Really enjoying these videos. I joined a vocal jazz ensemble this past month and we’ll be working on transcribing solos in the 2nd half of the semester. Your content is giving me a better idea of how to approach the learning process. Thanks!
This video is so good and you're quite a talented jazz vocalist. Immediately subscribing. One one tiny critique: I would have spelled the end of phrase 2 as "dayow" not only because it more clearly communicates the proper pronunciation but it's also just a lot of fun.

Hi! Greetings from Chile! I have a question, how would you describe the best way of choosing how to put the syllables in to the notes?? I would love if you make a video explaining more deeply this aspect. And i would apreciate too, if you have some book about scat or with scat exercises that you recomend, thanks, you are really great and i love your videos 🖤

Hi! Thanx for the comment! And great question! The syllables for scatting are such an important aspect that is so underrated. So my personal preference is to let the melody be heard, the syllables should be helping the melody to stand out and not stand in front of the melody. That being said, I limit the usage of B’s and P’s that have a strong popping effect and try to create a smooth flow that represents the melody. (V’s and F’s are easier to control the aggressiveness of its sound. ) I also don’t use the G’s and K’s too often with the same reason. V F’s with the lips, D L’s with the tongue are the main syllables I use. A good way to practice this idea is 1. Sing through a straw(the famous semi occluded vocal exercise), 2. Sing with a cork(1cm) between your front teeth(or anything that’s clean and small as 1cm) 3. Sing everything with the V sound(also a semi occluded vocal exercise). These all basically limit the usage of the lips and force you to articulate with your tongue, resulting in a smoother connection in the melody since the air is never completely stopped by the lips. Now aside from the usage of the syllables, the most important thing is to understand the articulation of the phrase. Listen to bebop era artists and how their articulation is shaped. (Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins, Oscar Peterson, Clifford Brown, Stan Getz, Bill Evans, Red Garland.)Trumpet phrases seem to work the best with vocal scatting but don’t limit your listening. Singing a bebop head is also a great way to practice. I used to write out all the syllables. Book> I have read through a couple of books regarding scat singing but … I can’t say I have any to recommend. I won’t say they’re totally unhelpful but never really bumped in a useful one. But I recommend 2 singers that kick ass in vocal improvisation. Michael Mayo, Unbelievable technique and voice. Very modern artist and his syllable usage is smooth as a saxophone. Benny Benack 3. A kick ass trumpet player/singer. His scat singing is on the traditional side but is so melodic. Trumpet is outstanding. I hope this helps out your question. As for a video, I might do a short one in the future;)

So cool your videos. May I ask some questions? Did you study jazz in US? Can you recommend some books or materials for jazz vocal improvisation? I like your singing. 😊
@takiwasaki1232 жыл бұрын
If you're asking did I study in a school, Thats yes and it was in the US. But Ive got to say the vocal department wasn't much, I studied most of what I do on my own. (Vocal Improv is yet an area that the pedagogy hasn't fully developed.) On the other hand arranging (big band) classes were great! These were for instrumentalists. My best advice would be to transcribe and listen as much as possible. I learned a lot from Clifford Brown, Sonny Rollins, Chet Baker, Stan Getz and so on.

How do you practice intonation and clarity on group of fast notes and intervals (especially the wide ones)?
