengths! Perhaps you won't be able to sight read in a concert band - but who cares (that's boring). You should compose and improvise - learn melodies you love by ear. Reading is fine, but many of my heroes did not read music!

Hi Dr. Wally, Great video, as always. Thanks. I’m wondering where I can get some of the sound diffuser panels you have on your walls? Will they absorb sound to sort of soundproof my practice room? Take care. Joe
@drwallysax
@drwallysax 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Joe, they diffuse more than absorb. Not a great choice for sound mitigation. They're special order from GIK acoustic - took several months to deliver.

Dr. Wally, I know I'm a little late to the party since this is 25 May and the video was 14 Feb (invasion day), but the link provided to "...the free scale patterns for these play along exercises..." did not result in the play along exercises you use in the video. They linked to D Major Scale Studies, D Major Articulation Patterns, "Half Whole" Diminished, and Whole Tone Scale Patterns. I'd like to print the Jazz Scale Patterns, put them on my music stand and trade fours with you whereas now I do it watching the monitor. That said, I'm following all your YT tutorials and I "enrolled" in the Saxophone Fundamentals course, and appreciate the time and effort you must have devoted to providing these very useful materials. I've been playing off and on (USN Submarine 21 year career obviated sax playing opportunities.) for 73 years as a weekend warrior with not formal college campus music education. FYI, I'm playing in three local big swing bands, two at 1st tenor and the third on lead alto.

Hi Wally, I realise why you are so dreamy in this video ... think of all those film and TV sequences based on the whole tone scale in rapid flurries across the harp! 🤣 Coincidentally introduced one of my students to the whole tone scale last week and realised that the teacher should be practicing a bit more too. :) Also your wall art looks almost exactly like the on-screen square that you have to scan with your phone in order to log into the bank identification system here in Sweden. I am listening but wondering at the same time whether I should log in and check my finances! 🤔 👩‍💻 😆 As ever, congrats on great content and appreciate your comments on printing and reading in real life and real time without the bells and whistles. /Christina aka Maestra Pearce Music

Hey Christina! I can assure you, I'm never accused of being "dreamy!" Dreary, yes, but not dreamy. The wall art is actually acoustic panels - it's a random patter for diffusion. Hope you're having a great week - how's the weather up there?
@christinapearce4045
@christinapearce4045 2 жыл бұрын
Dreary? - you? - never! Though perhaps you inadvertently provided an accurate description of the weather here, albeit only sometimes on the bitter grey days. To be honest it changes all the time in a prolonged winter to early spring seesaw. One day recently it was a burst of spring and birdsong, next day woke up to fresh snow. Trickiest is the rain that freezes and causes ice melting to refreeze. And repeat. Longing for the day I can ditch my boots with spikes fitted. Indoor shoes are the thing here at work, walking in your socks if at someone's house. A bit further north they have a whole other season representing the even longer uncertainty between winter going and spring arriving. This season is neatly called "vårvinter" (literally springwinter) as Swedish is nothing without a good compound word (and multiple words for snow...❄) Swedes live by "Det finns inget dåligt väder, bara dåliga kläder." (There is no bad weather, only bad clothes!) So it's wrap up and go. I am trying to think how that could relate to saxophone... there are no bad reeds, only... oh hang on... 😆🎷

I really need help with my low D on my Eb Alto Saxophone. It's always really flat, like 30-40 cents flat. When I try to make it sharper with my throat, it just goes up an octave. Also my high A sounds really airy or scratchy. When I play the A without the octave key and raise it up an octave with my throat, it sound really well. I just am having trouble with theses two notes.

here's an odd question. have you ever come across a student who just can't get a good tone? I've had an alto for a year and a half and I can get it to play in tune and all but the tone itself is just not pleasant. How long does it take for the average student to get a decent tone? I'm not talking about something amazing, just the basic "oh, that's definitely a saxophone". I'm fine in the lower register but anything with the octave key is just ugly. I even had the saxophone checked by a technician and it fixed some intonation issues but I can't, for the life of me, produce a nicer sound. No matter what I do with my air stream, embouchure, etc, there's always this weird voice-like core to the sound which doesn't sound like any other player I've ever heard and it makes me want to give up.
@drwallysax
@drwallysax 2 жыл бұрын
EVERYONE can produce a great sound on the saxophone. The issue could be a any number of things, but I've yet to find a student that couldn't get a great tone (with enough time and patience). Finding a great teacher is key, preferably an experienced teach locally!
